Club’s future a key topic at AGM

On Wednesday, April 20, more than 250 principal members
turned up for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Keppel Hall.
President Lai Mun Onn called the meeting to order and the AGM
commenced at 6.30pm sharp. After feedback from the floor,
the Minutes of last year’s AGM and EGM, Annual Report and
Accounts were adopted.
The main agenda of the AGM
was concerning the future of the
Club with the land lease expiring
in 2021. To address this, the
Management Committee (MC) have
created a development task force
consisting of three groups looking
into three specific areas: social club,
golf and finance. Please refer to page
five for the full listing of members in
the development task force groups.

members with the relevant expertise
and knowledge in the three
respective areas to volunteer to serve
in the development task force groups.

Continuing with golf updates,
Captain C.S. Kong began with
saying that Keppel Club should look
at self-renewal rather than simply
reminiscing the good old days as

gone in five years’ time. Mr Kong
mentioned that the MC was looking
into signing reciprocal agreements
with three overseas clubs:
a) Tanjong Puteri (Johor,
Malaysia)
b) Palm Springs Golf &
Country Club (Batam,
Indonesia)
c) Palm Resort Golf &
Country Club (Johor,
Malaysia)
He encouraged members to
pick up golfing in these overseas golf
clubs so that they could share and
collect data on these various clubs,
which will help the decision making
process and narrow down viable
options for Keppel Club to acquire or
lease a golf course for the future.

previously proposed plans to acquire
sites at Arcadia Road and Bukit
Panjang Road for a social club have
been withdrawn. In late March this
year, three new sites were proposed:
a) Bukit Batok West Ave 8
b) Yishun Ave 1
c) Seletar Aero Space

President Lai also gave an update on the ongoing
fraud case investigation, announcing that three more
defendants have been added to the case. He reiterated
that he could not comment on the case further due to the
sub judice rule. Members who did not attend the AGM
will receive these updates via mail.
During the Any Other Business (AOB) segment,
the MC addressed the concerns raised in the six letters
regarding property tax, fraud case and future development
of the club. Last but not least, there was a contest for the
position of Swimming & Entertainment (S & E) Convenor
between the incumbent Mr Leo Yeow and Mr Ronald
Phua. Mr Ronald Phua emerged as the elected candidate
to become the new S & E Convenor for the ensuing year
2016/2017.

The AGM was called to a close at 9.06pm and
members then enjoyed a sumptuous spread for dinner at
Keppel Hall catered by all five restaurants.
Keppel Club and Changi Golf Club
sign reciprocal agreement
On the afternoon of April 19, 2016,
representatives from both Keppel Club
and Changi Golf Club gathered to sign a
reciprocal agreement at Keppel Club’s
E-Sarn Thai restaurant.
Captain C.S. Kong signed the agreement on
behalf of Keppel Club while Changi Golf Club
was represented by Captain Vincent Teo. The warm
interaction between Captain Kong and Captain Teo
was certainly indicative of the friendships to be
formed between members of both clubs.

Seeing Europe on a riverboat
The charming AmaBella riverboat was getting
ready to sail up the romantic River Danube on
the beautiful Sunday afternoon of Dec 13, 2015.
This was Advent, and the boat was energised with
Christmas joy as we left Budapest to embark on
our Christmas Markets cruise.
Anchored on calm waters near
the Hungarian capital city’s grand and
famous Chain Bridge in the beautiful
landscape of the Danube bend, the
AmaBella had been receiving guests
the day before – 110 in all – from
Australia, Canada, China, Japan, the
United Kingdom, the United States
and the 14 of us from Singapore.

Hungarian Gypsy music filled the
boat’s restaurant the moment a trio,
resplendent in Gypsy costume, came
on board. The evening’s highlight was
the beautiful “Illumination Cruise”
through the heart of Budapest when
our boat, herself nicely lit up with
Christmas décor, sailed past glowing
grand buildings and monuments.

The following day, all the guests
were taken on AmaBella’s city tour,
which ended with a visit to the city’s
Christmas Market. It was beginning
to look a lot like Christmas, and it
was the first of a series of Christmas
Markets that would wow us.

Dec 14. The day began with a tour of

A pinch of Salt
A pinch of Black Pepper Crushed
1. Bring water to boil,
cook spaghetti for
about 7-9minutes. Drain
dry the pasta and sprinkle with olive oil evenly, leave to cool and set aside.
2. Peel the tiger prawns with the tail on, score the back of the prawn by using a
small knife and remove the vein, wash and pat dry.
3. Heat the sauté pan with medium heat, pour in the olive oil and slowly sweat
the chopped garlic till fragrant (golden brown).
4. Sauté the chilli padi and prawn for 2 -3 minutes. Add in the cooked pasta and
toss well.
5. Deglaze with chicken/vegetable stock and season with salt & pepper.
6. Infuse with the chopped laksa leaves and toss thoroughly for a minute.
7. Plate the pasta and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil. Ready to serve – bon
apetit!
New LED lightings installed
at driving range
Before: Metal halide floodlights.
After: New LED floodlights.
Previously consisting of primarily metal-halide floodlights, the lighting at the driving range has
recently been upgraded to LED-based ones, which provide a wider coverage and are more
energy-saving. The older metal-halide floodlights, which were located in a high position at the
two sides of the driving range, were challenging for the maintenance crew as they had to climb
very high to do any checks or repairs.
The five new EYE 400w LED floodlights are located
on the front of the driving range, making it easier and
less risky for the maintenance crew for their regular
checks. In addition, LED lights are brighter, more
directional and have a much longer lifespan compared
to metal-halide lights. In the long run, the upgrade to
LED lightings at the driving range will not only reduce
maintenance costs for the club, it also provides an
enhanced driving range experience for our members
and golfers.

MC and Sub-Committee Appreciation Game 2016
A good game of golf despite
inclement weather

A total of 28 players from the Management Committee (MC) and
Sub-Committees of Keppel Club gathered on April 9, 2016 for
the MC and Sub-Committee Appreciation Game, traditionally
played a few weeks prior to the Club’s Annual General Meeting.
The players were divided into seven flights, each consisting of a
mixed team of four from the MC and Sub-Committees.

The game officially started at
12.13pm under sunny skies but
suddenly turned overcast with heavy
rain after four holes and players had
to stop for two hours due to the rain.
Despite the inclement weather, most
the players managed to complete nine
holes at around 6pm. After the game,
the players proceeded to Tee Top
for a well-deserved and sumptuous
dinner.
The rain certainly did not dampen
the moods and bonding of the players
and the game was indeed a great
opportunity for members of both the
MC and various Sub-Committees to
mingle and get to know each other
better.

Lady Captain’s team vs Lady Vice-Captain’s team
A day of laughter and fun
Sunday March 20, 2016 marked a fabulous day
for Keppel ladies’ golfers, as they played in the
annual Lady Captain vs Lady Vice-Captain’s
golf game.
The friendly game is one of the many fun
initiatives to foster stronger bonds between the female
golfers at the club.
As expected among our lovely Keppel ladies, there
was plenty of laughter and camaraderie to go around.

Chung cheerily led their respective teams to a fun day
out on the course.
The ladies later headed for a sumptuous dinner at
Peony Jade restaurant.

customer service staff at the Jackpot Lounge
Hitting the Jackpot

Ms Normah binte Marican (left) and Ms Ivy Ng
Ms Normah binte Marican has been a Keppel club staff since
June 1996 and Ms Ivy Ng recently joined the Club in February.
Both of them are customer service staff at Keppel Club’s Jackpot
Lounge, each bringing rich and varied experiences to the table.
We find out more about what goes on for them at work.
How is a typical day of work/shift
like for you?
How did you get into this line of
work?
Ivy and Normah: We handle the
administrative work at the Jackpot
Lounge, such as helping members
collect their cash winnings and
keying in meter data from the
jackpot machines into the computer.
We will also assist members and
their guests should they need help in
using the jackpot machines.
Ivy: I started working at the casino
at Genting Highlands, Malaysia, in
1998 and worked there till August
2010. After that I had stints at
Singapore Island Country Club and
Tiong Bahru Football Club doing
similar work. Subsequently, I joined
Keppel Club in February this year.
We work in 2 shifts: The first shift is
from 8.30am to 3.30pm (Sun to Thu)
and 8.30am to 4pm (Fri and Sat)
and the second shift is from 4pm to
12am.
Tell us more about the facilities at
the Jackpot Lounge.
Ivy & Normah: We have a total of
28 jackpot machines, 24 that are
note-operated and four that are
coin-operated. Three new jackpot
machines were recently added for
our members’ enjoyment.
Normah: My first cashiering job
was at the now defunct Yaohan
Departmental Store located at
Parkway Parade. I then moved to
Bukit Batok and stopped working
due to my mother’s passing and

while I decided to go back to work
and I saw a recruitment notice for
a cashier position at Keppel Club. I
went for the interview and was told
to start work the next day!
Describe your experience of
working at Keppel Club.
Normah: I enjoy the freedom of
being able to do my job well and
the management usually does not
interfere in our work unless there are
specific complaints or issues raised
by members. My superiors are great
and for the past almost 20 years, I
can say I am happy to go to work
each day/shift.
Ivy: Compared to the places I have
worked at before, working at the
Club really feels like heaven! I like
the pleasant surroundings and nice
co-workers at the Club.
What was the most interesting
incident that happened at work?
Normah: I remember this member
striking a big $38,000 jackpot prize
about six or seven years ago. It must
be beginner’s luck as she just got
her membership at that time. The
usual daily jackpot prizes are around
$1000 to $2000, so seeing the
member win the $38,000 jackpot
prize was quite special.

Keppelites take part in Inter-club
Singles League 2016

The first tournament for 2016 organised by the Singapore Tennis
Association was held from March 12 to April 9. Tennis players
from different sports clubs in Singapore gathered for the singles
league to vie for the Men’s “A”, “B”, “C”, “D” and the Ladies’
“A” and “B” titles.
Keppel Club was represented in
the Men “C” and “D” grades while
the Ladies’ team was represented in
the “A” grade.
Our Ladies’ team fought their
way to a respectable third placing
behind unbeaten Singapore Cricket
Club and Filipino Club (we beat
them but lost out on a count back
for the runner-up spot).
The Men’s “D” team qualified
for the semi-finals and were very
unfortunate to meet a very strong
Korean-based Tesaja team. We lost
3-0 to them.

Pumped up members jive to
Let’s Dance party
Members and guests enjoyed themselves at
the Let’s Dance Party which happened on the
evening of March 19. They danced to the
beats of the songs performed by the popular
live band, Adil and Friends, who returned
to play at Keppel Club after a year’s hiatus.
After enjoying the delicious buffet dinner, the
participants did a combination of ballroom,
Latin and line dancing into the late hours of the
evening.

Several participants walked off with the top lucky
draw prizes of red and white wine. Some members of
the management committee, including Vice-President
Mr Eric Tan and spouse and Swimming & Entertainment
Convenor Mr Leo Yeow and spouse also graced the

Understanding arthritis

On March 23, 2016, just 15 minutes before 7pm, the aerobic
studio looked really empty except for a few members who had
arrived early to enjoy the refreshments of coffee, tea and finger
food. One started to wonder if the health talk on arthritis by
invited guest Dr Looi Kok Poh would have a high absentee rate.
Fortunately, in a span of just a few minutes, more attendees
streamed in for registration. Eventually, total of 80 participants
attended the talk, including 10 walk-in members who signed up
just before the talk started.
Before the talk began, a prizegiving ceremony was held for the
winners of Gym Battle-Squat Burpees
January Challenge. Prizes in the form
of restaurant vouchers (sponsored by
Mr Lawrence Tay of ‘’Food Haven
restaurant”) were presented to the
winners. They also each received a
medal from Sports Department.

Dr Looi started the talk with
a basic and simplified explanation
of what arthritis is: an inflammation
of the joint causing pain, stiffness,
redness, swelling and in serious
cases, loss of use of limbs. He
further elaborated that it is common
for many to experience pain,
swelling and stiffness of the joints in
the upper and lower limbs, as well
as the back. The participants picked
up useful knowledge and tips on
how arthritis can be treated. Despite
the seriousness of the topic, Dr
Looi managed to keep the talk very
light-hearted with some jokes and
recounted his personal experiences
as a doctor, much to the enjoyment
of the participants. The regular bursts
of laughter from the audience was
certainly something not expected
from such a serious and dry subject.
The talk ended at 8.45pm after
a short Question and Answer session
from the floor. A plaque was also
presented to Dr Looi by a committee
member, Mr Alan Lee, as a token of
appreciation.

I love the good vibes and
environment of the Club. In addition,
my students are a warm group
of ladies who are positive about
learning and enjoying DWW.
Share with us your most memorable
experiences teaching at Keppel Club.
Seeing students recover from
injury after taking DWW classes
gives me great satisfaction. A student
recently told me, “If you can teach
(DWW) till you are 80 years old, I
will follow you!”
Ms Pamela Sahai and her enthusiastic students.
Although it may look easy and leisurely at first glance, Deep
Water Workout (DWW) can actually burn 400-600 calories
an hour and provide an all-rounded workout, working the
cardiovascular system, core muscles and improve muscular
endurance. We spoke to Ms Pamela Sahai, a DWW instructor
with close to two decades of teaching experience and has been
teaching DWW at Keppel Club for the last 15 years.
Tell us about your background in
fitness and teaching.
I started out with teaching
aerobic dancing classes 22 years ago
at schools and subsequently began
exploring aqua aerobics to provide
a more interesting experience for my
students. In the process of teaching
aqua aerobics, a DWW instructor
from the United States contacted me
and asked me if I was keen to learn
more about DWW.
I went with the idea and
took classes (both theory and
practical) for about six months
before becoming a qualified DWW
instructor and it is my 18th year as a
DWW instructor this year.

DWW is a workout that has zero
impact and targeted at working
the core muscles. It is suitable
even for non-swimmers and those
who are suffering from existing
injuries. It can also help to improve
and correct poor body posture as
well as expedite recovery from
injury.
How do you usually prepare for your
DWW classes?
I may not enter the water
during classes but I will go to the
pool in my own time and think of
new routines or workouts for my
participants for upcoming lessons. In
order to keep the lessons fresh and
interesting, I have a combination of
circuit training, running, distance
training, sprints and sit ups so that
my participants can get a top to toe
workout experience.
