I Love You Judy Merril
A Play On Memory
Atomic war. Mutation. Alien love. Telepathic bugs. And that was way before they met.
The last thing Jim Smith remembers was taking a lovely hot shower in the upstairs bathroom of his home in the East end of Toronto. Now
he is onboard what he assumes is a flying saucer, standing on stage in a space suit in front of an audience full of a variety of alien beings.
This is the best day of Jim’s life! But what the hell do these aliens want him to say? Scanning his brain they discover what they are looking
for: They want to know about Judy Merril. Jim has to reach back and decipher a complicated relationship with a woman he describes as “the
father he wished he had”.
Judy wrote science fiction from the 1950s until she fled the U.S. for Toronto in 1968. She died in 1997 and is fading away. Jim won't let that
happen, even if it takes a crappy old intelligent space suit, a box of Judy's stuff, and this abduction by an alien Tom Waits.
The House Of James brings their debut production, I Love You Judy Merril, to the Toronto Fringe Festival. Writer and performer Jim Smith
weaves a story of memory, hero worship, the wretchedness of Kingston, Ontario, and the ultimate question: Is it ever too late to say I love
you? Jim Smith is a Toronto poet and lawyer known for his books Back Off, Assasin: New And Selected Poems (Mansfield Press, 2009),
and Happy Birthday, Nicanor Parra (Mansfield Press, 2012). Directed by Jim Annan, is a multiple Canadian Comedy Award Winner for his
work with The Second City Theatre in Toronto, his comedy troupe FALCON POWDER, and his performance in the feature film Unlucky
(Breakthrough Entertainment).
