fight and really enjoyed it!

YOUNG ENTERPRISE
"Signs of Life, Ryde School's Young Enterprise company for 2014-15 have had a successful year, continuing a good record of
achievement for companies from the school. Their business idea was to manufacture personalised signs, with an additional
emphasis on being "eco-friendly".
At the IOW area competition final on the 29 April, held at The Bargeman's Rest in Newport, the company were professional and
focussed throughout the evening. Against other Island schools, their efforts over the year were noted and commended by the
panel of judges, with three awards being won. They won the award for "Best Report", the "Dragon's Den Award", and the "big
one", the "IOW Company of the Year Award 2015".
Winning the overall competition, meant that they then went on to represent the IOW at the Hampshire and IOW County Final,
held in Southampton on the 6 May.
This event meant that the company were now competing against other winning companies, so as expected the standard was
higher. They were again poised and professional throughout the event, representing Ryde School and the IOW in a superlative
manner.
It was pleasing to see the company pick up the award for "Best Report" again, with the judges noting that their report was an
honest one which gave an account of both the ups and downs throughout the year".

As published in the calendar, exams start in Week 5 (Monday 18 May) and conclude in the week after
half-term. For Years 3 & 4, in particular, we try to keep these low key and not worry the children. An
examination timetable has now been published. The teaching staff continue to work with the syllabus
as well as support the children with revision.

5G Assembly - starts at 8.40 / 8.45 am and is over by around 9.15 am.
Social Media
Despite assembly and newsletter announcements earlier in the year, we are still getting reports of Junior School children using
inappropriate social media sites, in particular "Oovoo". This site, and others (including Facebook and Twitter), have a minimum
age requirement of 13 years specified in their terms and conditions. Even if these sites were appropriate for junior age children,
children below this age are not permitted to hold accounts, and are in breach of the terms and conditions if they do.
We strongly recommend that any children with these accounts disable or close them down (details are on the Oovoo help pages,
for example). At the very least, emailing the site's technical support with the account details will require them to close the account.
If children are using age-appropriate social media sites, as with any online service, we also recommend that parents have
access to the account (through "friending" or shared passwords) to provide accountability on its use.
As with any online activity, the children have been taught about not using anyone's real names or personal details, or putting any
photographs of themselves or other children online. This advice is still not being heeded, and the school would be grateful if this
message could be reinforced at home.
Caps
All children need a cap in school. If they do not have a school cap, they should bring a navy or black one that is as plain as
possible. Once school caps are back in stock, we ask that one is purchased.
Water Bottles
Children need a water bottle in school and to take on school trip, this is an essential piece of kit.
Jungle Book
Year 6 are currently rehearsing our production of ‘The Jungle Book’, to be set in an urban jungle / derelict waste land. We n eed
the following props to dress the stage, please could you look and home and see whether you have anything we could use.
Of course it will be returned, but due to the setting it doesn’t need to be good condition.








Rounders
Results were as follows:
U10 won 14.5 - 13
Although some more work is required, we were very pleased with the Squad’s performance. Ailsa was superb, scoring 6 of the
rounders. Millie was great fielding and can hit well. Eleanor Vis played well too and Charlotte, playing her first school
match, improved as the match progressed. Well done to the whole team.
U11 lost 8.5 - 14
Having no balls bowled did not help but we do need to focus and concentrate more. Tiya was superb, with excellent fielding and
accurate throwing, as well as hitting the ball well. We did have some players missing at athletics and this did have an effect on the
U11 team.
RIBA Young Designers Award
Last term all of the Junior School and some of Fiveways and Senior School took part in the RIBA Young Designers award. This
was a wonderful opportunity for the children to have some 'blue sky' thinking. This year the theme was a mobile shop. In DT class
we considered which type of service or product would make a good movable shop and where it may travel to and be sited. We
then developed the idea that shops could be any shape.
The design ideas and development took place in school and then went home for realisation into 3D models. We were astounded
at the effort put in by children (and parents) - thank you.
Daniel Izzard won his age category with the fantastic idea of a moveable forest to replenish oxygen levels. We also had plenty of
Runners Up and Highly Commended entries. Well done to everyone who entered.
The entries are on display in the foyers of both Junior School and Senior School- do have a look at all the hard work.

Adventure Service Challenge
This Monday, the Junior School ASC crew went on their second
mini-hike of the year. This is a our final practice before the
annual "blind drop" hike to the East Dene activity centre later in
the term. The children navigated from the Bembridge Campus
to the Culver Down viewpoint, taking photographs for their
"Nature" and "Observation" activities, and experiencing contour
lines for real in an uphill climb.

News from Mrs Davies
Another busy week has flown by with lots of ‘bread
and butter’ work going on in all the classrooms.
We welcomed lots of visitors to Fiveways last
Saturday morning and they were very impressed
with all the lovely work on display throughout the
setting. Our “Historical” Sports day races are now
being practised and the children in Year 2 all know
the parts they will be playing in our show The
Little Red Hen. All the children will need a plain
white T shirt or plain white polo shirt, together
with a pair of denim jeans, or a denim skirt for a
costume. We will provide everything else. We are
all looking forward to wearing our new uniform
next term and we will soon have pinafore dresses
and knitwear available in all the sizes, for you to
try on before you place your order.

We had a lovely gathering this week. Everyone had fun in the fresh air exploring the Foundation Stage
garden. We finished with a delicious biscuit or two, ready for a nap in the car on the way home.
