Good Things Come in Small Packages
A laptop computer; a block of butter; your favourite paperback book; newborn baby, Violet Yoder.
What do they all have in common? All weigh less than 2lbs.
“There were many challenging months
for our little girl and indeed, for our
family,” said Mary and Ray. “We are so
incredibly thankful to all the medical
staff at Children’s Hospital who gave
attention to not only Violet’s physical
needs, but also our entire family’s
emotional needs during some very
trying days.”
Violet turns four this winter and is a
happy, healthy, well-fed little girl who
loves swimming and being a big sister to
her baby brother Isaac.
Yoder Family L-R: Ray, Violet, Mary and Isaac
Baby Violet was born in January 2006
weighing only 1lb 13oz. at just 28 weeks
old. The odds of a premature baby
surviving at a weight similar to Violet’s
are very low due to underdeveloped
organs and breathing difficulties.
Thankfully, Violet did not suffer from
any serious abnormalities at birth.
After months of relying on machines to
regulate her breathing and tubes to eat,
she seemed perfectly normal and was
finally able to go home with her parents.
Mary Yoder’s pregnancy was difficult
from the moment she found out she
was expecting. Suffering from a weak
immune system, Mary experienced a
number of infections to her kidneys,
bladder, ears, and throat. Tests also
revealed that her baby had a high
possibility of having Down syndrome.
“Without Children’s Hospital and the
equipment that ensured her heart kept
beating and her lungs kept drawing
breath, our daughter would not be with
us today,” said Mary and Ray.
The first weeks of Violet’s life were
spent in the neonatal intensive care
unit (NICU) in Children’s Hospital
being closely monitored by a team of
doctors and nurses praying she would
survive. In total, Mary and Ray spent
three months in hospital with their first
new baby.
NICU services all of Manitoba, Nunavut
and Northwestern Ontario and provides
specialized care to newborn babies.
They use incubator beds to monitor
humidity and temperature and other
equipment to monitor heart rate,
breathing, oxygen saturation and
weight to keep babies alive.
2
However, the experience was not over
for the Yoder family. Violet’s health
began to worsen over the next while.
She was barely eating, was continuously
constipated, and began vomiting up to
ten times a day.
Violet was taken back to Children’s
Hospital where she stayed for two
months. Doctors found that her
stomach muscles were not processing
food quickly enough which resulted in
her lack of hunger and vomiting when
she did eat – slowly starving herself.
A gastronomy tube was surgically
implanted, allowing precious nutrients
to remain in Violet’s system so that she
could grow and develop. The tube fed
her for six months.
Right now in Manitoba, we have
outstanding medical teams who are
committed to providing the best health
care possible to our children. We have
researchers working tirelessly in our
research division at the Manitoba
Institute of Child Health, searching
for treatments and cures to heal
sick children.
There are approximately 500 babies
admitted to the NICU at Children’s
Hospital each year, 300 of which are
premature. Gifts like yours really do
make a difference in the lives of the
children and families we see each day.
Greetings and Welcome to 2010!
A Message from the Foundation
The Foundation is looking forward to an exceptionally busy
and successful year. We kick-off our line-up of exciting events
with the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling’s BDO Classic
Canadian Open. This event showcases some of the world’s top
curlers, competing for one last time before the 2010 Olympic
Games in Vancouver. From January 20 – 24, the MTS Centre
will be the place to see your favorite “skip”, “vice”, “second”,
and “lead” in action!
The 2009 Children’s Hospital Book Market was a stunning
success – breaking all previous sales records. Celebrating its
50th anniversary in 2010, there will be events surrounding
the anniversary as the Foundation looks to raise even more
funds for pediatric research, equipment, and programs
at the Children’s Hospital and the Manitoba Institute of
Child Health.
The Children’s Miracle Radiothon is always a special time
of year, where radio listeners have the opportunity to hear
incredible stories of hope and determination. This year will
be no exception as we hold a Radiothon in Winnipeg and
Brandon on Thursday, April 29th.
Hoping for sunny skies, the 24th annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic is
set for May 30th. But rain or shine, everyone and their bears
will enjoy a fun and entertaining day of activities and learning.
Mike Weir is coming to Winnipeg in 2010! The Foundation is
very excited to present the Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for
Kids, in support of the Children’s Hospital Foundation. The
two-day fundraiser promises lots of exciting golf and crowddrawing entertainment.
The end of 2009 brought winds of change to the Foundation’s
Board of Directors. Andrew McPherson is relocating to
Edmonton, Alberta with HSBC. Andrew joined our Foundation
in 2002 and has been a pillar of support guiding the Foundation
over the years in the areas of Planned Giving and most recently
as Chair. Andrew’s extensive banking background provided
the business leadership that the Foundation needed during an
incredible time of growth. Thank you Andrew, for all you have
done for Foundation we wish you well in your new position.
We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Chair,
Cheryl Lawson. Cheryl is stepping into the position a few
months ahead of schedule, as she currently holds the position
of Vice-Chair. With her warm and generous nature, easygoing and vivacious presence, and strategic mind, Cheryl is
a natural leader and has already contributed countless hours
to the Foundation and its Board. Thank you Cheryl, and may
your term as Chair be extremely fulfilling and filled with
new experiences.
CHTM Thompson Children’s Miracle Radiothon
Broadcasting live from Thompson City
Centre Mall on September 25 and 26,
2009, the 610 CHTM Children’s Miracle
Radiothon raised $21,025 in pledges.
Despite unseasonably warm weather
in Thompson, listeners touched by the
interviews from families, patients and
the dedicated health care professionals
who work to heal, comfort and save lives
donated generously.
The Children’s Miracle Radiothon gave
listeners an opportunity to participate in the advancement of health care in their own community as a portion of the funds raised
will purchase a Triple Channel I.V. Pump for the pediatric unit at the Thompson General Hospital. With this piece of equipment,
children will not have to endure the trauma of having multiple single injections; they can get three at one time.
Violet – 2 days old
Thank you for listening to the stories of hope and inspiration from the families and medical professionals. Thank you to the staff
at 610 CHTM and the volunteers for their incredible commitment and hard work on this event and to make a difference in the
lives of children.

New Allergy & Asthma Centre
Returning home to Winnipeg, the
Thompsons were treated and educated
by world-class doctors and staff at the
Allergy & Asthma Centre.
“They helped my family and treated us
like their own,” he said, fighting back
tears. “They really became a part of
our family.”
Thompson Family L-R: Jeff, Valerie, Sophie and Sydney
Jeff and Valerie Thompson have children
with asthma and allergy issues. They
know first-hand the struggles associated
with the two medical conditions.
“It’s scary as a parent when you see
your child having difficulties breathing
or not able to eat certain foods,” said
Mr. Thompson.
While living in New York, the
Thompsons discovered their son had
severe allergies to certain foods. They
were told by doctors there that the best
allergy specialists in the world were
in the Thompsons own backyard –
in Winnipeg.
Mr. Thompson decided to give
something back so he approached
the Children’s Hospital Foundation
about updating the outdated space
where children’s allergies and asthma
were treated.
That is how Thompson Children’s
Allergy & Asthma Centre came to be.
At the grand opening on September
16, 2009, the 4,300-sq.-ft. facility
was unveiled as the first of its kind in
Canada. It provides comfortable patient
care and testing rooms, workspace for
staff, and an education centre featuring
two classrooms equipped with hightech training tools like SmartBoards.
Here, kids and their parents can actively
participate in learning about their
asthma and allergies.
A reception followed where Jeff
Thompson and other invited guests
including Flor Marcelino, MLA for
Wellington, shared personal stories of
their families’ struggles with allergies
and asthma in recognition of the centre
opening and the 100 year anniversary
of the Children’s Hospital.
On October 23, 1937 she married the
love of her life, Philippe Piché. Regrettably,
they were never able to have children on their own.
They spent 35 years of their married life in Winnipeg, but
moved back to Fannystelle in the early seventies. Very often she
worked along with her husband, who was a carpenter by trade.

everyone has in their urine. Metabolites
are small molecules produced and used
by our cells and include simple sugars,
amino acids and waste products. The
premise of the research is that organ
rejection causes changes in the amount
of these metabolites.
The centre is co-funded through the
Children’s Hospital Foundation thanks
to the major gifts of the Thompson
family, RE/MAX, Manitoba Lotteries
Employees Care by Helping Others
program, an estate gift from Yvonne
Piché and numerous other donors, as
well as funding from the Winnipeg
Regional Health Authority.
Blydt-Hansen, a physician at Children’s
Hospital and Head of Pediatric
Nephrology at the University of
Manitoba’s Faculty of Medicine,
explains that this new test could be done
on a weekly basis to detect rejection and
prevent kidney damage. “The advantage
is that if there is rejection happening, we
can pick up the changes much sooner
in the process. Then we can treat the
rejection much earlier before substantial
damage to the organ has occurred.”
Dr. Tom Blydt-Hansen and Kaden Morris
Dr. Goodbear, Asthma Allie and staff member
Yvonne Piché
(nee Poitras) was born on November
10, 1917 in St. Boniface. She spent
her childhood on her family farm in
Fannystelle, Manitoba, 30 minutes
south west of Winnipeg. She was
one of 13 children and at the age
of 14 was taken out of school to
help with cooking, sewing, and
taking care of her younger siblings.
Researcher Making Life Easier
for Kidney Transplant Patients
She enjoyed refinishing furniture and working alongside her
husband doing renovations. Otherwise she kept herself busy
cooking, baking, knitting & gardening. Later in years she made
many beautiful custom made quilts.
The Catholic Church was always a big part of her life. She took
pride in caring for her church & its grounds. She could be seen
regularly cutting grass or planting flowers in the church yard –
into her early eighties!
Yvonne spent her entire life being very frugal which enabled
her to leave a substantial legacy to the Children’s Hospital
Foundation.
The family of Yvonne Piché are happy and proud to see her
legacy continue to help children through the Children’s Allergy
& Asthma Centre.
Though you wouldn’t know it by
looking at the energetic, happy four
year old, Kaden Morris’ short life
has been anything but normal. Just
hours after his birth, he was diagnosed
with kidney disease – something his
mother, Karen, described as her worst
nightmare come true.
Life with kidney disease was a daily
struggle and it took its toll on the
toddler, he was sick a lot and his growth
and development suffered. But last year
at Children’s Hospital, Kaden received
the ultimate life-saving gift - a donated
kidney from his father, Keith. And since
then Kaden has been lucky, he’s thrived
after surgery and as his small body
hasn’t rejected the transplant. Between
10 to 20 percent of pediatric kidney
transplant recipients aren’t so fortunate
and will experience at least one rejection
episode within the first year.
Currently, detecting kidney rejection
requires a biopsy – an invasive procedure
where a needle is inserted into the
kidney to remove a piece for testing.
Biopsies are done at regular intervals
during the first year following surgery.
This procedure requires heavy sedation
and is a painful and stressful experience
for a child. “It was physically draining
for him,” explains Kaden’s father Keith,
“It takes an entire day in the hospital.
He wakes up afterwards and is irritable,
in pain and uncomfortable.”
Kaden is among 40 or so patients
from the pediatric kidney transplant
program who are being monitored
by Blydt-Hansen. The NMR research
project is still in the research stage and
the new method won’t come into effect
for a few years, but preliminary results
are promising as the test is showing
90% accuracy. From Kaden’s family’s
perspective, father Keith adds, “We are
grateful for the research. We know it will
make a lot of difference to him.”
Kaden’s doctor, Dr. Tom Blydt-Hansen,
a researcher at the Manitoba Institute
of Child Health, and his colleagues
are looking to change this. They are
developing a method that will allow
doctors to detect kidney rejection earlier
using a less invasive urine test. The
technique is called Nuclear Magnetic
Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and
uses a magnetic field to measure the
amounts of different metabolites that

Miracles “fore” Manitoba
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity comes
to Winnipeg when the annual Mike Weir
Miracle Golf Drive for Kids tees off June
7, 2010 at the St. Charles Country Club
in support of the Children’s Hospital
Foundation of Manitoba Inc.
Mike Weir was interviewed by Ethan
Burnell, an eight-year-old brain tumor
survivor and advocate for sick kids, at an
official event launch October 27, 2009
via teleconference.
“I am excited to be headed to Winnipeg
for the 2010 Mike Weir Miracle Golf
Drive for Kids and I can’t wait to meet
you, buddy,” said Mike Weir.
Ethan made everyone laugh, including
Weir when he asked how many times he
has won and how many times he has lost
in his career.
“I’ve won eight times on the PGA
Tour,” laughed Weir. “And I’ve lost, oh,
about 300.”
“In just three years this national
initiative has generated approximately
$2 million for children’s health care in
Canada. Very few national initiatives
have had this level of impact in such a
brief period of time. I know Winnipeg
and the surrounding community will
rally behind this event and prove there
is an even greater potential to change
the landscape of support for children’s
health care,” said Weir. “I am proud to be
able to participate in making a difference
in the lives of children in Manitoba next
June.”
This will be the fourth Mike Weir
Miracle Golf Drive for Kids and will be
a great opener to Winnipeg’s golf season.
The Children’s Hospital Foundation
encourages Manitobans to participate
and to help support child health care
in the province. Visit the Foundation’s
website at www.goodbear.mb.ca for
details on how to get involved.

For the fifth time in six years the world’s
top curlers will hit the ice, in support
of the Children’s Hospital Foundation,
at the MTS Centre from January 20-24,
2010 for the Capital One Grand Slam of
Curling’s BDO Classic Canadian Open.
This is the last international event prior
to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
“Not only is this an opportunity to bring
some of the world’s best men’s curlers
to Manitoba’s curling fans, it is an
opportunity for the Children’s Hospital
Foundation to remind audiences of
the importance of supporting child
health care,” said Greg Lauder, Event
Co-Chair and Board Member of the
Children’s Hospital Foundation of
Manitoba. “Together with our partners,
we are thrilled to bring world class
curling back to Winnipeg for the last
tournament before the teams curl for
gold in Vancouver.”
The competition will host 18 of the
world’s top foursomes. Curling fans
will have a chance to watch as several
2010 Olympic qualifiers from around
the globe compete, one last time,
before entering the Olympic arena in
Vancouver. Among the athletes to see
includes Canada’s Vancouver 2010
representative, Kevin Martin.
“This tournament will be an excellent
final tune-up for the world’s 2010
Olympic qualifiers,” said Jeff Stoughton,
the 2005-06 BDO Classic Canadian
Open champion. “With some very
notable Olympic teams expected to
compete, this will be an extremely
competitive affair as everyone will be
looking to assert themselves as one
of the medal favorites heading into
Vancouver.”
World-class events like these help make
a difference in the lives of more than
130,000 children who come through
the doors at the Children’s Hospital
every year. The BDO Classic Canadian
Open will help the Children’s Hospital
Foundation meet our goals of doing
all that we can to make hospital visits
better for all children.
Teams expected to take the ice at the
BDO Classic Canadian Open include
former World Champions Kevin
Martin, Glen Howard, Randy Furbey,
Wayne Middaugh, Winnipeg’s Jeff
Stoughton and Kerry Burtnyk, as well
as former Olympic gold medallist
Brad Gushue.
International qualifiers expected to
compete include, reigning World
Championship gold medallist David
Murdoch (Lockerbie, Scotland), reigning
World Championship bronze medallist
Thomas Ulsrad (Oslo, Norway) and
2006 Olympic bronze medallist John

Book Market –
A Record-breaking Year
Since 1961, the
Children’s Hospital
Book Market has
contributed greatly
to the Foundation,
but 2009 was a
record-breaker.
The longest-running fundraising event in support of the
Children’s Hospital Foundation pulled in a whopping
$329,000 with this year’s three sales, which included the
February paperback sale, the annual sale and the September
paperback sale.
Book Market Coordinator Carol Irving could not be happier
about the success of the 2009 sales.
“We are thrilled about 2009 becoming a record breaking
year,” exclaimed Irving. “Not only did we raise our largest
amount ever of $329,000, we also set a new record for each
one of our three sales. The economy was a huge factor,
everyone was looking for bargains and Children’s Hospital
Book Market is the place to come for used books in good
condition at excellent prices!”
Yum, lemonade! We appreciate all the donations made
by the children and parents who took the time to run
these stands and donate the proceeds to the Children’s
Hospital Foundation. Thank you to Sarah and Madison
Fines. Every penny helps sick kids get better.
Birthdays and loot bags,
it is amazing how many
children collect donations
for the Hospital instead
of receiving gifts at their
parties. A big bear hug
to Kaitlyn Challoner for her
generous donation.

$20,000 for the Children’s Hospital Foundation. RE/MAX is raising funds in 2009 to
purchase much need EEG equipment for Children’s Hospital.
Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the Book Market.
The volunteers are working hard to plan events surrounding
the 50th anniversary including a luncheon at St. Charles
Country Club on May 6, 2010. Stay tuned to the Foundation
website for details on upcoming 50th anniversary events.
“2010 is our 50th year and we hope to surpass our outstanding
total of 2009,” said Irving excitedly.
The funds raised in 2009 will help fund vital pediatric
research, equipment and programs at Children’s Hospital
and the Manitoba Institute of Child Health.
Anyone interested in donating used books in good condition
can drop them off at any Winnipeg Fire Hall or Dufresne

Andrea Di Ubaldo
After a brief stint in Calgary, Alberta, Andrea Di Ubaldo has returned to her hometown of
Winnipeg as the Communications Coordinator at CHF. A graduate of the Red River College
Creative Communications program, Andrea’s top-notch organizational and communications
skills are a great asset to the Foundation. In her spare time, Andrea loves to spend time with
her husband and their new puppy.
Julijana Capone
While finishing up her B.A in Communications at the University of Winnipeg, Julijana
works part-time as the Foundation’s Assistant Communications Coordinator. With an eye
for detail and a flair for graphic design, Julijana has transformed some of the Foundation’s
communications materials. In addition to school and work, Julijana is a freelance writer with
articles published in the Winnipeg Free Press and the online Uptown Magazine.
Maria Lee
A first-time resident of Winnipeg, Maria Lee joined the Foundation on December 1st as
Public Relations and Marketing Coordinator. A born and bred Edmontonian, she isn’t fazed
by the ominous stories of the Winnipeg winters, and looks forward to exploring the city.
Maria graduated from Simon Fraser University with a degree in Communications and is an
avid and passionate student of yoga.
