This week helps to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems. School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master's degree in guidance and counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program. What does a school counselor do? Counselors work in professional partnerships with teachers and support personnel to provide an educational system where students can realize their true potential. They support this task by helping to reduce barriers to learning and in provide the support necessary for all students to achieve at the highest level. Through classroom guidance lessons, individual and group counseling, collaboration and school wide programs, counselors help students to examine their abilities, interests and talents as they explore careers and life after high school; work in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today's world; focus on positive ways to enhance students' social/personal, educational and career development; and support teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. Since graduating from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with my degree in guidance and counseling, I have worked to support elementary school students and their families. Since 2011, it has been my pleasure to serve as the school counselor at Hightower Trail Elementary School. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your child’s school day. If I can be of assistance to you and your family, please never hesitate to contact me. Yours In Education, Joycelyn H. Harris, M.Ed.
