Toronto Easter Regional April
- May
A small group of our members went to Toronto for this
Regional. Most notable result came from Diane & Jim
Ferguson playing in The Saturday Fast Pairs. They placed
7th in B and first in C. Well done.
The team of Susan Halasi, Nancy Murphy, Peter Britton
and Melanie Robinson came 3rd in bracket 3 in The
Wednesday Swiss.
The team of Pat & Dave Munro, Maureen Nichols and
Birte Ayer did very little damage but managed to get
enough points to garner Pat Munro her silver life master; a
big congratulations for reaching this level.

Membership is due $15. Games will continue
to be $6 for members and $8 for non members.
Please renew no later than June 1st or face the
larger entry fee.
Mentoring Game
On Tuesday May 12 at 7:00 PM we will be starting a new
mentoring game to help our newest players develop their
game. This game will be stratified as follows:
A. Master with Novice 100-200 pts.
B. Master with Novice 50-99 pts.
C. Master with Novice under 50 pts.
Please sign up to be a mentor or novice. We have a great
group of newer players eager to improve their game. The
game will be held the second Tuesday evening of every
month.

Bridge Development
Due to what Sharon describes as a minor surgery she will
not be there for our first mentoring game. In her place, the
very capable Dwight Goden will run this event. Dwight has
asked that we make sure that anyone that has up to 200
points can play with a master and, as shown above, points
will be given to all players placing in their stratification.

Gatlinburg TN Regional April 13th -19th.
The team of Rick Jackson, Sally Thompson, Maureen
Nichols and Birte Ayer brought home 21.69 points, most of
that output from getting to the final in bracket 8 where they
lost to a semi professional team.
Bonnie & Sterling Zeran brought home 10.82 points,
mostly playing in pairs - a very good result.

Zero Tolerance
President's Message
Perhaps the most important contribution each and every
club member can make is to do their personal best to
ensure our club is a welcoming and hospitable place to
play bridge. I feel we have seen substantial progress in
promoting the “zero tolerance” policy for inappropriate
behaviour at the bridge table. This will continue to be a
high priority for your Board of Directors in the coming
year.

We've missed you desperately! It's good to have you back.
Annual General Meeting
The annual general meeting of the Peterborough Bridge
Club is scheduled for 11:45 am Friday May 1st at the club.
The Board of Directors will report on the 2014/15 operating
year and plans for the year ahead. There will be an
opportunity for “questions and answers”. All PBC
members are encouraged to attend. The regular Friday
afternoon open game will follow the meeting.

The Helen Shields Rookie Master Game
Changes in Club Management
WOW
On April 22nd., the Helen Shields Rookie Master game
was held with 17 tables participating. What an amazing
response from both rookies and masters. This has become
one of the most successful events of the year. A big thank
you to everyone who played and a special thanks to Marja
Hutchinson for being the host for this event.
I hope you will all join us on Oct. 22nd for the next RookieMaster game.

As indicated in our last club newsletter, the Board of
Directors has decided to restructure the club manager role
to focus on bridge operations – communications with the
ACBL, working with game directors to ensure games are
run professionally, promoting a positive playing
atmosphere, maintaining bridge supplies, and record
keeping. Club members will be asked to become more
involved in facility management, provision of refreshments
and related matters.
The position of Club Manager – Bridge Operations will be
filled in the next few weeks.
On behalf of PBC I would like to thank Marja for agreeing
to host this event and Sharon for again working so
tirelessly to promote and organize this game making it such
a success year after year.
Birte Ayer
Peterborough Sectional Bridge Tournament
Again this year, Peterborough is hosting a sectional
tournament - scheduled for the weekend of May 2 and 3.
Last year's tourney was outstanding, with good attendance
and great “hospitality”. I encourage all PBC members to
attend this year's event. And please contact tournament
organizers Ron Haney or Birte Ayer if you are able to offer
volunteer assistance in the form of contributions to the
goodies tables or assistance in the kitchen. Let's make this
year's event even better than last year's!
New Members
Since we started collecting membership fees for this year, 9
new players have joined our club. We welcome:
Ruth Newell, S. Gardner, Joyce Hodson, Linda Davis,
Kim McGrath, Adrienne Newman, Sue Cowan, Faye
Skitch, and Burney Skitch.
Board of Directors - departures and additions
The Monthly Birthday Game
I'd like to thank Peter Hayward, Charmaine O'Brien, and
Melanie Robinson for their contributions to the Board of
Directors over the past two years. Their good ideas, hard
work and dedication have made a real difference. If you
find yourself at the bridge table with one of these folks in
the next little while, take a minute to thank them for their
past commitment.
This event, that takes place the last Saturday of each
month, has become a huge success. Most of this success is
owed to Fran Burd, who works extremely hard to get
people out. The latest party in April had a record turn out
of 14 1/2 tables. In addition to honouring our birthday
members, we celebrated David Minty's anniversary of
playing duplicate bridge for 50 years. As a tribute to both
the birthday celebrants and Dave, club member Marilyn
Shaw, a professional cake and pastry chef, made the cake,
which looked absolutely stunning and tasted even better.
Needless to say not a crumb was left.
For our members who do not have access to the internet,

Board, I think we will have another strong team going into
next fiscal year. More on this at the Annual General
Meeting.

Hazel Dunford

Hazel Dunford was born Hazel Bradley on July 8th, 1913
and passed away April 10th, 2015.
"After a novice start at ‘kitchen bridge’, I discovered duplicate in May 1965 when ‘heat’ left the back door open at the
Orange Hall on Brock Street. Maude (Andy) Scott and her
daughter, Anna Woods, welcomed all newcomers to the
weekly Thursday evening game. Partners were ‘arranged' for me to play with. First there was Walter Whitely,
then came Otto Bjarnason and my duplicate education was
underway. Fifty years later, I'm still ‘learning.’ In those
days, regulars included Betty Turner and Don Allen.
Teaching in Toronto connected me with Peter McConkey in
the early seventies and we partnered each other regularly
at the Thorncliffe Park Bridge Club in Leaside. Cottage
times during the summer months at Chemong Lake allowed
regular Peterborough summer play until my retirement
from teaching in '98.
Hazel was a treasure to our community for 102 years. A
long standing member of Activity Haven, the Peterborough
Bridge Club, the YWCA and received the Peterborough
Senior of the Year Award.
Hazel, a strong willed, opinionated, spunky gal, was ahead
of her time. She was a daughter, mother, grandmother, great
grandmother, and friend who loved nature, hiking, teaching,
volunteering...a lover of life.
Hazel will be dearly missed by her long-time bridge partner
Marion Morrison and all her friends at the bridge tables.

helping me down the duplicate path :

Gatlinburg

Rick and l have just returned from a lovely week in
Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with our lively friends Birte and
Maureen. Birte made all the arrangements and did all the
driving - two days down and two days back. It was a
perfect time of year to drive through the beautiful
mountains of the Virginias, with Red Bud and Wild Pear
trees in full bloom. We stayed at a comfortable condo a
twenty-minute walk from the convention centre. We
cooked our own meals (mostly Maureen) and laughed and
discussed hands over one or two Black Russians in the
evenings. The bridge? Well, it started out smashingly. On
Tuesday we lost in the knockout finals to a team of brilliant
young men. We got 17 gold points, enough to push me to
the Life Master category. But after that it was all down hill.
By Saturday we were hysterical. After a long day of losing
every match to increasingly weaker teams in a compact
Knockout game that we had entered by mistake, while we
were waiting an extra long time for our last assignment, and
after Birte and Mo has been helplessly laughing, Birte came
up to me and said (it still makes me laugh thinking about it)
“They can’t find any team bad enough to play with us”. If
anything, Sunday (“Losers’ Swiss”) was even worse, and
we went back to our Black Russians with our tails between
our legs. But what fun we had, and how grateful we are to
Birte for arranging it!

Congratulations to Pat Munro on becoming a Silver Life
Master at The Toronto Easter Regional.
A double congratulations to Sally Thompson, she became a
Life Master and a Bronze Life Master at The Gatlinburg
TN Regional.

players made the top ten in our unit 246 in their point
category.
