Digital Signs - PCA Baseball
Digital Sign Cards Defensive Signs • Infielders take a white wrist band from the bucket and return it when they are removed from playing the field. • Defensive signs are called out loud from the dugout by the defensive coach. o The sign is directed to either the 1st or 3rd baseman who relays the call to the other infielders. The player selected to relay is based on the location of the dugout. If the dugout is located along the 3rd base line, the 3rd baseman is the relay. If the dugout is located along the 1st base line, the 1st baseman is the relay. o Each infielder uses his wrist band to decode the play. • Valid signs are given as Color - Number. Decoys are given as Number-Color or using a number greater than 15 • All signs need to be processed within 2 seconds • Once a sign is given, it remains in effect until: o Another sign is given (e.g. another/different bunt coverage), or o A decoy sign is given, or o The defensive situation changes (e.g. the runner steals 2nd so there is no longer a 1st/3rd situation) * A given sign will not be repeated on every pitch • Pickoff plays only apply for one attempt/pitch. After that, the play is off. • If nothing is called from the bench: o The default bunt defense is: Crash (WC): No one on or a runner on 3rd Wheel 1(W1): Runner on 2nd (Steal coverage is always SS) Wheel 3 (W3): Everything else (Steal coverage is always 2nd) o The default 1st / 3rd defense is: SS cut (13C) • In acknowledgment of the default defense for a situation, the bench will simply call out to the 1st / 3rd baseman (who relays the same to all infielders): o “1st / 3rd” o “Watch for bunt” • Catchers wear two cards in a single wrist band: 1) Pitches and 2) Defense. Catchers must relay certain defensive signs to the pitcher: o Pickoff: Pound + 1, 2 or 3 o Bunt Coverage: Thumb toward 3rd (W3) or Pinky toward first (W1), or five fingers (WC) o Day Light: Pound + 5 (then later a glove pound to the ground to call for the throw to 2nd) * Note that Pickoffs can be called independently by the Catcher or be Pitcher-initiated w/o sign. • Two signs may be called out given a situation (example runners at 1st / 3rd) 1. Bunt defense (Default: WC) 2. 1st / 3rd defense (Default: 13C) Offensive Signs • The batter and on-deck hitters take a black wrist band from the bucket. o Wrist bands remain on while running the bases o Return the wristband to the bucket when returning to the dugout. Key to remembering this - when you remove your helmet, remove the wrist band o Infielders already wearing a defensive wrist band can either wear both wrist bands at the plate or remove the defensive wrist band. If the defensive wrist band is removed, place it in your mitt so that you will remember to put it back on before taking the field. • Offensive signs are called out loud from the dugout by the head coach. The sign is directed to either the 1st or 3rd base coach who relays the call to the batter and other base coach. The coach selected to relay is based on the location of the dugout. o If the dugout is located along the 3rd base line, the 3rd base coach is the relay. o If the dugout is located along the 1st base line, the 1st base coach is the relay. • Valid signs are given as Color – Number. Decoys are given as Number-Color OR using a number greater than 15 • The batter steps out to look at his wrist band • All signs need to be processed within 2 seconds • Runners on base look at their wrist bands while standing on the base, before getting a lead • Once a sign is given, it remains in effect until: o Another sign is given, or o A decoy sign is given, or o The offensive situation changes (e.g. the runner steals 2nd so there is no longer a hitand-run in effect) * A given sign will not be repeated on every pitch • A Take applies for one pitch. After that, the Take is off. • The 1st and 3rd base coaches also wear wrist bands. o Runners should tip their helmet as soon as they understand the sign. Even for decoys. o Runners can roll one hand in a circular motion indicating they need the sign to be repeated. o The base coach will verbally repeat the sign as called from the bench for runners on 1st and 3rd. The 3rd base coach will also handle the runner at 2nd. o As a last resort, the base coach will verbally reveal the actual code to runners on 1st or 3rd (e.g. HR, WO, S, SQ, T, B or “X” (meaning a decoy was called)) Pitches • Pitches are called from the dugout using hand flashes. • The head coach will flash three consecutive signs using the fingers on one hand • A zero is indicated by a clenched fist • The first two signs make up the column on the card. The 3rd sign is the row. • All signs need to be processed within 2 seconds • The catcher can roll his throwing hand in a circular motion indicating that he needs the sign to be repeated. • Catchers wear two cards in a single wrist band: 1) Pitches and 2) Defense o The catcher needs to hear and understand any defensive play called by the bench. o Some defensive plays require that the catcher relay a sign to the pitcher: Pickoff: Pound + 1, 2 or 3 Bunt Coverage: Thumb toward 3rd (W3) or Pinky toward first (W1), or five fingers (WC) Day Light: Pound + 5 (then later a glove pound to the ground to call for the throw to 2nd) o In some cases there will also be a need to signal a pitch (e.g. Bunt Defense), while others (Pickoff) there is no need for a pitch sign o Some defensive signs do not need to be signaled to the pitcher (e.g. First/Third defense) • Catchers return their wrist band to the bucket when removed from the field Outfield Positioning • The default outfield positioning is: 5-5-5. Always shift (LH or RH) first. o Default positioning is assumed whenever there is no overt call from the bench. o Positioning between digits is roughly 3-5 steps (10-15 feet) • Outfield positioning will be called out loud by the defensive coach on the bench • The call is directed to either the Left or Right Fielder who relays the call to the other outfielders. The player selected to relay is based on the location of the dugout. o If the dugout is located along the 3rd base line, the Left Fielder is the relay. o If the dugout is located along the 1st base line, the Right Fielder is the relay.
