There is great energy around our school with a focus on our core business of learning. I have been privileged to view student learning and assessment across the last unit and it is always a great part of my work to hear and view student work. Congratulations East Ayr students and staff. I look forward to the next units of work and being part of student learning. Our work and focus on developing students’ reading fluency, comprehension and confidence is evident throughout the school. We are seeing some great gains in this area as a result of a full team approach to the learning. Miss Kayla Hawkins (Master Teacher) and Miss Crystal Watson (HoC) have included in this newsletter some helpful information about reading. This will be a feature of our newsletters. If you have any questions about reading our classroom teachers and our support staff are only too happy to assist. In the coming weeks we head into the Semester One Reporting period. Report Cards will be distributed early in Term 3 allowing our students the maximum time to be assessed in their learning across the 8 Key Learning Areas. Once distributed, parents are welcome to make an appointment with their child/ren’s class teacher to discuss the report card. The report cards are a document that provide information to parents about how their child/ren have performed in the curriculum areas of English, Mathematics, Science, History/Geography, Health and Physical Education, The Arts (drama, dance, visual arts, media strands)/Music, Technology and LOTE (Year 5 and 6 students only for this subject). Every day at our school is an important day for student learning and for our teachers to teach. Our attendance rate is high and the vast majority of students are attending 95% or higher. High attendance means learning is not being missed. Lessons at East Ayr commence at 8.55 a.m. so it is important students are at school before this time. The end of semester report card also includes a report on behaviour and attendance. The attendance record is generated from the electronic roll and outlines number of days absent (explained and unexplained). Please make sure that you are contacting our front office or absence line in the event that your child is away and going through front office in the event that your child is late or needs to be picked up early. Thank you in advance for your support with attendance. With the cooler weather we understand that students will be needing to wear warmer clothes. Mrs Scott and I have been very clear on our parades each week about jumpers. Jumpers with hoods may be worn, however, the hood itself is not to be worn in class or on school parades. If the jumper is taken off, students need to put this in their bag rather than tying it around their waist. We have a high standard of dress at our school and thank you for your support in maintaining these standards. Our Senior Shirts have arrived and the Year 6 students are able to wear these on Tuesday and Thursday each week as part of their uniform. I would like to thank the Year 6 teachers and students who designed the shirts – the student leaders look fantastic! Kind regards Helen McCullough Principal ABSENTEE PHONE LINE To assist with phone congestion during the day, we would like to ask parents/guardians to use our new absentee line. The phone number for student absentees is 0417 003 685. When phoning or texting it would be appreciated if you could clearly state: • your name; • your child’s name; • class; • reason for absence; and, • expected dates absent from school. CHAPPY’S CHAT with Chappy John A lesson from football … On the weekend the NQ cowboys won a great game of football. Love football or hate it, there are often lessons in life to learn by watching the game. Both sides had excellent defence – a strange statement considering there were 7 tries scored! (Both teams also had excellent attack!) After half time, the Cowboys were scored against; then again a while later; and then again also. What does one do when the opposition is obviously playing better and the blowing of the full time hooter is drawing near – give up? NEVER!! The Cowboys played with all their strength and skill, and at the end scored again to win the game! One of the commentators, himself a famous player from decades past, said the second half of this game was the BEST FOOTBALL he had seen all year! What is our lesson from this? DO NOT GIVE UP! You may feel weak, or beaten, or hopeless and time may be running out – you will certainly be beaten if you give up. But if you try your hardest right to the end … you may just perform your best even, or win or lose, you will then be a champ regardless. Walk to School Parents and primary school children are encouraged to lace up their shoes and take part in Walk Safely to School Day on Friday, 22 May. We are asking our parents and students to get up early on Walk Safely to School Day and join thousands of other Australians walking all or part of the way to school. Students are invited to join us at Coutts Park on Beach Road or at the park on the corner of Chippendale and Ross Streets to walk to school. School staff have volunteered to walk with the students from each venue. Students who walk will receive a “Walk Safely to School” sticker. We will be leaving the parks at 8.30am and walking via Lawson and Davenport Streets or down Ross Street to school. We should arrive at 8.45am just in time for the first bell. Parents are also invited to attend. We look forward to a good roll up. Interschool Sport The first carnival day is this Friday 22 May. ABSENT FROM SCHOOL (Don’t let it be Unexplained) Ph: 0417 003 685 Send a text or leave a message Drop by the office or send send a note ALL DAY - EVERY DAY! AIMING FOR 95% OR BETTER Reading At Home A recent study by Oxford University “Books Beyond Bedtime” revealed that just 10 minutes of reading with a carer can make a big difference. This report can be found on the World Book Day website. The report revealed the top 6 strategies that parents and carers can engage in at home when reading with children. 1. Make the time – Just 10 minutes each day can support your child in their reading journey. 2. Choose different types of books – Find interesting stories, poems, informative texts, recipes (just to name a few). 3. Take turns to read – children reading aloud helps to develop their fluency and expression but sometimes it is great to model the expression and ‘funny’ voices, letting them enjoy the story. 4. Talk about the book – ask lots of questions! Some sentence starters are below What will happen when…? Who will …? Why do you think … did that? How did …? Why did the author ….? 5. Pay attention to the language – don’t assume your young reader understands the words or phrases, even when they read them correctly. Check their understanding. “What does the character/author mean when they say…?” 6. Enjoy reading – reading together is a great way to promote a love of reading and learning. Keep an eye out for the Reading At Home section of our newsletter each fortnight. Each newsletter will feature a different focus on reading and ways to assist our readers to be successful at home and school. Our reading targets are Prep – Level 8 Year 1 – Level 16 Year 2 – Level 20 Year 3 – Level 24
