sad news about a long standing member of the club
Hello all! SAD NEWS ABOUT A LONG STANDING MEMBER OF THE CLUB Unfortunately Derek Eneas passed away last Thursday 12th March after a relatively short battle with an aggressive form of cancer. Derek had been a member of Purley for more than 50 years representing the Tennis and Squash teams for many of those years. He won numerous titles over this time, including 13 consecutive doubles titles with John Wilding and others. He also formed the now flourishing bridge section, and bridge became his main love in his later years and he also excelled at this. If anyone would like to attend the Funeral this will be at Croydon Crematorium at 12:45 on Friday 27 th March, and then afterwards back at Purley Sports Club in the terrace room from 2:00pm. To help cater for numbers please let Paul Eneas know by dropping him an email at [email protected]. He can also provide details of the collection for St Catherine’s Hospice who helped care for him so kindly. Paul Eneas [Derek’s son] is a long standing member of Purley squash section. PLEASE TAKE NOTE EGM about new tennis courts on Saturday week, 28th March in the Cowen Suite at 12.45pm. Ballot vote allowable. All details about ballot process as in my last email and is on the reception desk at Purley. CLOSING TIME FOR BALLOT VOTE IS 12.45 on THURSDAY 26th MARCH. We will need a quorum of 20 people who are ACTUALLY PRESENT AT THE MEETING in order for a vote to be ratified For all those who expressed an interest in playing on artificial clay courts, I have been finding it difficult to get a response from The Wimbledon Club, but I am still hoping that we will be welcomed one weekday next week. The probability is that it will be on Tuesday 24th March starting at either at 12md or 1.30pm. When I receive definite confirmation I will contact all of you who wished to try out the courts. The number of Sainsbury’s ‘Active Kids’ sport vouchers is building up nicely. Many thanks for all that you have donated so far. Please keep bringing them into reception, as Terry will be able to use them for more sports equipment for the juniors. Terry will not be organising club session this Saturday afternoon. Chris Ryan will be in charge. Junior Open Day is between 10 and 12 on Saturday 28th March. ALL WELCOME TO COME ALONG AND TRY TENNIS AT PURLEY …ANY AGE….WHETHER THEY HAVE EVER PLAYED BEFORE OR NOT. Club session on a Tuesday evening starts on Tuesday 14th April. Adult Open Day is on Saturday 25th April between 2 and 5pm. There will be no ’Free April’ as in previous years. Young people’s [16 – 30] tournament and barbecue on Bank Holiday Monday May 4th . Further information from Jeannette Ryan at [email protected] Invitations to this event will be going out shortly. THOSE OF YOU ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE THAT YOUNG PUT THE DATE IN YOUR DIARIES NOW! The cricket section [in the voice of first team captain Scotty] is sending the following invitation to all club members, but especially as you can see, to the tennis section. The astonishingly good looking, intelligent and above all modest members of the Purley cricket section have a big favour to ask. Our annual pre-season curry night is due for the evening of Saturday 11th April at Mirch Masala in South Croydon (same venue as last year). Last year the stylish ladies & gentlemen of the tennis section undoubtedly made the evening and we were hopeful you would extend the invitation once again.
