FOR THE ARTS
From 17 July to 2 August, all of Queensland will be a
stage for the Queensland Music Festival (QMF), one
of our state’s favourite and most ambitious events.
QMF welcomes leading international and
national artists alongside local talent in a robust
program of concerts, performances and innovative
musical experiences. We will see communities in
Logan, Mount Isa, Townsville and Brisbane creating
and presenting new works that weave together the
stories of our state.
The brand-new Mount Isa Symphony Orchestra
will perform a world-first work of music that has
been specially commissioned for the Festival.
Logan’s Under This Sky will feature more than
700 performers and potential audiences of more
than 20,000 in what is the region’s largest-ever
community engagement project.
No other Australian festival matches the vision
to create spectacular and memorable events in such
a wide geographical expanse, while at the same time
engaging communities on a vast scale and leaving a
legacy for future generations.
The Queensland Government supports QMF through
Arts Queensland and is committed to attracting new
and improved major events to Queensland.

THE CHAIR
Unlike any other Australian festival, Queensland Music
Festival (QMF) transcends boundaries and creates
unique opportunities through long term community
engagement. QMF builds deep connections with
individuals and partners. The success of our work is
based on trust and shared beliefs developed over
many years.
Each project carries the hallmarks of access and
excellence. QMF engages artists of the highest quality
and delivers them to both urban centres as well as
regional and remote communities.
In Brisbane, the wonderful Keys to the City project
will animate the entire city with digital pianos roaming
open-air spaces from South Bank to Sunnybank.
We are extremely grateful to each of our partners

THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Music has been called the food of love, the international
language — Confucius even said it “produces a kind of
pleasure which human nature cannot do without” —
but what it does best is bring people together, often in
ways that nothing else can.
For 2015, Queensland Music Festival (QMF) is
bringing people together to play the piano at the
beach, to waltz in a paddock, to welcome the most
remote orchestra in the world and to celebrate the
incredible diversity that Queensland has to offer.
If you want to participate, you can be a performer
in Keys to the City or even be an artistic director and
program yourself and your friends in the Festival. If you
want to be transported to another realm, you can hear
some of the greatest virtuosi the world has ever seen;
this festival is a chance to satisfy your inner musical
being no matter what you crave.
QMF is state-wide, so you can see singing sensation
Emma Pask in Birdsville, virtuoso violinist Ian Cooper on
Palm Island and Indian veena player Jayanthi Kumaresh
on the Gold Coast. At Brisbane’s Riverstage in our
special Anzac presentation, we’ll be commemorating
the sacrifice of Australians lost in conflict over the last
century, and if jazz is your thing, how would you like to
see indie-pop songstress Megan Washington in concert
with the incredible Marian Petrescu?
Music is indeed food for the soul and transcends
the need for language at all — and Confucius was
right — there will be something in the Festival that you
simply cannot do without. QMF only comes around
every second year and I urge you to get out there and
hear everything you can, join in whenever you can and
energize your life — and those around you — with music!

Internationally renowned James Morrison and jazz
pianist Marian Petrescu will be joined by Australia’s
own soulful songstress, Fatai, to celebrate the
finale of Keys to the City and QMF 2015.
Presented in association with City Sounds,

The City of Logan is a vibrant place full of energy and diversity
woven together by a myriad of stories, both shared and unique,
but all waiting to be told.
Under This Sky is a world premiere production so
spectacular that no mere stage can contain it. Carved into
the banks above Logan Brothers Rugby League field, the
performance space merges with the landscape and the open
night sky provides a stunning backdrop.
The show boasts all original music, written by and for the
community, featuring a cast of more than 700 and exploring
a day in the life of this pulsing city. Musical genres mesh as
gigantic puppets meet fire-twirlers, dancers face-off, a solo
guitarist plays to the night stars, whilst the full-throttle sound
of hotted-up lawnmowers makes way for the thunderous
rhythm of massed drummers.
Logan’s stories are revealed, some with exuberance and
others with tenderness, driven by energy, pride and a true
sense of community.
Under This Sky is a story of joy and identity, of the ordinary
and the extraordinary. This is an epic celebration of place.

A century of the
Anzac spirit
In an international collaboration, Queensland Music Festival
(QMF) will draw on the spirit of the Anzacs to present
One Hundred & One Years, a series of inspiring concerts
that both commemorates the sacrifice made by our armed
forces and celebrates the peace that we enjoy today.
From Wagner to Tipperary, music from the last 101 years
(1914-2015) is interwoven with rarely seen archival footage
and evocative readings sourced from diaries, letters, and
soldiers’ own stories.
In honour of the men and women who fought for their
country, and in reflection on their youth, these openair concerts will put the spotlight on young actors and
musicians, including specially formed 30-piece community
brass bands and a chorus of narrators in both Townsville
and Brisbane.
Celebrating the spirit of reconciliation and respect,
QMF will present, for the first time in Australia, the worldrenowned Saxon Wind Philharmonic from Germany, playing
alongside our stellar Australian Army bands. Don’t miss
your chance to witness this powerful and fitting tribute to
those, past and present, who have laid down their lives in
the pursuit of peace.

Grammy® Award-winning double bassist, Edgar Meyer, hailed
by the New Yorker as “the most remarkable virtuoso in the
relatively unchronicled history of his instrument”, will make his
Australian debut this July.
Meyer, whose uniqueness, flawless musicianship, and gift
for composition have seen him carve out a role in the music
world that is quite simply unparalleled, will perform with the
acclaimed Camerata of St John’s ­— Queensland’s Chamber
Orchestra conducted by Andrew Mogrelia.
This evening of pure musical magic will include a once in a
lifetime opportunity to hear Meyer’s Concerto for Double Bass
and Orchestra, as well as his famous interpretation of the
Double Bass Concerto No.2 by Bottesini.
Meyer will also lead a masterclass for students from
Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.
Audience members will have the opportunity to witness an
artist of unrivalled skill and ability guide some of Queensland’s

Mount Isa Celebrates brings together a star-studded lineup of performing artists, with an impressive array
of instrumental and vocal talent born and bred in the city.
Mount Isa Community Ensembles (MICE) has inspired
the creation of one of the world’s most remote symphony
orchestras. In their debut performance, the orchestra will
share the stage with more than 300 musicians, including
the Mount Isa Community Chorus and Combined
Schools Choir.
Headlining both performances will be jazz star James
Morrison, stunning vocalist Emma Pask, internationally
renowned concert pianist Ambre Hammond, violin
virtuoso Ian Cooper, and the John Morrison Trio.
The grand finale will be a world premiere performance
of Symphony of the Inland Sea by acclaimed Australian
composer, Matthew Dewey. This evocative work is inspired
by the extraordinary landscape in and around this
iconic city.
This project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government
through: Arts Queensland’s Playing Queensland Fund and the Regional Arts
Development Fund, a partnership between the Queensland Government and
Mount Isa City Council to support local arts and culture.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia

In this collaboration with the Queensland Symphony
Orchestra (QSO), the word ‘maestro’ has never been
more apt. Legendary U.S. double bassist, Edgar Meyer,
making his Australian debut, will join forces with
virtuosic trumpeter, James Morrison, to perform the
world’s first double concerto for bass and trumpet.
Specially commissioned by Queensland Music
Festival, QSO and Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra,
the concerto was written by renowned contemporary
composer and violist, Max Savikangas.
The evening’s program begins with Nielsen’s
colourful Maskarade Overture, followed by Savikangas’s
world premiere, and concluding with Beethoven’s
Symphony No.5.A true musical celebration of iconic
and important composers, virtuosic ability, and the

One of the most respected ensembles in existence
today, I Musici is Italy’s oldest continuously active
chamber group. At their first performance in Rome
in 1952, I Musici broke all the rules, playing baroque
concerti with a tight knit ensemble of just twelve
players and no conductor. A year later, their historic
first recording of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons introduced
18th century Italian music to the world.
As part of the 2015 Queensland Music Festival,
QPAC is delighted to welcome Italy’s legendary baroque
string ensemble in a Brisbane-exclusive performance of

Queensland Music Festival continues its commitment
to introducing world-class musicians to regional and
remote communities by sending stunning jazz vocalist,
Emma Pask, way out west with the outstanding John
Morrison Trio for company.
Taking with them an inimitable blend of Latin, jazz
and soul, the quartet will present a series of concerts
and school workshops. These city slickers couldn’t
be more jazzed about the opportunity to visit places
they’ve never seen and kick off in Boonah before flying
off for an appearance at the Jumpers & Jazz Festival
in Warwick. Then it’s off to dazzle Blackall, Barcaldine,
Jundah, and Birdsville before wrapping up the tour in
Mount Isa at the Mount Isa Celebrates concert.

Violinist, Ian Cooper and pianist, Ambre Hammond
will fly across North Queensland and Cape York,
painting a musical landscape that encompasses not
only classical but a vivacious blend of gypsy and jazz.
The itinerary is as eclectic as their collective styles,
fulfilling Queensland Music Festival’s (QMF) pledge to
provide regional and remote communities with access
to world-class talent.
Starting in Mount Isa, these incredible artists
will visit Weipa, Aurukun and Hope Vale to deliver
educational workshops. They will continue their
journey on to Atherton, Innisfail, Charters Towers,
Gladstone, and for the very first time for QMF,
Burketown and Palm Island. The tour connects
with each community through performances and
workshops, and our talented travellers are just as
thrilled to be visiting as the towns are to host them.

the heritage-listed Jimbour House bathed in winter sunlight...

by a burst of melody — the enchanting strains of a Strauss
operetta, filling the brisk air.
Queensland Music Festival (QMF), will once again delight
audiences with festival favourite, Opera at Jimbour ­— where
good food, wine and beautiful music combine. This year, QMF
joins forces with OperaQ’s incredible soloists, their Toowoomba
Community Chorus and Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra.
Together they will perform a semi-staged concert version of
Johann Strauss’s bewitching champagne operetta, Fledermaus
(aka The Bat) — a risqué tale of hidden identity, deception and
revenge, directed by Lindy Hume.
In a first for Jimbour, audience members can join in the
famous ballroom scene, donning masks and waltzing to the
orchestra. Be sure to bring blankets, chairs, cushions and
a mask!

Cameron Patrick, respected Hollywood composer

music it would be practically impossible to create the
emotional highs and lows of a film. In Patrick’s public
lecture, Guiding the Audience’s Emotions, he will
share just how it’s done. Patrick’s credits are diverse and include motion
pictures such as Star Trek into Darkness, UP, Jupiter
Ascending and the upcoming Jurassic World.

Queensland Music Festival is giving young composers
state-wide the chance to create an original score to
accompany a short film judged by an expert panel
including award-winning screen composer and
orchestrator, Cameron Patrick.
Score IT! finalists will take part in a workshop
with top video and digital agency, Fotomedia. At the
concluding awards ceremony, the winning Score IT!
Plus composition will be performed by students from
Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.
The Score IT! competition winners will be announced

Kumaresh is a highly versatile Saraswati veena artist.

The veena itself is India’s most revered and sacred
musical instrument.
Kaivalyakumar, one of India’s most loved and admired
singers, brings the noble tradition of Kirana — the most
creative of all singing styles. The rhythmic texture of this
music is highly intricate and ornamented with grace notes
producing poignant effects.
These talented artists are not only giving in the musical
sense but will also share their expertise in an inspiring

LOVE STORIES
Southern Cross Soloists with special guest Alex Raineri,
present a dynamic program exploring the intimate
relationship between composers and the evolution of
the piano. Tracing the piano’s rise to fame in the 18th
century until present day, Salon features music from
Bach through to the Oscar-winning film composer
Dario Marianelli. The concert is an intriguing exploration
of the fascinating history of the piano, hosted by ABC
Classic FM presenter Damien Beaumont.
A unique cinematic experience interweaving photography,
film and live original music to share the tender stories
so often brushed aside amongst the darkness of
homelessness: a woman saved from suicide by her pet
budgie; the unexpected love of strangers in the street; a
baby born on the edge of homelessness.
These stories form the basis of a new work by awardwinning journalist and filmmaker Trent Dalton, director
of photography David Kelly, internationally renowned
guitarist Karin Schaupp, ARIA nominated quintet Topology
and Fortitude Valley’s 139 Club drop-in centre for Brisbane’s
homeless and at-risk.
Love Stories reveals that amid the pain, loss, isolation
and desperation on the streets there is often warmth,
kindness, community and love.

Twilight in the Red Box will see a series of sublime chamber
performances across three captivating nights.
Presented in the intimate and elegant surrounds of
the State Library of Queensland’s river-side Red Box, this
year’s program supports Queensland’s next generation of
stellar musicians.
The series will be curated by Patrick Murphy from
The University of Queensland, and features performances
by the UQ Chamber Choir (directed by Graeme Morton),
the Pulse Chamber Orchestra (directed by Patrick Murphy)

CQUniversity Schools’ Jazz Festival is an exciting
opportunity for high school students to engage in two
full days of inspirational music making, featuring an
expert panel of respected musicians, educators, and
the staff from the Central Queensland Conservatorium
of Music. The stimulating and challenging program
includes individual clinics for jazz and vocal ensembles,
section specific workshops, adjudicated performances,
informal jams, and an energetic finale concert.
The Stradbroke Chamber Music Festival is a series of six
concerts held at intimate venues in the magnificent
natural setting of North Stradbroke Island. This year,
as well as masterworks by Bach, Haydn, Schubert and
others, festival-goers will experience the fiery passion
of the Argentinian tango in a concert featuring French
violinist Cyril Garac and Australian bandoneon player
Maggie Ferguson. The festival will climax with the world
premiere of a Straddie-themed piece by Berlin-based
Australian composer Paul Hankinson.

The Cape York Instrumental Project and the Yarrabah Band
Festival have been assisted by the Australian Government through
the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. The Cape
York Instrumental Project Artist in Residence program is supported
by the Queensland Government, through Arts Queensland and the
Department of Education and Training, in partnership with the
Australian Government, through the Australia Council for the Arts.
Queensland Music Festival (QMF) is deeply committed
to supporting music throughout Queensland, and has
been working with Indigenous communities in the
Torres Strait, Cape York and Yarrabah since 2008.
The Cape York Instrumental Project, delivered in
partnership with the Cape York Aboriginal Australian
Academy (CYAAA), exemplifies QMF’s commitment
to access and excellence in every corner of the State.
Through musician residencies and teacher
professional development, the program is delivered
year-round to remote schools in Aurukun, Coen and
Hope Vale, supporting 50 young musicians across
the three campuses. An annual intensive three-day
Band Camp for all three schools culminates in a public
performance at Jazz on the Green in Palm Cove.
In 2014 the CYAAA School Band also took centre-stage
at Tropical Jam to an audience of more than 4,000 as
part of the G20 Finance Ministers’ Conference in Cairns.
Yarrabah, located 50 km from Cairns, is the largest
Aboriginal community in Australia. In 2012 QMF was
invited to help revive the Yarrabah Brass Band, founded
in about 1910 but dormant since the mid-seventies.
Since the core band was re-established, the community
has embraced an annual free music festival, produced
by QMF, showcasing the talent of the local community
together with high-profile artists such as Busby
Marou and Thelma Plum and attracting audiences to
the community from the whole region. QMF will be
returning to present the third Yarrabah Band Festival
in November 2015.

Festival (QMF) does.
Regional Queensland is rich in talent, aspirations,
strong networks and vibrant communities, but regional
and remote areas can face a whole spectrum of issues
including geographic isolation and a lack of access to
educational opportunities.
QMF aims to make a difference through music, but
our work would not be possible without the continually
growing assistance from philanthropic foundations
and generous individuals who appreciate the role
the Festival plays in galvanising arts activity and
community resilience.
