Michael Graves and MGA&D partner, Patrick J. Burke, will speak about how Graves’
personal healthcare tragedy focused the firm’s attention on improving healthcare
experiences by design. Mr. Graves will reveal the lessons he learned as an architect,
product designer and a patient while he was being treated in eight hospitals and four
rehab facilities. Mr. Burke will present on recent projects that range from a new
rehabilitation hospital in Omaha, to military housing for returning wounded warriors, to
a revolutionary transport chair for the acute care hospital. Each case study will
describe how thoughtful design can positively impact healing. Michael Graves
Architecture & Design puts patients first with common sense design solutions to
some of healthcare’s greatest challenges. Improving access to person-centered
health care services and products is a moral imperative that can be advanced
through thoughtful design.
CME Objectives: By the end of this session participants will be able to:
■ Identify how ethnographic research informs evidence-based design and leads to
breakthrough design solutions. ■ Describe how the application of humanistic design
principles leads to transformative healthcare experiences for patients and clinicians.
■ Discover why common sense attention to detail makes all the difference when
designing healthcare environments.
