Director of Pollination Programs
About the organization
Project Apis m. is a 501 (c) (5) nonprofit organization. Project Apis m.’s mission is to fund and
direct research to enhance the health and vitality of honey bee colonies while improving crop
production. Our organization’s name comes from Apis mellifera, the scientific name for the
European honey bee. Project Apis m. or PAm is the go-to organization at the interface of
honeybees and pollinated crops. We’ve infused over 3.5 million into bee research since our
inception in 2006 to provide growers with healthier bees resulting in better pollination and
increased crop yields. We work very closely with the nation’s commercial beekeepers and
with the top bee scientists in the country. PAm funds research studies, purchases equipment
for bee labs at our universities, and provides scholarships to young bee scientists to encourage
their pursuit of science-based solutions to honey bee challenges. In addition to funding
research, PAm builds programs to improve honey bee health such as Best Management
Practices and honey bee habitat programs. Our organization is governed by an eight-member
board. Our board members are beekeepers representing the major national and state
beekeeping organizations in the country. Four scientific advisors review research proposals and
provide recommendations to the Board.
About the position
The Director of Pollination Programs oversees Project Apis m.’s pollination programs. These
programs include the Seeds for Bees Project in California and Washington, the Honey Bee and
Monarch Butterfly Partnership in the Midwest, and research efforts on honey bee nutrition and
habitat. In a shared capacity with the Executive Director, the Director of Pollination Programs
represents Project Apis m. at national and regional meetings, providing an overview of PAm’s
programs and promoting our nonprofit’s mission. The position requires excellent oral and
written communication skills as well as proficiency in project management. A B.S. or M.S.
degree is required. The successful applicant will exhibit enthusiasm toward and dedication to
serving an industry and providing timely response to inquiries as well as the highest standards
with regard to ethics and integrity.
The following further qualifications preferable:






College-level degree in entomology or agriculturally-related field
Knowledge of honey bee issues and challenges
Beekeeping skill
Three to five years management experience
Nonprofit familiarity
Fiscal management proficiency
The successful applicant will have the potential to take on additional administrative roles with
Project Apis m., which may include but not be limited to:









Managing honey bee pest and disease research
Working with PAm’s Scientific Advisors in developing honey bee research studies
Soliciting additional funding to carry out the mission and goals of Project Apis m.
Participating in PAm’s current partnership projects and cultivating additional
partnerships that complement the mission and goals of the organization
Assuming leadership roles within the beekeeping industry such as participation in the
Honey Bee Health Coalition, Bee-Informed Partnership, and research committees for
significant bee and pollinated crop organizations
Liaising with bee and pollination-dependent crop organizations such as the Almond
Board, other specialty crops requiring pollination, National Honey Board, American
Beekeeping Federation, American Honey Producers Association, etc.
Scheduling and managing board meetings
Conducting outreach and education – public speaking, article writing, website postings,
enewsletter articles, and blogs
Managing administrative elements of a non-profit organization
Reporting structure
The Director of Pollination Programs reports to the Executive Director.
Job Location and Travel
Project Apis m.’s address of record is Paso Robles, CA. PAm has an additional office site in
Shafter, CA. The job location of the Director of Pollination Programs can be somewhat
flexible, but in the contiguous United States and preferably within one of the top honeyproducing states. Considerable travel is necessary and proximity to an airport important.
Salary
The salary for the Director of Pollination Programs is negotiable and commensurate with
experience.
