An England Athletics Team of largely junior athletes enjoyed good
results in the Czech spa town of Podebrady reports Andi Drake. For
the second time in 2015 an England athlete featured on the podium
at an EAA Permit Race Walk Meeting!
Tom Bosworth 1:29:16 and Heather Lewis 1:43:36 took the British
Athletics 20k titles at Hillingdon reports Chris Smith.
U18 5 km

Sophie Lewis Ward took 3 in the U18 5km on her England debut
with a personal best of 24:17, backed up by fellow debutant Italian
based Molly Davey who also improved her personal best to 25:30 in

9 . Teresa Zurek (GER) enjoyed a gun to tape win and Lewis-Ward
was in a three way battle for the remaining podium places with
Anthea Mirabello (ITA) and Zurek’s teammate Julia Richter. The pair
dropped Richter after 3km and Mirabello secured second only in the
final kilometre. Lewis Ward had a busy week: on Tuesday following
this event she lined up in the freestyle heats at the national
swimming championships!
U20 10km Women
Emma Achurch could not repeat her fine performance from Lugano
in March, where she was a close second to Eleonora Domenici (ITA).
Neither were a match for Noemi Stella (ITA) who won in 46:56, with

Domenici 4 in 49:12 and Achurch 9 in 50:39. Heather Butcher

placed 23 in 56:24 on her England debut.
U20 10km Men
Callum Wilkinson bounced back from a disqualification in Lugano to
th
equal his personal best in 4 with 44:15. Wilkinson was part of a
group of six 20 seconds behind the leading trio going through 5km
in 21:55. Miloslav Urbanik (SVK) was a clear winner in 42:36, while
Wilkinson broke away from his pursuing pack by 7km in a
performance that brings him a GB&NI Team qualifying time for the
European Race Walking Cup in May. Cameron Corbishley lost out on
a top 10 position with disqualification at 8km when heading for a
th
sub-45 minute clocking while in 9 place. 15 year old Tom
Partington broke 50 minutes (49:52) for the first time on his England
debut with a strong even paced effort splitting 5km in 24:25 to
th
place 30 . His fellow U18 debutant Tim Snook clocked his fourth
th
quickest 10km for 36 after a fast start in 52:51.
20km Women
Johanna Atkinson dropped out at this race for the second year in
succession feeling discomfort in her hamstring and stepping off at
th
6km. Leicester Walking Club’s Tatyana Gabellone was a fine 5 in
1:35:51 on her return to the Italian team after a gap of several
years. Bethan Davies (Wales) completed her first 20km for two
th
years after missing most of 2014 with injury, 25 in 1:48:23; and
th
Rebecca Collins (North Down AC) was 28 in 1:55:45.
Team Leader Andi Drake said, “This was a strong set of junior
performances and we really focussed in the performance process
working again with Commonwealth Games Team Physio Dan
Nicholls to support the physical preparation of the athletes. It was
good to add another qualifier to the pool for the European Cup and
give positive experiences to several debut athletes.”
It was Bosworth’s fourth title and clearly he was using it as a
nd
training effort. Dominic King took 2 in an isolated 1:39:26 after his
brother Daniel was disqualified. Richard Gerrard took bronze in
1:47:31.

Emma Achurch, 2 in the BA Championships, removed Ellie
Dooley’s British U20 best from the record books with 1:45:29 to
take the Race Walking Association title. Bethan Davies won British
Athletics bronze in 1:47:29.

The top two U20 men Callum Wilkinson and Cameron Corbishley
walked a fraction outside the European Cup qualification time in
45.03 and 45:36 respectively reports Chris Smith, but both have
bettered 45 minutes recently.

Chris Snook took the U17 men's title in 24:16 and was awarded the
style award to the delight of his mum and coach Verity. Tom
Partington, another walker with international parents, took silver
just ten seconds back in 24:26.
Ben Allen retained the U15 boys’ title after straining his back at
school a few days before the event. Whilst the U13 boys was a
battle royal with four walkers within 32 seconds as Archie Walter

beat the Alkhamesi brothers. Faris and Hisham into 2 and 4 with

Chris Smith league winner Kai Cindy splitting the brothers for 3
knocking 40 off his much improved personal best.
On the girls side Rebecca Greatbatch had a solo win in the U20
women’s 10k and Sophie Lewis Ward was well clear in 25:46
although she slowed after keeping the early pace with the boys over
5k.
Ana Garcia leas home the U15 Girls 3k in 15:44 with Kara Lane only
20 seconds behind in 16:04 winning a great battle for the medals
ahead of Lucy Lewis Ward also 16:04 and Evie Butcher 16:08, a race
worth watching on Northern Race Walking YouTube.
Finally style winner Suki Ly took the under 13 girls in 11:08 just
three seconds behind the boys winner with Molly Meleady-Hanley
taking second in 12.12.

Adam Cowin won the 10Km Race Walking Championships on the
NSC Perimeter Roadway in a time of 50:16 reports Bridget Kaneen.
Isle of Man Veteran Athletes' Club (IOMVAC) walker Richard Gerrard
was runner up recording 50:59, with Dave Walker of the host club
third in 56:40. Louise Smith of IOMVAC won the ladies title in a time
of 65:11 just over 2 minutes ahead of club mate Louise Hollings
67min 57sec and Jayne Artz third.
Rebecca Greatbatch of Manx Harriers took the 5km title recording
31:01 ahead of Northern AC's Erika Kelly. Stephen Waddington won
the 3km in 17:47 ahead of Leah Goddard of Northern AC. Lottie
Dawson claimed the 1km title recording 8:24 with Grayse FletcherMerryweather second, Orla Goddard third and Ben Dawson fourth.

Stuart Le Noury walked to victory in the second race of the Channel
Island Ceramics sponsored classic Guernsey races when adding the
Eric Waldron 2 miles trophy to his recently won Chilcott Cup reports
Rob Elliott. With the company of brother Jason and Rob Elliott for
the first of the eight laps, he gradually pulled away to pass the half
way point in 7:35, ten seconds up on his brother. Elliott was now
well adrift in 8:04. The leading woman at this point was Olga
Sinkevica in 10.29, with a sixteen seconds lead over the next woman
Marie Macdonald. With a slight slowing down, on a warm evening,
Stuart finished in 15:19 to retain the trophy and record a new
personal best time by a few seconds, followed by Jason in just under
16 minutes. Olga held on to her lead as fastest woman with 20:57,
with Marie in second place but dropping well back.

No close finishes in the 2nd South Yorkshire League, with most
places decided soon after the start of the last 500m lap and the
smallest gap at the finish being 9 seconds reports Brian Adams.
Natalie Myers quickly opened up a 20 sec gap over Alana Zeidler on
the first lap; they then walked at almost the same pace over the
remaining 5 laps.
Simon Pugh stayed ahead of all but Ana Garcia to take second place
number two in the league. This takes him to the top with the two
race winners Ana and Lara MacColl sharing second spot.

2015 series of the Veterans AC five mile road races in Battersea
Park.

Hewitt Cup 2015 - Round 1 (Tue. 21st Apr.)
Ben Allen (Leysland High School) took his ninth victory in this long
established race walking series (75 years and still going!) well clear
of the Blaby Stokes Striders trio of Jake Fish, Jack Harrison and Julian
Mason Boot reports George Smolinski.
All the girls beat their previous best times in the girl’s event. Lyla
Bryan continues to impress and won her first ever Hewitt Cup race.
She finished ahead of team-mates Erin Gurney, Rhea Harris and
Megan Hughes.
In the Hewitt Cup series the individual standings are based on a
handicapping system which encourages all competitors to improve,
or get close to, their best times over the 3 race series.
In the boy’s event Jack has taken an early lead in the league
standings ahead of previous winners Jake and Ben.
In the girl’s section, Megan, tops the table ahead of Lyla, Rhea and
Erin in that order.
Megan, Jake and Rhea caught the eye of the judges and won style
awards.

Twelve competitors lined up to race the open 2000m walk writes
Bethan Davies. After a little unrest on the start line due to a
hammer induced false start it was Swansea's Megan StrattonThomas who lead from the gun. After a shockingly fast 200m by
Megan (really did scare me) Cardiff ACC's Bethan Davies took up
residence at the front of the race. By the second lap the race had
split into two, with a brave bunch of novices battling it out near the
back and Martin Bell’s team fighting for the front.
Jordan Price took the lead for the men, while Daniel McKerlich who
was in second in the men’s race had a tooth and nail battle
throughout with Amy Phipps. This pair was closely chased by Amelia
Davey and Matthew Phipps. John Collins followed this group but
unfortunately dropped out. The novices, who were a little stunned
at the pace of their more experienced competitors all put up
sterling debut performances, with Steve Julien almost pipping Jay
Briggs to the line, but he thought better of the spurt once cautioned
by the judges.
A fabulous collection of personal bests and times in rather blustery
conditions.

10km Road Walk, Les Amarreurs, Vale, (Sun. 26th Apr.)
Stuart Le Noury hung on to claim victory in the Heritage Group
Championships as brother Jason ran out of road as he closed the
gap in the final kilometres. Long-time leader Stuart had forged a
comfortable winning lead in the early stages of the race but found
he had a race on his hands as the gap closed to within two seconds
at the finish line as he won in 51:22. Third place went to Rob Elliott
in 54:38, a slight improvement on his January race time, since he
has found a new lease of life in his races. On a misty day but in
conditions almost perfect for racing, women’s winner Olga Sinkevica
in 1:08:05 removed 1:39 off her previous best time as she led home
Marie Macdonald and Kay Coulson, the latter two also creating new
best times by almost two minutes in Marie’s case and one minute in
Kay’s. On a day for new best times, Peter Beckerleg also improved
his by 37 seconds in the men’s section.

Birchfield Harriers Open Meeting (Sun. 26th Apr.)
Ben Allen just missed his personal best at the Birchfield Open; a rare
chance for U17’s to be part of a track and field event with medals
reports Chris Smith. Considering the midlands has quite a few under
11’s it was a shame only one boy contested the 800 metres.

the back it did indeed sometimes look as though my legs were
slightly bent on some first contact. However slow-motion and still
pictures proved the exact opposite – both contact and straightening
were correct. Often the leading leg was even perfectly straight well
before ground contact!
Two of the short videos were taken at incredible speeds (40% faster
than racing speed!) in order to ascertain what precisely occurred
under real stress, which had never been the case at the start of the
recent race. Amazingly, even in these scenes both the contact and
the straightening were correct, which actually surprised me. Thus it
seems that some walkers are not helped by the lack of electronic
judging assistance at events, but even disadvantaged by this,
completely the opposite of what generally occurs! In my case I
would definitely press for cameras to be used in order to prove that
IAAF rules are being followed. Has anybody else experienced
problems in this apparently unusual way?
Since I have studied sport successfully in two countries and have
spent some time coaching walkers I believe that my analysis of the
films is correct, but it would be informative to hear some top
judges’ views. Please write to me at [email protected] and I will
send copies of the films with some notes on the shown speeds and
styles. I believe these clips could even be useful for coaching and
judge training sessions.
By the way, I have written 15 books on various sports and am
presently working on a collection of historical interest on various
sports from 1960 till 1980, including many anecdotes on top walkers
I have had the pleasure to meet or train with. Arthur Thomson and
Shaun Lightman are two of my former Metropolitan WC club mates
still active and I am pleased to see that their excellent performances
continue. As soon as the book is finished I will also advertise it for
sale in race walking echelons.

Dear Editor RWR
Many years ago I was a relatively good junior race walker who gave
up the event because of repeated shin-splint problems. I moved on
to running, orienteering and cycling but have now come back to
walking again as a pensioner in order to vary the training stress on
joints. Since walking was fun I worked on my style again, felt that
everything was well within the modern definitions and recently
entered the German 20km championships which Steve Allen also
raced in. There I expected to achieve about 140 minutes and soon
got into an easy, fair rhythm of 6:50 kilometres – only to receive 2
warnings inside 3 km for ‘late straightening’!
Totally shocked and depressed I left the race voluntarily and soon
had a friend film my action at various speeds and various style
emphasises. Owing to very short, bow-legs and unusual muscle at
