RICHMOND ARTISTS GUILD From our President RAG DVD Library. As you know, we record all of our demonstrations if the visiting artist agrees. We eventually make a DVD for our library and this is available for members to borrow on request. Sylvia Willis records the presentation,which are converted DVD. The last two presentations are available for borrowing to any member who wants it. Please pick it up at the monthly meeting and return to the next. If you can’t return it to the next meeting contact me or arrange for it to be there. The Mark Hobson and Andrew McDermott dvds are available, along with others. Refreshment Person. Anne-Marie has decided to step down as our refreshment person for the monthly meeting. She sets up the table, buys cookies, and boils the water for coffee/tea. We need someone to take her place, and our thanks to Anne- Marie for doing such a good job for the last nine years. Gulf of Georgia Cannery. We have a meeting this month regarding our on going display at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. Information will be available at the April meeting as to where we are going with it and what we need to do. If you have not received this from the Richmond Arts Coalition here is the brochure information and links for the ArtRich 2015 Artist Call CONTENT CONTRIBUTORS The Richmond Arts Coalition (RAC) invites submissions for ArtRich 2015, a juried exhibition for local artists to be held at the Richmond Art Gallery from July 18 to August 15, 2015. JENNIFER HEINE RITA MCARTHUR MIKE HUGHES Works will be accepted in six categories: 1. Painting – Works on paper, canvas, wood, or other 2. Drawing, 2-D Mixed Media, and Printmaking 3. 3-D Works 4. Fibre Arts 5. Photography 6. Digital Media Eligibility to enter: Artists must be 18 years or older, reside in the Lower Mainland, and be a member of RAC. (The RAC membership fee is $5.00 per calendar year.) LIFE DRAWING sessions happen every Wednesday except on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. Deadline for entry: Artists wishing to enter have until 4 pm May 29, 2015 to submit their entry form. Entry information and the entry form are available on the Richmond Arts Coalition websitewww.richmondartscoalition.com or by emailing [email protected]. APRIL MEETING will be on Wednesday. April 8th Entry Fees: $20.00 for one work; $30.00 for two works; $40.00 for three works. Please Note: entry fees are NON-refundable. Artists may submit a maximum of three works per artist (regardless of Category) for adjudication. However, only one work per artist will be selected for the exhibition. Entry forms may be sent via email but will not be processed until the appropriate fee has been received via e-transfer to RAC. MAY MEETING will be on Wednesday. Include the answer to the security question. There will be a $1.50 charge by the bank for e-transfers. Paintings will be JURIED on April 21 (Tuesday) at 10 am. Bring them to the Art Studio (formerly printmaking studio) across the hall from the Fabric room. Plan on picking them up at 12 noon. You can go shopping or read in the library while you wait. IF you can’t return for noon, paintings will be in the Fabric Arts Studio until 4pm since some us us will be painting there. You can make arrangements to have a friend drop off and collect paintings. There is no charge for jurying. There is no specific theme. Please label your painting with title, medium, price - and, of course, your name. This is needed to make a list of the paintings and to make the labels that will be used for the show. We do not have any really safe storage for paintings - I wouldn’t want mine stuck up in our closet so plan on getting them back for safety. SET-UP -bring paintings at 9 am or shortly after to the performance hall on Wednesday, May 6 for the set-up. For those who can’t make that time, please make arrangements with someone who can. There will be no commission on any paintings sold BUT you are expected to sit the show at some point, attend the closing reception “Celebration with the Artists” and bring a plate of goodies. OPENING TIMES FOR SHOW - 6-8 pm Wednesday, 11am to 8 pm Thursday, 11 am to 9pm Friday, 10 to 4:30 Saturday and 10 to 4:30 Sunday. Artists Celebration is 1:30 to 4pm Sunday, May 10 People who buy paintings may take them just after 4 and artists can take paintings at 4:30. TEAR-DOWN - Monday May 11 from 9 am to 12 noon. Paintings must be removed then (if not before). There will be advertising but we are all expected to do our best promoting this show through word of mouth, social media, phone calls etc. Let’s get a good crowd out as it benefits everyone. Painting donations for Richmond Hospital - these are much appreciated and will help to brighten the halls. See previous newsletters for donation information. Several members have made donations and the Hospital Foundation is really pleased about this. Finn Slough show—see last month’s newsletter for full information. Drop-off is April 8th from 2-7, so come early to the meeting and drop off your painting(s). Two paintings (20x24 acrylic on canvas) donated by Shirley I. Pearson to the hospital. DoorsOpen is June 6 and 7. Registration now closed. There will be individual artists with open studios so plan on getting around to see them. I suggested some artists get together to show together. We did not register for a group display as we don’t have the painting room available and we have found, anyway, that people are not interested in displays, they want to nose about actual messy studios. Thompson Community Centre MAY be planning on inviting artists to paint around there but there is nothing definite yet. GrandPrix of Art, Steveston—Advance notice. Painting day is September 19th. We will be sitting the show for the following week. More info to follow - but keep painting to be primed up! 2 RICHMOND ARTISTS GUILD NEWSLETTER April’s Guest Artist John FERRIE WWW.JOHNFERRIE.COM John Ferrie, while not giving away all of his secrets, will be showing in a painting demonstration, how he captures an image, puts it through a tumble, paints layers upon layers to create his paintings with potent effect. I have dedicated my life to being an artist. Vancouver, British Columbia has been my home since I was born. There I studied art at Emily Carr College of Art and Design, and graduated in 1988. My love of Vancouver and life on the west coast inspires me. Images flow in whimsy – sweeping brush strokes, fearless colour choices, and intrinsic detail. My medium is acrylic paint on canvas, stylized and potent, in jewel-toned expression. I endeavor to give my subjects their own voice through organic shape and mild deconstruction, evoking this ever evolving part of the world. My passion for painting drives me. Each piece is a puzzle, and as the work flows through me, the complex equation unravels. I have been fortunate enough to exhibit my work in many wonderful places including Seattle, Hong Kong, Miami, New York and San Francisco, and I’ve had more than 100 self-produced exhibitions in Vancouver. Travel has been a great influence in my work, and I have participated in Artist Residencies in Paris, Hong Kong, and New York City. Corporate collections include Robert Mondavi Winery, Intrawest, Earl’s, Sugoi, Skate Canada, Kiwanis, Umberto, The Canadian Fund, AIDS Vancouver, The Robson Street Banners, Vancouver Children’s Hospital and the Surrey Memorial Children’s Health Centre. Extensive local and national media exposure includes television interviews by Vicki Gabereau, Fanny Keefer and Urban Rush, and radio interviews with Shelagh Rogers on CBC Radio, and John McMullen on Sirius. Feature articles about my work have appeared in The National Post “The One To Watch”, Good Life Connoisseur, The Globe and Mail, and Vancouver Lifestyles. I operate my own gallery at the Main Space Building near downtown Vancouver. A new collection of my work is shown here each year in the spring, and current and past exhibits are available for viewing on my web site. A hard cover book is produced in conjunction with each collection. Please feel free to contact me for commissions, consultations, interviews and private viewings by appointment.
