SUMMER PROGRAMMING FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS!
NHS SUMMER COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMS
TAKING ACTION BEYOND NEEDHAM
MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY PERFORMING VALUABLE SERVICES FOR THE SELECTED NON-PROFIT
ORGANIZATIONS, AND EARN ONE COMMUNITY CLASSROOM CREDIT IN THE PROCESS.
In its fourth year, the NCE NHS Summer Community Service program sends teams of students and a faculty leader to
participate in weeklong volunteer activities in Boston and Cambridge the weeks of 7/6, 7/13, and 7/20. Each program is
approximately 6-7 hours a day, including travel time. Specific hours will be determined closer to the start date.
The faculty leader will escort the team members to the volunteer site from a designated location, using public
transportation and walking; and they will supervise the team throughout the day. The leader will also educate the
volunteers on the mission of the organization and the cause it addresses. When time allows, each volunteer team may
explore areas in and out of the city that relate to the volunteer placement.
ART OF BUILDING COMMUNITY: Creating a Neighborhood Mural
Dot Art: Little House School, Dorchester
Ages: 15 and older
Instructor: Heather Harris, NHS Counselor
Participants will support and work along side Boston elementary school students to design and execute a large-scale
mosaic piece that will become a permanent installation in Dorchester. The mosaic will reflect the rich diversity of the
Dorchester community. The Boston students are part of the summer art program called Dot Art. (The word “Dot” is a
well-known nickname for the neighborhood of Dorchester in Boston.) The mission of Dot Art is to make exemplary
visual arts education available to young children from Dorchester and the surrounding neighborhoods. To achieve its
mission, Dot Art embraces the following three goals:
1. To empower individual children by enhancing their abilities to think visually and to practice creative problemsolving techniques
2. To unite diverse groups within the Dorchester community around the processes and products of visual art
making
3. To build meaningful connections between the Dorchester community and major cultural institutions.

registering your child for this program, you agree to allow your child to travel in the van with the group.
