Basic Information
Juried showcases are 15-minute presentations of a performance and are designed to give presenters a sense of the
work as their audience would experience it. Showcases represent artists with a variety of fee ranges, technical
needs and genres. The Performing Arts Exchange 2015 will host two evenings of performances with up to 16 juried
showcase positions available.
When: Juried Showcases are on Tuesday, September 29, and Wednesday, September 30, after the Marketplace
closes. Juried Showcase time slots are 15 minutes in length with a five-minute changeover between artists. A 30minute tech check will be scheduled on the day of the performance.
Technical Support: South Arts provides basic technical support and a reasonable backline for the performance. This
includes lighting and sound packages appropriate for a festival format. A 5-piece drum kit, a keyboard or grand piano
will be available upon request. All artists are expected to use the same lighting plot. As part of the application
process, artists are required to submit the technical requirements for their 15-minute showcase. This will be reviewed
by the adjudication panel, showcase producer, and conference staff. Artists may be asked to adjust their technical
needs prior to being offered a showcase contract. Only technical engineers provided by South Arts may operate
equipment during the Juried Showcase.
Eligibility: Artists must be represented in the Marketplace for PAE 2015. Artists who were awarded Juried
Showcases for PAE 2013 and PAE 2014 are not eligible to receive a Juried Showcase in 2015 but are welcome to
produce an Independent Showcase.

Criteria:
Artists are judged on two criteria: Artistic Merit and Demonstrated Readiness for Touring. These criteria are
based upon the indicators listed below. Artists are rated on a 100 point scale with a maximum of 80 points awarded
for Artistic Merit and 20 points for Demonstrated Readiness to Tour.
Artistic Merit:
Technique: Artist’s movement, musicianship, verbal and non-verbal communication displays knowledge and
technical excellence in the chosen art form.
Interpretation: Artist demonstrates a level of artistry and expressiveness, and communicates the material to
the audience.
Stage Energy/Presence: Artists command attention and engage the audience.
Originality, if applicable: Artists stretch the boundaries of the art form in new and innovative ways. If an artist
is presenting work that was originally created by another, this indicator will not be factored into the scoring.
Demonstrated Readiness for Touring:
Web Presence: Current and complete information on the artist is accessible via the Internet.
Promotional materials: Materials should be of professional quality and include one press photo, an artist bio
or EPK, and an up-to-date touring itinerary.
Tech Information: Clear, flexible technical rider including lighting requirements and stage plots for various
size venues.
Video Quality: The artist should submit one YouTube link of a high quality video. Videos should include a
live clip of the artist in front of an audience and should convey to the panel what will be showcased at PAE.
Adaptability: The artists’ ability to perform in various venues such as concert hall/theatre, community center,
college/university, club/coffee house, outdoor festival, school/classroom.
Educational Materials: In some cases, artists have an education our outreach component to their
programming. If the artist incorporates these programs into their.
Adjudication
The adjudication process has two steps. Please note that there will be a pre-screening process to eliminate
applications that don’t meet set standards and guidelines. Assuming the application does meet standard guidelines,
the artist's application and supplemental materials will be reviewed by a Juried Showcase three-member panel
comprised of artist managers/agents, presenters and/or other professionals with at least three years’ experience in
presenting, touring or serving the genre of performance they are adjudicating. The composition of each panel is
balanced between presenters and exhibitors. Typically, if an artist scores 80 or higher out of a possible 100 points,
they will then move to the next round in which the Juried Showcase nine-person panel will determine who is offered a
Juried Showcase opportunity. If the panel’s scores are weighted particularly low or high, Conference Management
reserves the right to change the cutoff score necessary to proceed to the second round.
Applicants may choose to apply to the Juried Showcase in the following categories: Music, Dance, Theatre, Variety,
Family/Young Audience. After that, they may choose one subgenre to further describe themselves.
You will be asked to select the category most appropriate to your performance on the application. If you would like to
be reviewed in more than one category, you must submit a separate application and fee for each category.
Regardless of the number of applications, an artist can only be awarded one juried showcase opportunity. No more
than two juried showcase opportunities will be awarded per agent/management agency.
Please note that only the first video link will be viewed during the panel. Panelists will have the option to watch any
other video submitted, but it will not be a requirement.

Provide a brief Program Synopsis of no more than 750 characters
Provide a brief Artistic Statement of no more than 750 characters
Provide a brief description of what you’re going to showcase, and if it is different from your work sample,
explain how and why
Describe any educational programs that are offered
How to Apply:
Application will be available on the Juried Showcases page in February. Please be prepared with all the information
listed above.
Complete the online application and submit your supplemental materials by the March 17, 2015 deadline. The
contract fee, if you are offered a showcase opportunity, is $650, and covers the basic tech costs of your
showcase. Your application fee is separate and is not a deposit on your contract fee. The contract fee must be
returned with your signed showcase contract by Friday, July 31, 2015. If you encounter difficulties completing the

The work sample should be submitted as a YouTube link
The work sample should be of the actual showcase to be performed.
The work sample should contain a live performance. Promotional videos are
strongly discouraged.

The work sample may be a five-minute segment or several shorter clips edited
together. Any video sample over 15 minutes in length will be not be
considered by the panel.

Make sure to indicate where to begin the viewing sample.


Submissions to the Music category may also include an audio recording, submitted online
in MP3, M4A or AAC format.
All materials must be submitted by March 17, 2015.
Tips for Applying for a Juried Showcase

If you wish to apply in multiple categories, you must complete a separate application for each category in

which you wish to be considered. However, an artist will only be awarded one 15-minute showcase.
Panelists have 2-3 minutes to review your video, so put your best foot forward by suggesting a specific

section of your video sample for review.
Answer application questions completely but briefly. For a preview of application questions see above.

Your work sample should be professional quality, in good working order, and of recent work—preferably of
the actual showcase to be performed. Promotional videos/montages do not provide the panel with enough
information and will result in a lower judging score.

Do not send work samples that include guest artists or other performers who are not members of the group
that will be performing in the showcase and touring the work.

Panelists want to see that your materials will be informative and useful to presenters who may be interested
in booking you; high-quality materials and video reflect strongly on your professionalism and thoroughness.
Your application will be disqualified if incomplete by 11:59pm ET on March 17.


A standard technical rider should include stage floor type, performance area, stage plot, lighting
requirements, audio visual needs, backline (what you need and what you are prepared to bring), sound
system and rags (special drapery or set pieces).

IWTS can auto-fill large portions of a current application from prior applications. Make sure all information is
indicative of the specific showcase for which you are applying.

Proof-read your application! An application without spelling or grammatical errors is indicative of your
professionalism.
Additional Requirements
Artists selected for Juried Showcases are required to register for a booth or be represented by a company with a
booth in the PAE Marketplace. The artist or their representative must register for a booth by Friday, July 31, 2015.
Note that professional photography is not allowed at the Juried Showcase without press credentials. However, artists
are permitted to bring a photographer to the technical rehearsal.
Additional Benefits
In addition to being given the opportunity to perform, Juried Showcase artists will be highlighted in the conference
program and on conference signage at the showcase venue. You will be given one complimentary Artist Pass to
admit one of your performers to the Marketplace for a single day. Passes for additional artists and/or additional days
may be purchased on-site at the Registration Desk for $75. This pass will also admit the artist into artist-specific
professional development sessions, but does admit the artist to any other conference activity or event.
