March 2015 SKC Newsletter
Savannah Kennel Club March 2015 SKC MARCH NEWSLETTER NEXT MEETING will be on Monday, March 23rd at Barnes Restaurant. Dinner is at 6:00pm and the meeting begins at 7:00pm. Barnes Restaurant 5320 Waters Avenue Savannah, GA 31405 912-354-8745 ! A Note From the President The following is a Letter to the Editor written by Joyce Whittal, President, as a rebuttal to an article titled, A Dog's Worst Friend, written by a member of PETA that was published in the Savannah Morning News. The original article is not published here to avoid giving it more circulation.! ! Letters to the Editor In response to the allegations recently scripted in the article by Lindsay Pollard-Post who writes for PETA, she is enjoying one of the most treasured freedoms, our freedom of speech. Do I personally agree with the agenda of both PETA and HSUS, certainly not! Was her story factual and true? Anyone can google the TRUTH about these multimillion dollar machines run by millions of dollars collected from JQ Public who has been exploited and doesn't realize where their money is actually going. Don't be fooled, HSUS and PETA are essentially synonymous today. Raking in well over $335,000,000, these two groups donate a very small percentage for any animal care, less than 2%. PETA is headquartered in Virginia and you can see their kill ratio of animals taken in and euthanized is over 85%. An interesting site, https:// www.consumerfreedom.com/…/184-7-things-you-didnt-kn… details some facts about Michael Vick's Savannah Kennel Club 1 Savannah Kennel Club March 2015 relationship with HSUS and the money raised by HSUS after Katrina. Anyone can do their own research on these two groups. Just remember, before you consider any monetary donations, keep your money local and remember the Humane Society of Greater Savannah and other local, hard working groups. Research where you send your donations. There is a considerable difference between animal welfare and animal rights groups. PETA's purpose is to end your rights to own or rather be owned by a loving, companion dog.! As President of the Savannah Kennel Club, I am proud to say we have members who have purebred dogs who participate in sport of dog showing. Most of the dogs I know personally, come from reputable breeders who do the necessary, expensive health testing to be sure not to pass along hereditary issues or concerns of that particular breed. Also, many own rescue dogs from shelters, both purebred and mixed bred dogs, who have been given a loving home and more than a second chance to not only survive but thrive. But it doesn't stop there, we also encourage our members/owners to train their dogs for competing in obedience, rally, agility, dock diving, Barn Hunt, herding and the list goes on. We support and host in September, Responsible Dog Ownership day which is a free event for the Public. Our annual dog show is held at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center and this year our dates for the Coastal Low Country Dog Show Cluster are November 27, 28, 29 & 30 and we encourage the public to attend. A number of owners also have Therapy dogs who visit local hospitals, libraries and nursing homes. Our organization can hardly be included in the dismal experience as painted by the author of, “A Dog's Worst Friend”.! Respectfully submitted,! Joyce L.Whittal,! President, Savannah Kennel Club! !
