Pony League World Series Sponsorship Presentation
The first PONY League World Series was played in Washington, PA, in 1952 at the former Washington High School Baseball Field, won by San Antonio, TX. The following year, Fairmont, WV won the title at the first series played at the Original (now Lew Hays) Pony Field, the home of the event for the following 10 years, including the only championships won by Washington County teams--Monongahela in 1954 and Washington the next year. We've seen our share of World Series players go on to play at the highest levels of baseball. Ed Spezio, Steve Kemp, Wes Parker, Alex Fernandez, Jorge Fabregas, Nick Adenhart, and Christian Yelich are among the World Series performers who have gone on to MLB. And Joe Corvo went from his Oak Park-River Forest Pony team to play in more than 700 games in the NHL. Starting in 1964, the World Series was hosted by San Diego & National City, CA, Ralston, NE and Springfield, IL in consecutive seasons, then returned home for a six-year run. Seven of the next nine years, the annual championship tournament was played somewhere other than Washington, including return visits to Springfield and National City, plus stops in Pasadena, TX, Davenport, IA and Kennewick, WA. Twenty years after the event went on the road for the first time, the World Series returned to Washington, PA to stay, with every August Classic since 1984 held in Washington Park.
