Who can believe that its Week 12 already! What an amazing term we’ve had here at the
BISC! There’s just a few classes, essays and events here left on the calendar. The exam
period is just around the corner but that doesn't mean that the fun has stopped. The
spring sun has arrived and shows no signs of going away and everyone is getting ready
for what promises to be a great End of Term Ceremony!

#GetYourStamps
End of Term is Coming up fast and you
have a limited number of opportunities
left to collect all of your BISC Passport
Stamps! Make sure you consult the
Student Services activity Calendar for
a list of upcoming workshop and
learning opportunities!
Also ensure you get your stamps
properly noted by Student Services,
Mitch, Skyler or Dr. Hyland in order to
ensure your passport is fully up to
date!
Reminder: ALL STUDENTS must complete the Departures Form
(please click here) by 10pm Thursday 12th March
We need you to do this for several reasons:
1. To fulfil UKBA requirements, we need to know when you are departing the EU to fly home,
2. To communicate your check-out date with other departments on-site for catering and safety
purposes,
3. To organise appropriate transfers to Heathrow.
If you do not yet know when you are flying home, but you do know your onward travel plans
and you would like to request a seat on a coach, you must complete this form by the deadline.
You can submit your home-bound flight details at a later date, but you MUST do this before you
check out of Bader.
Please note the official departures date is Wednesday 9th April
Transfer coaches will go to London Heathrow Terminal 2 only. Coaches will be organised to
ensure students booked on flights through Odyssey Travel have enough time to check-in and go
through customs. Please see the transportation policy for further details.

Oslo, Norway is a surprisingly tranquil city, but is by no means boring. No
matter what kind of traveler you are, Oslo will adapt to your needs.
This week’s Destination Inspiration is submitted
by Guest Travel Writer Zelia Bukhari
Essential Information:
Return Flight from Gatwick: £150
Currency: Norwegian Krone; 1 CAD= 6NOK
Accommodation: Hostels range from 20 –50
Krone pp per night.
The main attractions of Oslo can all be visited
in one day, assuming that you’re ready to head out at 10am. Oslo is an
extremely walkable city, so there is no need to take the underground
between tourist attractions. I’d suggest starting out the morning at the Oslo
Opera Museum, followed by the National Gallery, where The Scream by
Edvard Munch is located, The Royal Palace, the Oslo City hall, the National
Theatre, the Museum of Modern Art, are all also within a 20 minute walk.
Walking in Oslo flies by and will not feel like a chore.
Oslo is a very expensive city. Cooking for yourself is preferable to eating out,
which can be costly. I would suggest sourcing food in the Grünerløkka area,
where you’ll be able to find reasonably priced main dishes and produce
markets, as well as a laid-back nightlife. Oslo’s nightlife is good fun, but if you
want a livelier time, the main street of Karl Johan, though touristy, consists of
many different bars, pubs and nightclubs.
Someone could have literally dropped me into the middle of Oslo, Norway,
and I could have sworn I was back in Canada. The locals in Oslo speak
fantastic English, and are some of the nicest people I have ever met, very
caring and kind. Oslo is an extraordinary and intimate city— certain to
provide you with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

New Publication Announcement:
Dr Shara Rambarran (MUSC171/INTS324/INTS300)
Dr Shara Rambarran’s chapter titled “‘You’ve Got No Time For Me’:
Martin ‘Sugar’ Merchant, British Caribbean Musical Identity and the
Media” has recently been published in Reggae from Yaad: Traditional
and Emerging Themes in Jamaican Popular Music (Ian Randle
Publishers). She discusses the role of music and culture in the
relationship between Britain and Jamaica in the post-independence
1960s. Dr Rambarran uses 1990s anti-Britpop group Audioweb
(reggae/dub/electronica/rock), led by British Jamaican musician Sugar
Merchant, as her main focus. Here, she discusses the music of Sugar
Merchant/Audioweb, and their lack of support from the music industry
and media during the post-Thatcher era. Dr Rambarran has
successfully presented her work on this subject at Queen’s University,
Kingston and at the University of the West Indies, in Kingston,
Jamaica!

‘Making Connections’: The Spring 2015 End of Term Conference
In recent years we’ve held an End of Term Conference to showcase student research here at the
BISC, and several of you took part in the November 2014 event. At the end of the Winter Term
the Research Committee felt that we should hold a larger event to give more people the
opportunity to share their work. As such, ‘Making Connections’ is a full-day conference, to be held
in the Castle Conference Room on Sunday 29th March, starting at 10am and finishing around
5.30pm.
We had so many people interested in taking part that it has been necessary to divide the day up
into four panel sessions, each with 4 papers and some time for discussion and debate afterwards.
The programme is extremely diverse, with everything from Scottish nationalism to World War Z on
the agenda, and papers are drawn from across the curriculum here at the BISC. The format is like
the academic conferences that many of the BISC faculty attend throughout the year: a chance to
hear new research and to discuss ideas, with coffee breaks throughout the day to help keep
attention focused!
Our keynote speaker, opening the conference at 10am, will be Dr Clare Horrocks of Liverpool John
Moores University. Clare will be talking about her work in producing a digital archive of the
Victorian magazine Punch, and the uses of new technology in our study of the past.
A detailed conference programme will be emailed out next week, but please keep the date free
and come to support your friends and peers as the castle community celebrates the excellent work
that its members have done this year. Stay for one session or stay for the whole day: it’s entirely
up to you!
Dr Peter Lowe, Research Director

Feeling Sick? Need to see a doctor?
Make your own appointment!
…But how exactly is it done?
OPTION ONE
The physician comes on site every Monday (12:00-13:00). To make your appointment for
an on site consultation, go to Bader reception on Monday morning and request to see
the doctor. The receptionist will let you know what time slot she has put you down for.
If it is no longer Monday (prior to 12:00) and you require a physician’s services asap
(cannot wait for Monday)… see option 2
OPTION TWO
For same day appointments, call the Herstmonceux Health Centre at 08:30 sharp (right
when the centre opens)! Same day appointment slots fill up quickly so it is important to
be timely. Appointments that you want to book ahead of time (1 week plus in advance)
you can call at any point.
The number for the centre is: 01323 833535
