Perodua Manufacturing Sdn Bhd is the superior yet affordable design of its cars. Capturing 34% of

Muhamad Zamuren B. Musa, Assistant Manager of the
Research & Development Division, supervises twelve
designers on his team and is the chief designer behind
some of the best selling cars in Malaysia. Zamuren
graduated with a degree in industrial design from the
University of MARA and has won multiple awards in many
design competitions, the most prominent being the MRM
Car Competition. The designer travels frequently
collaborating with famous car design studios and learning
from leading design institutions.
The twelve designers on Zamuren’s team work with a wide variety of Wacom products including
Wacom’s flagship interactive pen display, Cintiq 21UX. The hardware setup comprises of PCs and
Macs and software used includes Photoshop, Illustrator, Alias Studio, Corel Painter, and others.

When working specifically on designs, the designers spend about 60% of their time using Photoshop
and the other 40% on Painter.
Impressing management
Zamuran estimates his team has doubled their efficiency when working on paneling, layout design
and graphic work thanks to the ability of Wacom tablets and displays to digitally produce hand-drawn
artwork. The entire car design process is digital on Zamuran’s team from the basic concept to key
sketches, concept sketches, idea development, idea variation and idea rendering.
In addition, Zamuren revealed that management found his team’s digitally designed ideas more
impressive than those designed using traditional media. Design modifications were quickly managed
shortening the time it takes to move from concept to engineering development. The design team itself
was able to produce more ideas than before offering management a wider variety of choices for new
car concepts.
The design team also feels that the quality of their artwork has improved tremendously. The precision
of the Wacom tablets combined with the versatility of software has enabled the design team to create
designs with finer details. In the past, it was difficult to render a design to an extent that allowed
management to fully grasp the concept. Much time was wasted in trying to achieve the right effect.
However, being able to work on Photoshop and create detail visions of their concepts, complete with
the ability to zoom into detail, has allowed the team to excel.
When asked exactly which of the features they appreciated the most, the design team said the pen’s
pressure and tilt sensitivity as well as the touch strip on the tablet were the most useful features for
their work. The pen pressure sensitivity is important because it allows fine and detailed brush strokes.

Tilt sensitivity allows the designers to take advantage of the ability of Wacom’s Cintiq 21UX pens (built
on Intuos3 pen tablet technology) to sense the angle at which the pen is being tilted. This allows them
to use brushes in Photoshop and Painter as if they were real brushes, and giving them the ability to
add their own unique flair to their artwork. Finally, the touch strips serve a basic but extremely
important time-saving function. They allow the designer to manipulate their canvas—easily zooming in
to work on fine detail and zooming out to view the entire image.

designs. The speed of submitting a new car
proposal has improved a great deal, and
allowed the final production model to be very
close to the digital design.

said that productivity increased 200% while
