Students will participate in small guided reading groups, writing projects – using the writing process and a variety of genres, journal writing, and literacy activities such as games, puzzles, and literacy folders. Students will explore and expand their knowledge in the content areas of math: algebraic thinking, place value, measurement, probability, problem solving and geometry throughout the course of the year. Students will further develop number sense in all of these areas through hands-on activities, games, online learning and real world applications. Most importantly, students will learn that math can be a blast! They will use excellent art materials with an emphasis on process, not product. They will be designing, drawing, painting, printing, carving and using clay. The atmosphere in this class is safe and based on individual expression. Focus will be on appropriate grade level expectations and creative endeavors. Class Size limit: 24 Back to Table of Contents Course Title: K – 2 Science: Adventures in Science Semester: Yearlong Day and Block: Wednesday Block 2 Grade Level Range: Kindergarten - 2nd Grade Course Description: Explore both physical and life sciences through authentic, hands-on experiences. Join others in growing a curiosity, enthusiasm, and the necessary skills for scientific inquiry! Over the course of the year, we will be rotating through a variety of engaging subjects to build knowledge and know-how. Become young geologists delving into rocks, minerals, and magnets. Later, we will investigate weather, becoming expert meteorologists! Finally, we will learn about the many different soils in Washington State that help and grow our communities. We will grow our own garden, and learn about how to keep our earth healthy and clean. Support and encouragement will also be provided for students to engage in at-home science projects to share and showcase at PARADE! Class Size limit: 24 Back to Table of Contents Course Title: 1 – 2 Project Book Club Semester: Yearlong Day and Block: Monday Block 3 Grade Level Range: 1st - 2nd Grade Course Description: Art and literacy will come together in a year-long themed adventure! Join us to build a love and appreciation for reading and the way wonderful writers celebrate our world. Through engaging, accessible short stories, novel studies, and articles, students will have hands-on opportunities to respond and show their appreciation of the themes we explore. We will dive into Readers Theater, Puppetry, Photo Story, and other artistic mediums that will incorporate literacy skills included in the Common Core Standards. Themes we will explore include: Seasons, Growing up, Remarkable People, and Amazing Creatures. Class Size limit: 24 Back to Table of Contents Course Title: 1 – 2 Music & Recorders Semester: 2nd Day and Block: Wednesday Block 3 Grade Level Range: 1st - 2nd Grade Course Description: The purpose of this class is to learn music through five concept areas: Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Form, and Timbre, and to have some beginning learning experiences with musical instruments that foster an interest in life long musical learning. We will approach learning music through movement, speaking, singing, listening, and playing. This process will include imitation, exploration, improvisation, and practice. Students will experience a variety of instruments, including beginning exposure to the recorder. Students will have more success and fun in the class if they practice at home during the Recorder Karate portion of our class. Students can purchase a recorder on their own, or use one from PARADE for the course of the class. Note: Students are welcome to take this class more than once. It changes every year based on who the students are, what knowledge they bring into the class, and preferences of the students. A higher level of challenge is available for those students who have taken the recorder portion before. Follow-up or at-home activities: Keyboarding practice 3 times a week, 5 minutes a day, using our subscription to Typing Agent or another approved keyboarding program. Northwest Native Americans/Early Settlers/Washington State History Semester: Yearlong Day and Block: Wednesday Block 4 Grade Level Range: 1st – 2nd Grade Course Description: Using the social studies curriculum, Storypath and Project Glad, students will find themselves in the story while building their literacy, comprehension, decision-making, and social studies skills. Both of these curricula are designed to integrate reading, writing, social studies, and map building. Students will be able to incorporate the basic elements of a story by establishing places and characters, then build context through activities that require decision-making, writing, and verbal argument skills. Students will learn about Northwest Native Americans, Early Settlers, and Washington State History Class Size limit: 24 Back to Table of Contents Course Title: 3 – 4 Language Arts/Math Semester: Yearlong Day and Block: Monday Blocks 1 and 2 Grade Level Range: 3rd – 4th Grade Course Description: Share the adventures of reading and writing through the worlds of fiction and non-fiction genres. This course will offer and integrated approach to learning based on the students’ interests, academic skills and abilities. Students will learn about the structure of fiction and nonfiction text through reading strategies to build critical thinking around text. They will also use that structure to develop their own writing skills while working through the writing process. Learning will take place as a whole class, in small group instruction and through various literacy activities that develop lifelong readers and writers. This class will engage students in learning about the concepts of math operations and principles using hands-on concept development and skill practice. Students will participate in a variety of math investigations to help them develop basic math understanding using mathematical tools, manipulatives, math games, and peer collaboration. Students will be able to express their mathematical understanding both in oral and written form. Parents should be using a published math curriculum with students on a daily basis at home. Homework will be in the form of math fact practice and development. Using the five themes of geography, students will learn more about our remarkable regions. The diversity of our country will be explored as we travel from coast to coast, learning about our states, physical features, natural and man-made wonders, climates and more. Students will become young cartographers as they learn map-skills and have opportunities to build cultural literacy through multi-media exposure to our nation’s treasures. Students will be given project-based learning opportunities such as Model Building, PowerPoint, and Map-making! Students will learn how to read lines, practice scenes, improvise, use body movement and facial expression to tell a story, how to project voice, and perform in front of an audience. Students will also learn sign language and apply it to a variety of songs. Class Size limit: 40 Back to Table of Contents Course Title: 1 – 4: Fit Kids Semester: Yearlong Day and Block: Monday Block 4 Grade Level Range: 1st – 4th Grade Course Description: Students will spend half of the blocking participating in an elementary fitness program that develops abilities in the areas of: balance, tumbling, dribbling, catching, throwing and other kinetic skills. From working individually to working as a team, students will develop strength and agility while having a great time. Class Size limit: 40 Back to Table of Contents Course Title: 5 - 6 Math Length of Class: Yearlong Day and Block: Tuesday Block 2 Grade Level Range: 5th - 6th Grade Course Description: This course is designed to approach math from an investigative, problem solving point of view. Students will conduct investigations of mathematical concepts using mathematical tools, manipulatives, and experimentation in collaboration with their peers. Students will be able to express their understanding of mathematical concepts and principles both orally and in writing. Topics covered could include numerical sense, money, decimals and fractions, probability and statistics, introductory algebra, and geometry concepts. Math topics will often coordinate with the Science class being taught during 1st block. All students should be using a published math curriculum at home for their main math instruction, as this is a supplementary class. This course is intended to supplement the math curriculum that students are engaging in at home. Class Size Limit: 24 Back to Table of Contents Course Title: 5 – 6 Science: Chemistry Semester: Yearlong Day and Block: Tuesday Block 1 Grade Level Range: 5th – 6th Grade Course Description: This is a course in middle school chemistry. Concepts covered include the scientific method, Introduction to Matter (Solids, Liquids & Gasses); Elements & the Periodic Table; and Energy. The focus is hands on, most in-class time is spent exploring, experimenting and presenting results of research or investigations. Students will participate in the PARADE Science Expo. Homework will be assigned weekly and graded. Textbooks and most materials will be supplied by PARADE. Class Size limit: Back to Table of Contents 24 Course Title: 5 - 6 Art Semester: 2nd Day and Block: Thursday Block 3 Grade Level Range: 5th - 6th Grade Course Description: Students will participate in Art lessons based on the Elements and Principles of Art and Design. They will use excellent art materials with an emphasis on process, not product. They will be designing, drawing, painting, adapting, reflecting and writing. The atmosphere in this class is safe and based on individual expression. Focus will be on appropriate grade level expectations and creative endeavors. Class Size limit: 24 Back to Table of Contents Course Title: 5 – 6 Drama Semester: 1st Day and Block: Thursday Block 3 Grade Level Range: 5th – 6th Grade Course Description: In this Drama/Theatre class students will learn to use their bodies and voices to convey character, setting and emotion. Theatre games, memorization, and team building exercises will be an important part of this course. Collaborative scene work will be the focus of class time with a culminating project due at the end of the semester. PARADE drama has a safe supportive class atmosphere and students with no drama experience are welcome. Students will participate in literature groups, quarterly writing projects around the themes using the writing process and a variety of genres, editing skills, journal writing, and develop independence in learning how to be responsible for homework and classroom assignments. Learning activities will be hands on, including study in the areas of the arts, innovations of the time, trades, foods, daily life, geography, and governments. Students will be asked participate actively in the creation of art projects, foods, research of topics, presentations to our class, and dramas. Students will be given short weekly assignments. Homework will vary but averages about 1/2 hour per week. Homework will reinforce concepts covered in class. Many materials will be supplied in class. Individual student projects may use materials found or purchased from home. This is a beginning class, but is open ended and project based, so it can be repeated again and again. Class Size limit: 24 Back to Table of Contents Course Title: 5 – 8 Write Your Own Action Adventure Semester: 1st Day and Block: Tuesday Block 4 Grade Level Range: 5th – 8th Grade Course Description: Explore the power and creativity of words as you write your own adventure story. This class will encourage and excite the creative writer as we explore the world of heroes and heroines. Students will develop their oral, written, and listening skills as they create their own hero, heroine, villain, and the plot that weaves them all together. By the end of the semester, students will publish their adventure story in digital and/or print format. There’s no right or wrong way to write creatively. The only thing this class requires is your imagination to write what you and no one else in the world can. Students will be asked to spend time each week writing outside of class, so please allow one hour per week for writing time. Class Size 20 Back to Table of Contents Course Title: 5 - 8 Digital Photography Semester: 2nd Day and Block: Tuesday Block 4 Grade Level Range: 5th – 8th Grade Course Description: Students in this class will explore a variety of techniques for using photography as a way to express themselves. Students will gain experience in the elements of photography as well as the modes of the camera. They will also have an opportunity to work with photo editing software, and learn about organization of photos, printing, and posting their work on the web. Most project work is done in class, however, students are encouraged to practice their new skills at home. Students are welcome to use their own family camera; class cameras will be provided, but many students gain more time on task if they bring their own camera to use. SD cards are provided. Class Size limit: 20 Back to Table of Contents Course Title: 5 – 6 Micro Worlds Semester: 1st Day and Block: Thursday Block 4 Grade Level Range: 5th – 6th Grade Course Description: In Micro Worlds, students explore magnifiers, learning that tools like lenses and microscopes can be used to extend the sense of sight to view objects in greater detail. By observing everyday objects with a variety of lenses, students will learn to use a microscope, learn the functions of all its parts, and practice proper lighting and focusing techniques. Students will prepare their own slides, view live specimens, and watch how they feed, grow, and multiply, developing a sense of microbial life and interactions among living things and between living things and their environment. If so, this course is for you. Over the semester the class will focus on group games and activities that help students get fit. Students will develop skills and techniques in running, jumping, throwing, and group decision making through the experience and challenge of cooperative and competitive games such as Ultimate Frisbee, Capture the Flag, and Slalom Blindfold Challenge. Class Size 24 Back to Table of Contents Course Title: 5 - 8 Lego Robotics Semester: 1st Day and Block: Tuesday Block 3 Grade Level Range: 5th – 8th Grade Course Description: This hands-on course will immerse you in the exciting and popular world of robotics. As you build, program, and test a variety of LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT 2 robots, you’ll create robotic solutions to problems set in real world environments. You’ll explore a variety of different robots such as; drive designs, walking robots, bumper cars, and robotic animals. This course will challenge you to think critically and work with others to solve problems. Participants will work together in design teams to build and program robots which can perform various assigned or chosen tasks. Whether you’re brand new to programming and robotics or an aspiring engineer, you’ll expand your knowledge while having an awesome time with classmates who share your interests. Class Size limit: 20 Back to Table of Contents Course Title: 5 - 8 Journalism Semester: 2 Day and Block: Tuesday Block 3 Grade Level Range: 5th – 8th Grade Course Description: In this course, students will explore the topic of journalism as it relates to newspaper and the internet, including blogging. The main focus of this class will be the development of written and oral articles that can be published in our own newspaper, The PARADE Times, which is published every four weeks, and in our local community papers. Students will take turns in various newspaper roles throughout the year, and should expect to spend time each week composing and writing. Individual writing coaching and lessons will occur throughout each class, and students will be encouraged to learn how to develop ideas and stories of their own interests. Students will be expected to follow up on writing ideas, research possible topics, and spend time writing at home in supplement to the time spent in class, with an average time at home being thirty minutes a week. Access to a computer and Microsoft Word outside of class will be helpful. Learning activities will be hands on as teams of students work together to research, prepare fact sheets, draw timelines, write short reports, and present information about 16 western Pacific Rim countries as they simulate a "race" from Japan to New Zealand. Students will be given short weekly assignments, and will create a “game board” map of the Pacific Rim. Homework will vary but averages about 1/2 hour per week. Homework will reinforce concepts covered in class. Many materials will be supplied in class. Individual student projects may use materials found or purchased from home. Why should you care about the air you breathe or the water you drink? How can your choices impact others around the planet? These are questions we will attempt to answer through our studies in the environmental science course. Students in this course will explore different aspects of the environment including air, water, land and biological resources. Students will study local and global issues and gain a deeper understanding of the complex interactions which make up and impact the environment in which they live. Students will learn about these complex interactions through labs, field experiences, current events, field trips and guest lectures. Part of the course will also entail students conducting research (on a topic of their choice) that they have identified which directly impacts their environment. We will start our exploration of the universe on the third rock from the sun – the Earth. From here, we will explore the Earth’s place in the solar system and move out from there. Students will read, write, discuss, create, and present on a different topic for each 8th week quarter. 2015/2016 themes are: Industrialization of the 1850’s, Ancient Americas, Personification in Literature, and Graphic Novels. The goal is for students to increase reading and writing fluency and end the year at grade level in both. Students will have weekly homework, approximately 45 minutes a day, and are expected to come to class prepared. Students may be asked to check books out from the library to support the learning that takes place in class. They analyze the ways that many cultural groups of Washington State have developed a vibrant lifestyle and economy. They explore how ordinary citizens have impacted the rules that we all live by. They use history, economy, geography, government and culture to deepen their understanding of our state. This course meets a high school graduation requirement. Students also explore properties of triangles, proving triangle congruence and similarity, and the Pythagorean Theorem. Students use properties of polygons to classify, find perimeter and area, and to prove theorems regarding special parallelograms. Similarity and congruence of two- and three-dimensional figures, transformational geometry, right triangle geometry and trigonometry are also covered. They will use excellent art materials with an emphasis on process not product. They will be designing, drawing, painting, printing, carving and using clay. As an advanced high school class, students will be expected use their time wisely and create a portfolio of outstanding finished projects. My goal is to expose the student to a variety of mediums and to challenge them to try new things. Homework is a big part of this for credit class. Python is a powerful but easy to learn programming language. You will learn the basics of building simple interactive applications in Python, while gaining programming skills using functions, conditionals, classes, local and global variables, input fields, and lists. Additionally, you will grow in your understanding of how programming skills can be applied to real world applications. This is a project based class. Students will complete game design projects to help them master course objectives. Why should you care about the air you breathe or the water you drink? How can your choices impact others around the planet? These are questions we will attempt to answer through our studies in the environmental science course. Students in this course will explore different aspects of the environment including air, water, land and biological resources. Students will study local and global issues and gain a deeper understanding of the complex interactions which make up and impact the environment in which they live. Students will learn about these complex interactions through labs, field experiences, current events, field trips and guest lectures. Part of the course will also entail students conducting research (on a topic of their choice) that they have identified which directly impacts their environment. Students will gain experience in the elements of photography as well as the modes of the camera. They will also have an opportunity to work with photo editing software, and learn about organization of photos, printing, and posting their work on the web. Project work will be started in class, and students will be expected to practice their new skills at home. Students are welcome to use their own family camera; class cameras will be provided, but many students gain more time on task if they bring their own camera to use. Phone cameras can be used for a portion of the class. SD cards are provided. This open-ended class will encourage students to enter the world of photography at any skill level and challenge themselves to explore their own interests to learn at their individual level. The first semester literature will come from 3500 BCE to 1750 CE and reflect the developments of Mediterranean and European cultures during the period. Second semester selections will come from the past 300 years and focus on the development of thought and society. Students will practice writing and speaking in multiple genres and for various audiences. Strong pre-college skills and creativity are emphasized.
