About the 3rd Provence Summer Workshop Following on from our highly successful prior meetings*, the 3rd Provence Summer Workshop will explore latest scientific advances in understanding of adult neurogenesis in animals as well as functional significance in humans. World leaders in the field will discuss: • Live imaging of dentate gyrus blood flow and neurogenesis in humans • Novel pro-­‐neurogenic compounds • Bidirectional regulation of stress and neurogenesis • Live 1.28ppm neurogenic signal in human cohorts and treatment studies • Depression and neurogenesis in humans • Hyperactivation of neural circuits and neurogenesis • Pattern separation and dentate gyrus function in humans Breaking News! Papers presented at this Workshop can be featured in a special issue of Frontiers in Biology. The deadline for abstract submissions is 1st May 2015 (same as Early-­‐bird special registration). The Workshop will emphasize open discussion after each presentation, in a relaxed and informal setting. There will also be ample opportunity for networking, socializing, and enjoying the magnificent environs. Note that this is a ‘boutique’ workshop and so spaces are very limited. International Guest Speakers
Scott Small MD PhD, Columbia University, New York City, USA ‘Human in vivo imaging of neurogenesis and dentate gyrus function’
Scott A. Small M.D. is the Director of the Alzheimer's Disease Research
Center at Columbia University, where he is the Boris and Rose Katz
Professor of Neurology. He is appointed in the Departments of Neurology,
Radiology, and Psychiatry. With an expertise in Alzheimer's disease and
cognitive aging, Dr. Small's research focuses on the hippocampus, a circuit
in the brain targeted by these and other disorders, notably schizophrenia.
He has pioneered the development and application of high-resolution
functional MRI techniques that can pinpoint parts of the hippocampus most
affected by aging and disease. His lab then uses this information to try to
identify causes of these disorders. Over the years, his lab has used this 'topdown' approach to isolate pathogenic mechanisms related to Alzheimer's
disease, cognitive aging, and schizophrenia. More recently, his lab has used
this insight for drug discovery and to develop novel therapeutic
interventions, some of which are currently being tested in patients.
Henriette van Praag PhD, National Institute of Health, USA To be confirmed ‘New directions for regulation of adult neurogenesis in animal models’
Henriette van Praag received her Ph.D. from Tel-Aviv University in 1992 for
her work studying opiate receptor function with Dr. Hanan Frenk. She did her
postdoctoral research with Drs. Ira Black and Cheryl Dreyfus on the role of
neurotrophins in brain injury at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School from
1992-1997. She was a staff scientist in the lab of Dr. Fred Gage at the Salk
Institute for Biological Studies from 1997-2007, where she discovered that
exercise increases adult hippocampal neurogenesis, in association with
enhanced synaptic plasticity and memory function. She also developed viral
methods to study the function and neural circuitry of new hippocampal
neurons. Research in her laboratory at National Institute on Aging (NIA) at
NIH is focused on trying to understand the cellular mechanisms underlying
effects of exercise on adult neurogenesis and memory function.

Present your research at the 3rd Provence Summer Workshop to top researchers from around the world in a friendly and casual atmosphere. Many researchers at our previous Workshops met for the first time and are now actively collaborating. All papers presented at this Workshop will be eligible to feature in a special issue of Frontiers in Biology, edited by academic Workshop organisers Miriana Maletic-­‐Savatic and Michael Valenzuela. Abstracts should be in Word format and include: title, authors, affiliations, background, methods, results and discussion. Figures and references are optional. Main text (excluding title, affiliations and references) should be no more than 250 words. Submit your abstract by email to [email protected] . Abstracts will be peer-­‐reviewed by the Workshop’s scientific committee and successful researchers will be informed by email. Original research that best fits with the Workshop’s themes will be prioritized. Registration is not required to submit an abstract, but any abstracts chosen for presentation will require the nominated author to register by July 2015 (early bird registration rate will be honored). The deadline for abstract submission is 1st May 2015. About Domaine des Escaunes and the region Domaine des Escaunes is situated on the outskirts of the small village of Sernhac, surrounded by 7 hectares of scenic vineyards, and just a short distance from the historical Roman Pont du Gard (pictured). Originally constructed between the 16th and 18th century, Domaine des Escaunes has been recently renovated in keeping with the authentic era of its origins. Each room is furnished in the traditional Provencal style and has a private bathroom. Guests can enjoy 4000 square meters of fully walled garden, 100-­‐year old trees and a large ‘king size’ swimming pool (18x8m). On the property you can still find Roman tunnels that feed the remarkable 2000-­‐year old Pont du Gard aqueduct. Within a short drive, there are the many delights for which Provence is famous: sunflower-­‐laden fields, lavender farms, Cote d’Rhone vineyards, historical ruins, charming towns, the ‘gastronomic’ Uzes Saturday markets and much more.
Workshop Registration What’s included? Accommodation All rooms at the Domaine des Escaunes have a private bathroom, TV, wireless internet (free). You can choose from: 1. Private room: one double room for your exclusive use. 2. Shared room: Domaine des Escaunes has a number of twin-­‐share, triple and family rooms that can comfortably accommodate multiple guests. As we forecast that most attendees will be traveling alone, this option is encouraged to maximize the number of individuals who can attend the Workshop. You can list names of attendees you may like to share your room with on the Registration Form. Meals Three breakfasts, one light supper, two dinners and two lunches. Transfers 1. Sernhac is approximately 25kms from Avignon, the nearest TGV rail station. We will be running one complimentary afternoon shuttle from Avignon TGV station to Domaine des Escaunes on Wednesday 16th September 2015. Please note we will not be able to pick up attendees outside this time. 2. We will return attendees to Avignon TGV at the close of the Workshop (or after the optional Uzes markets excursion for those who choose). What’s not included?
