MAIN OBJECTIVES: 1. To provide expert theatre nursing with continuing responsibility for the delivery of high quality patient care in accordance with the requirements of the Care Standards Act and associated standards. 2. In the absence of the Theatre Manager, to be responsible for the day to day management of all nurses, practitioners, support workers and students within the theatre department. 3. To effectively manage the department’s resources, including staff, budgets, equipment and stock requirements. 4. To lead and promote a safe working environment in which high quality patient care is delivered within agreed standards, timeframes and costs. 5. To promote the ethos of the Hospital Management Trust and Sancta Maria Hospital. PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Clinical Practice: 1. To demonstrate clinical expertise in practice and utilise skills/knowledge. 2. To be responsible for the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of care ensuring high standards of evidence based care, using a defined model of care. 3. The leadership and supervision of the operating team on a shift to shift basis ensuring the provision of efficient and evidence based nursing care for patients in line with Sancta Maria Hospital and HMT policies, procedures and care pathways. 4. To provide continuous responsibility for theatre in support of the Theatre Manager. 5. To ensure effective communication and working relationships with all stakeholders to ensure the smooth organisation of the department and a holistic approach to patient care. 6. To maintain a safe working environment and to ensure that accurate and comprehensive records are maintained contemporaneously, using appropriate documentation. 7. To undertake written risk assessments and to contribute positively to the HMT and hospital risk management strategy. 8. To work with all members of the theatre team to ensure that optimal use of operating time and staffing is made within the resources allocated. Operational Duties: In the absence of the Theatre Manager: 1. To be responsible for the day to day effective and efficient management of all staff within the department. 2. To actively plan staff and on call rotas, annual and study leave, monitor absences in line with the departmental budget. 3. To plan any required use of bank or agency staff in line with the requirements of the departmental budget. 4. In conjunction with the Theatre Manager and Matron, to take a role in the: Recruitment and retention of staff Staff appraisal and ongoing professional development 5. To liaise with other hospital staff and departments to promote and maintain effective working relationships, ensuring high standards of care and service. 6. To investigate accidents, incidents and complaints, implementing corrective actions where necessary, in consultation with the Theatre Manager and in accordance with hospital and HMT policies and procedures. 7. To ensure staff are well informed, motivated and supportive of the HMT and hospital ethos by demonstrating an empathetic and sensitive approach to the care of patients, relatives, consultant users and colleagues. 8. To ensure the cost effective availability of supplies and equipment for the department in conjunction with the Stores/Purchasing Controller. Leadership/Professional Development: 1. To act as an appropriate and effective role model at all times. 2. To mentor and support other theatre staff, acting as a resource and motivating staff members. To prepare, teach and actively demonstrate theatre nursing, applying theory to practice and ensuring best practice is implemented. 3. To support the Theatre Manager in the daily management of the department. 4. To ensure that all staff attend and receive mandatory training, continuous professional development and appropriate training opportunities and maintain accurate records of their participation. 5. To participate in the hospital’s appraisal and development system, identifying personal objectives and a personal development plan in conjunction with the Theatre Manager. 6. To participate in clinical audit to highlight areas of excellence and to encourage change where necessary. 7. To remain professionally updated with current developments, knowledge of new procedures and working practices. 8. To be responsible for the maintenance of the custody and administration of medicines within theatre, in accordance with hospital policies, the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and the Medicines Act 1968. 9. To update and review hospital and departmental policies and procedures ensuring that they comply with the requirements of the Care Standards Act and associated national minimum care standards. 10. To act at all times in accordance with the HPC Health Professionals Council Standards and NMC Code of Practice, with reference to AFPP guidelines.
