DOROTHY ROBERTS IS JULY’S SILVER STAR AT WALDEN PLACE.

She was born Dorothy
Joslin on June 6, 1926, to
her proud parents, Sofia
and John. Dorothy was
born in Lying-In Hospital
in New York, N.Y. Around
the age of 3 she moved
and lived most of her life
in Ithaca, N.Y. She had
a brother, John Leonard,
who died young as a
result of being hit by a car.
Dorothy also has one sister
named Ruth who currently
resides in senior housing,
Ithaca, N.Y.
Dorothy Roberts, a true Silver Star
Dorothy finished high
school and went on to
business school where she
received her diploma.
She met the love of her
life, Edward Roberts, in the spring of 1949 and they were married Sept.
2, 1950. Together they have three children, Mark, Miriam (Mickey) and
Jim. She currently has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Dorothy worked 3 years as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone
and 7 years as the Danby town clerk. Dorothy also worked at Cornell
University. She was the first councilwoman on the town board in Danby
and was on the board for 8 years. Her husband worked 36-1/2 years at
the post office.
Throughout Dorothy’s life, she has been a member of several
organizations, including a member of the Rebekah Lodge for 50 years.
She is currently a member of the United Presbyterian Church and the
Dryden Senior Center.
After retiring from Cornell University, Dorothy and her husband did a
lot of traveling and sightseeing. They moved to Cortland in 2000 to be
closer to their son, Mark.
Dorothy moved to Walden Place in December 2011. She enjoys all
activities and being around people. Dorothy attends church on Sundays.
When Dorothy isn’t socializing in the community, she likes to relax to
some classical music on her BOSE radio.
Dorothy is well-known at Walden Place as our Welcome Ambassador
as she meets and greets new residents with a bright smile on her face.
Dorothy says, “People walk in as strangers and leave as friends.” Dorothy
has many friends and is loved very much at Walden Place by the staff
and residents. Dorothy, you are a blessing to know and we are grateful
for all you do.

‘50s luncheon
THIS EVENT WAS A
FAVORITE AT WALDEN.
The music, food and
atmosphere in the dining
room was so much fun. It
seemed the staff had just as
much fun as the residents.
Dressed up ‘50s-style was a
fun way to reminisce about
the days gone by. Thank you

JOYCE EVANS, our
Concierge, is our CHART
Hero of the Month.
Joyce Evans
Joyce was one of the
first employees to join
Walden Place 13 years
ago in January 2002! Joyce was born in Summer Hill, N.Y. She has also lived in
Washington state and Wisconsin. She has been back in NYS for the past 20 years.
Joyce has been with her husband for 59 years and they have two boys, one girl, five
grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a little dog, Sophie. Her husband, Don,
is a local pastor and Joyce loves doing things with their church! She also likes to go
camping, work in her yard, ride four-wheelers with her great-grandchildren and go
to their games. Joyce loves her co-workers and the residents here at Walden Place.
She believes that everyone here is great! Some fun facts about Joyce: She is 1 of 14
children in her family, she grew up on a farm in Summer Hill and she worked at
Cortland Hospital for 20 years! Joyce couldn’t believe it when she found out that
she was chosen as our CHART Hero — but Joyce has been part of Walden Place’s
backbone. She has been here through everything and has always done her job with
a smile on her face! Thank you, Joyce, for all you do — you always go above and
beyond! You’re a true CHART Hero!
Please join us for our monthly
Alzheimer’s Support Group on the
third Wednesday of each month
from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the
library. This personal and interactive
group is facilitated monthly by a
trained facilitator through the CNY
Alzheimer’s Association. Light
refreshments are served and we do
provide care for your loved one,
if needed.
Please stay tuned for our very own
Walden Place Family Support Group!
This group will be for Walden Place
families so that you can meet and
discuss challenges that you are going
through. It is a way to help one
another on a more personal level. This
group will be facilitated by our very
own Legacy Court Director, Jennifer
Page, CTRS. Please look for more
information in the month to come!
