NT Reading: James 3:2-18
2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what
they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check. 3 When we put
bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the
whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large
and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder
wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the
body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire
by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the
parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of
one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed
and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the
tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse
human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same
mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not
be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12
My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs?
Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. 13 Who is wise and
understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds
done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter
envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the
truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly,
unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition,
there you find disorder and every evil practice.
17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peaceloving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and
sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

Sermon Text: Psalm 12
1 For the director of music. According to sheminith. A psalm of David.
Help, LORD, for no one is faithful anymore; those who are loyal have
vanished from the human race. 2 Everyone lies to their neighbor; they flatter
with their lips but harbor deception in their hearts. 3 May the LORD silence
all flattering lips and every boastful tongue- 4 those who say, "By our
tongues we will prevail; our own lips will defend us- who is lord over us?" 5
"Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise," says
the LORD. "I will protect them from those who malign them." 6 And the
words of the LORD are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold
refined seven times. 7 You, LORD, will keep the needy safe and will protect
us forever from the wicked, 8 who freely strut about when what is vile is
honored by the human race.

Each Sunday, Pilgrim Kids helps children ages 4-8 to learn the Bible using Kid's Quest
Catechism Club materials. Children are dismissed during the doxology.
Time to say 'yes' to membership in the local Church. Not that membership is always easy.
Not that there's no pain in working alongside other disciples of Jesus. It's a simple way to
openly declare our desire to follow Jesus as His disciples together. Orientation to this

discerning and responding where possible to troubles and needs of all sorts. Please contact

at Pilgrim. The amount needed for general fund is $55,000 per quarter. The average weekly
2nd quarter giving was $3,886, and the average weekly giving needed was $4,716. The
amount received for the second quarter was $50,520.
Pilgrim is hosting a wedding shower for Melissa Riches and Leo Marte on Sun, May 3 at the
fellowship luncheon following the service. Come enjoy a community meal and shower Leo

Finals Bags. Lauren Campbell is putting together gift bags for students as finals approach.
They still need tea bags, snacks, pens, pencils, highlighters, and index cards. Please leave in
the kitchen labeled "UMT" or give directly to Lauren. Deadline is today, April 19.
Session met March 15 and heard from I King’s 19, prayed and discussed how we might
devote ourselves as elders to ongoing prayer for Pilgrim’s mission to disciple-making
disciples. We vetted elder nominations and prayed over a growing list of potential elder
candidates for the future.
Baby Shower held at Pilgrim Church for Lauren Campbell on May 2 at 10 AM. All Pilgrim
women are invited to come and help Lauren prepare for her baby boy due in July! We are
encouraging guests to bring their favorite children's book in lieu of a card with their gift.

Praise God for good engagement in Easter Outreach 2015 by Pilgrim. Ask God to grow
relations among recipients. More than $75,000 was raised this year.

Thanks to Steve Lewis for overseeing our Good Friday service.
Stewardship Team is discussing more cuts to our budget given lower-than-expected giving.
Our next round would involve staffing, outreach (Missions) and other areas not already
cut. We would make such cuts in early April. We’re improving our ability to receive
securities and appreciated assets, and to educate the congregation and neighbors about
personal budgeting and giving. Team meets Mon, May 11.

Detroit this spring break. The trip taught us a lot about issues of poverty affecting Detroit
and how to be advocates for those who don’t have a voice. I’m very thankful to have
