OLLI SUMMER 2015 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Registration Opens May 22 @ 9AM! A Rough History of Disbelief Friday(s), Jun 05–Jun 19 ● 1:00 PM–2:30 PM 85% of people surveyed worldwide practice one of many religions. Of the 15% who aren't allied with an established religion, perhaps half are 'disbelievers' of one kind or another. We'll watch the three episodes of Jonathan Miller's PBS series which presents the long history of disbelief and features interviews with skeptics, philosophers and clerics. We will also discuss the relationship between belief and disbelief, and the place of each in modern society. Bio(s): Walter Coffey - Walter Coffey majored in political science at the University of California at Berkeley during the Free Speech Movement and hasn't stopped talking since. Managing to avoid graduating he moved on to hold more than 20 different jobs, developing either a broad and varied work history or a reputation for not being able to hold a job. Finally settling into working as a self-employed bookseller he continues to judge books by their covers. He shared peer-leader duties for the Chico Book Group class for several years and until writing this paragraph has successfully avoided referring to himself in the third person. Art & Eats Thursday(s), Jun 04–Jun 25 ● 1:00 PM–3:00 PM In this class, participants will visit galleries and studios, view art and watch it being made, talk with artists, and stop on the way home at cafes or coffee houses to talk about their experiences. Participants will enjoy the ideas and company of group members and make friends. That makes censorship an issue. In one hour we will touch on Project Censored, the "Fairness Doctrine", Media Consolidation, court rulings, Freedom House, The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics among other sources and then you can decide if censorship in the US today is a threat to representative government or even your health. Cracker Barrel is a lively group experience similar to a town hall meeting. New subjects are discussed weekly which prompts feedback from the class participants. All subjects are open to discussion. Each speaker uses about 10 minutes and then responses are asked for. Class meets all year round with great attendance. Estate Administration: Duties, Responsibilities & Liabilities Wednesday(s), Jun 03 ● 9:00 AM–11:00 AM A monologue is the cornerstone of playwriting. In this workshop each participant will develop a dramatic monologue of performance quality. We will write, read, and share our written work. In this workshop we will choose material from our imaginations, from history, mythology, or our own life experiences. I enjoy teaching and taught as a part-time faculty at both CSU, Chico and Butte Community College. I am currently a practicing Estate Planning and Elder Law Attorney, and have been practicing in this area for the past fifteen years. Knowledge is a powerful resource and it excites me to be able to share my knowledge and understanding of the law with others. Exploring the Visual Arts in Your Own Life Monday(s), Jun 01–Jun 22 ● 1:00 PM–3:00 PM A class for anyone, even the "I'm not creative and can't draw" people. This class is designed for thinking outside the box and to have fun as you explore what art(s) you want to pursue or learn more about. Personal help in painting, sculpture and other visual arts by class discussion, lecture, Q & A of participants. The goal is to excite you about using art in life outside the classroom via show-andtell, demo's, critiques and class discussion. This class will be as relaxed and fun as you want to make it. Specialty is Acrylics as various water media and my paintings most often resemble the oils I began with. I use wet and dry pastel, airbrush, fabric dyes; make wearable art, 3-D additive sculpture and my own stretcher bars for canvas. Substrates I use are Watercolor and Pastel paper, stretched canvas, Masonite, fabrics and furniture. I love sharing all I've learned in my extensive exploration of various visual arts and materials I've used. I've shown art and painted murals here in Chico, and was President of Chico Art Center. Fun is our class agenda. Facebook: What's It All About and Is It for Me? Tuesday(s), Jun 09–Jun 11 ● 10:00 AM–11:30 AM In two sessions, the basics of the popular Facebook social media program will be explored. Session one will be about an ordinary user/viewer, and session two will describe how to share with others via Facebook. This class is designed for folks who have never or rarely used Facebook and will demystify its appeal and usefulness. Bio(s): Marian Milling - Marian has been a Facebook user for about four years. She's "one of us:"--a senior, a grandmother, an active community member, an OLLI veteran. She's found Facebook a thing that enhances her life personally for a variety of reasons which she's eager to share with others. Diane Friedman - Diane likes to stay in touch with friends and family via social networks like Facebook. Retired software engineer, she is active in the Chico Friends of the Butte County Library. Fun with Clay Wednesday(s), Jun 03–Jun 24 ● 10:30 AM–12:00 PM Transform a ball of clay into a bowl, a sphere, or a figurine, or all, depending on your ability or choice! Class activities will include forming wet clay; finishing, carving, sanding, and burnishing; glazing; and loading the kiln for bisque firing and for glaze firing. She has been a Fine Arts Specialist/ Instructor, with Chico Unified, K-12, for the past 20 years and a classroom teacher, 3-6th, with Oroville Unified for 10 years. Clay is one of her favorite mediums and she hopes to infect you with her enthusiasm for clay and the arts! How Colors Affect You - What Science Tells Us Monday(s), Jun 01–Jun 22 ● 9:30 AM–11:30 AM Based on a Great Courses series, this class will explore some of the history of our perceptions and reactions to colors, myths about color, and research into what we know about color from scientific studies. Each lecture also offers strategies for how we use color to influence outcomes of everything from forming opinions to promoting products. Class participants will view the lectures and discuss the science presented and how personal responses mirror that science or, if not, what our alternative reactions are. While most of her adult life concentrated on a professional career path primarily in the transportation industry, her heart was always pulled toward expansion of mind and spirit beyond the business world. She is a graduate of Stanford University with a degree in American Studies and went on to complete New York University's first Publishing Workshop. Introduction to Acrylic Painting and Mixed Media: Section 1 & 2 Section 1: Wednesday(s), Jun 03–Jun 24 ● 9:30 AM–11:30 AM Section 2: Thursday(s), Jun 04–Jun 25 ● 9:30 AM–11:30 AM A hands on class using acrylic paint and mixed medias that introduces the beginner painter (and refreshes the seasoned artist) to the medium. We will look at composition, color choices, color mixing and technique in relation to choice of subject. Bio(s): Christine MacShane - Christine MacShane has been painting since that hot Australian summer day thirtyseven years ago, when her mother bought her a set of oil paints and told her to stay outside. Since then, she has endeavored to capture her response to the world around with paint and canvas. Born and raised in Australia, Christine began traveling out of high Christine began traveling out of high school. Although she holds a nursing degree, she has worked in the arts for over 20 years and now teaches acrylic painting, paints murals, faux finishes and creates commissioned works. Introduction to Conversational Spanish Tuesday(s), Jun 02–Jun 11 ● 1:00 PM–3:00 PM An intro to learning basic oral Spanish for travel or at work. Key words, phrases, pronunciation, enacting situations using Spanish. No books required. Learn while having fun. This introductory course could lead into a Fall class, once a week. Steve relocated from NY to the Bay Area about 30 years ago and moved to Chico in 2005 after meeting his wife, Miste. Miste Cliadakis - Miste Cliadakis is a financial advisor and partner at Altum Wealth Advisors in Chico. Prior to that, she was a financial advisor and vice president at Tri Counties Bank in charge of regulatory compliance for the bank’s investment program. Miste volunteers for the Salvation Army and Big Brothers Big Sisters is a board member and the treasurer of the Chico Women’s Club. Gale Ulvang - Gale Ulvang has been a knitter for most of her life. She loves to share her passion for fiber and color with others, and has a special fondness for knitting lace. She is also an experienced bodyworker, willing to share postural tips and techniques for better knitting ergonomics. A recent transplant to Chico from the Bay Area, she is eager to continue teaching and knitting with others who want to learn or expand their skills. He hopes to share his enjoying of walking and talking with others. Margaret Fashing - I was raised and educated in Paradise and graduated from CSUC with a degree in Social Work. I'm married, have three sons, three daughters-in-law and seven grandchildren. Love being a grandma! I enjoyed a 20- year career as a social worker and a supervisor for Butte County. It was fulfilling but stressful and I love retirement! I discovered OLLI three years ago and the joy of having time and energy to explore new interests, meet new people and try new activities. I also made a commitment to get healthy, and the OLLI walking class has helped me meet this goal. Macrame With Kids: Section 1 Wednesday(s), Jun 03 ● 10:30 AM–12:00 PM Macrame, the art of making jewelry out of string and knots, is a fun craft to share with young people. You remember it from the 1970's, but they think it's something new. Bring the kid in your life, be it grandkid, neice, nephew or special friend, and learn or relearn this craft together. The child should be capable to complete fine tasks with their hands, which has less to do with age and more with experience. I recommend no less than 7 years old. Susan Levine - A graduate of Chico State, Susan has enjoyed teaching in several aspects of her life for many years. While working as a library clerk for elementary schools here in Chico, she taught hundreds of kids to play cribbage. As a longtime adult volunteer in Girl Scouts, she is known for her macramé class and has been leading OLLI classes as a Peer Leader since 2010. She is married to retired local CPA, Bernie Levine. Movies at the Pageant Theater Sunday(s), Jun 07 ● 2:00 PM–6:00 PM Meet at the Pageant Theater to enjoy a movie and then discuss it together afterward over refreshments at Faith Lutheran Church. A description of all the movies we'll see will be sent by email or letter to each person enrolled in the class. Please bring half a dozen cookies or equivalent per person per movie to share. Fred Dietrich - Fred Dietrich has written several dramatic pieces that were performed at his church, as well as several short comic pieces in Pam Loyd's Ten-Minute Play class in OLLI. Fred had a featured role in the melodrama Dirty Deeds at the Depot and has facilitated the Reading Shakespeare class at OLLI the last three semesters. He is working on a political thriller about the attempted assassination of a corrupt politician.
