Abstract of Dissertation
This research is entitled “Renaissance Project between Dr.
Mohammad Emara and Dr. Mohammad A’bed Al-Jabry: A critical,
analytical study”. The researcher aims, through it, at renovating the role
of Islamic philosophy in treating renewing civilization problems and
developing the culture of the renaissance project in the field of Islamic
thought. This is to take place through comparative study till we reach a
broader project, that is crystallizing renaissance theory in contemporary
Islamic thought.
The plan of the research and its method in dividing and classification
have emanated from a basic idea that the theory of renaissance in
contemporary Islamic thought depends on four fundamental pillars or
bases: (Credential, cultural, intellectual, and social) through which the
intellectual intent of the renaissance project is formed. In the tight of this
concept the study came consisting of a prefatory introduction and four
chapters as follows:The prefatory introduction consists of four topics in the first of which
I dealt with concepts related with the renaissance project as regards:
concept, project, renaissance, civilization, then I treated the compound
concept of “project of civilized renaissance”.
In the second topic, I studied the features of the development of the
cultural life in the Arab world and its effect on renaissance projects.
In the third topic, I studied Mohammad Emara’s effect of intellectual
experience on his renaissance project.
In the fourth topic, I studied Mohammad A’bed Al-Jabry’s effect of
cultural life on his renaissance project.
I followed this with a comparative comment.
First Section is entitled “Credential Constituents of Renaissance”. It
consists of two chapters. In the first, I studied the claim denying the role
of Quranic mission in the formation of Arabic reason as regards Arab
modernists’ basics of methodological vision, secular releases claiming the
Quranic role and the Islamic attitude towards them. The second chapter
deals with the claim denying the civilized inimitability of the Quranic
mission as regards the secular outlets of the claim, Islamic attitude
towards the role of the Quran in the rise of civilization and the future
dimensions of divine Sunna jurisprudence or Fiqh. Then, there is a
structural, critical commentary about the section.

Second Section is entitled “Cultural constituents of the renaissance”.
It consists of three chapters. In the first, I studied the causes of civilized
backwardness in the Islamic as regards the concept of culture and its
relation with thought, the features of its causes in the Islamic world as
well as its extension in the social and intellectual reality in contemporary
Islamic world. In chapter two, I dealt with secular modernist attitude
towards renaissance discourse in contemporary thought as shown by
Islamists, Liberals and Marxists. In chapter three, I studied the Islamic
attitude towards renaissance discourse according to secularists and
contemporary Islamic currents. Then, I made a structural, critical
commentary about the issued dealt with in the section.
Third Section is entitled “Intellectual Constituents of Renaissance”. It
consists of two chapters. In the first, I studied the philosophy of
fundamental renovation as regards philosophy of intentions in
contemporary Arabic thought, showing the position of Emara and AlJabry in it, the philosophy of fundamental Islamic renovation, the
philosophy of secular, modernist renovation, then I made a comparative,
structural, and critical commentary between methodology of both
attitudes. The Fourth Chapter deals with the philosophy of civilized
creative modernization as regards the claim of Arabic modernity showing
the Marxist concepts and methods in the renaissance project and in
reading Islamic tradition or heritage. Then, I studied the philosophy of
Islamic modernist renovation regarding the difference between western
modernity and Islamic renovation, the philosophy of civilized creativity,
the philosophy of civilized interaction and the role of “Islamic knowledge
project” in contemporary, intellectual renaissance. The two topics of this
chapter are followed by a comparative, critical, and structural
commentary.
Fourth Section is entitled “Social Constituents of Renaissance”. It
consists of two chapters. In the first chapter, I studied the issues
concerning Islamic civil society as regards the issue of the relation of
Islam with the social system, the development of modernist attitude
towards it, its effect on renaissance project and the Islamic attitude
towards it. Besides, it dealt with the philosophy of human rights in
contemporary Arabic thought according to modernist attitude and Islamic
one, whereupon I made a comparison both attitudes opinions regarding
relevant issues. Then. I studied attitude of both trends concerning the
reflection of globalization philosophy and its applications on Muslim
communities together with making a comparison between the attitude of
both trends. In the second chapter of this section, I studied the attitude of

contemporary Arabic thought towards world change, in international
relations, philosophy of civilizations collision and its applications
regarding the concept of civilized collision doctrine in western thought
and the attitude of modernist, secular, and Islamic trends. Then, I made a
