The Palos Verdes High School English Department requires students enrolled in Eng 1, Eng 1
Honors, Honors Block, or Advanced Placement classes to read selected books during the
summer. Students are responsible for obtaining their own books since the school library is
closed. Local bookstores and libraries are aware of this reading selection and advised to stock
copies. Amazon.com is an additional source in which to purchase books.
Grade 9: English 1 (all students)
If you are enrolled in English 1, you are required to read Elie Wiesel’s Night during the summer.
You are encouraged to annotate inside the book. Please be prepared to write an essay analyzing
the book during the first week of school. You may be able to use your annotations of the books
(either handwritten in the margins of the text or post-it notes) during the writing assessment.
Important note: Students are forbidden to use any other sources of information regarding these
texts. Your notes and ideas must be completely your own. Please refer to the PV High website to
find a definition of, and the penalties for, plagiarism.
*Attention Parents: The PVPUSD district reading list embodies diverse reading levels and
interest areas. Wiesel’s Night is a sometimes horrific account of the author’s experiences at the
height of the Holocaust in the Second World War. While short in page count, the non-fiction
novel presents themes of guilt, forgiveness, and the human experience, a connection to The
Diary of Anne Frank (likely read in 7th grade), and offers a platform for English 1 teachers to
assess the reading and writing levels of incoming freshman.
