This Saturday 21 March is Harmony Day – a day to recognise and celebrate
Australia’s cultural diversity. In 2015, Harmony Day celebrates 15 years of
continuing to share important messages about inclusiveness and respect, and
ensuring a sense of belonging for everyone. Our student council organised a
short presentation to raise awareness about Harmony Day at our assembly
this week and I commend them for their efforts. Our school is a diverse multicultural community
and Harmony Day provides another opportunity for us all to share and live the message that
“everyone belongs”.
National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence
It is somewhat appropriate that the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence falls the

day before Harmony Day – on Friday 20 March this year. Now in its fifth year, the day is held
annually to provide an opportunity for every whole school community to 'take a stand together'
against bullying and violence. The day is an initiative of the Safe and Supportive School
Communities Working Group made up of all Australian education authorities. The day provides a
focus for our school, and all schools, to say Bullying. No Way! And also to strengthen our existing
messages that bullying and violence at school are not okay at any time.

School Council update
As an Independent Public School, our School Council is responsible for guiding and shaping the
strategic direction of our school. Recently, nominations have been sought from parents and
carers for the four available positions.
School Hours:
8.45am – 3.00pm
There are two positions to serve for a two year period on our School Council. As two nominations
were received, I can confirm and congratulate both Eleni Diakos and Michelle Sheldrake, who will
both commence their time as Belmont State School Council members from April 2015.

were received, I can confirm and congratulate both Steve Bosiljevac and Gina Dunlop, who will
both commence their time as Belmont State School Council members from April 2015.
It is wonderful to have a mix of new and returning members as parent representatives on our
School Council. There will now be no need for the planned meeting to undertake the election of
School Council members on Monday 30 March.

After School Arrangements
As a parent or carer, have you discussed with your child or children what they should do if you
were delayed or were running late one afternoon? I would encourage all parents and carers to
ensure that every child at our school knows what to do in such a situation. To assist, each
afternoon staff members are assigned to both “back gate duty” and “bus duty”, and our school

At Belmont State School, the school and P&C association support the student “Dress Code” to
promote the objectives of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 and provide a safe,
supportive and disciplined teaching and learning environment.

Our “Dress Code” has been in place at our school for many years and copies are available on
our website or from our office. In short, the “Dress Code” seeks to ensure:
• the ready identification of students and non-students at school;
• the elimination of any distraction from competition in dress and fashion at school;
• the fostering of a sense of belonging; and
• the development of mutual respect among students through minimising visible
evidence of economic or social differences.
It is truly an amazing sight to behold standing at the front of our school’s weekly assembly and
seeing all 900 students dressed in the Belmont State School uniform! I thank our students,
parents and carers for ensuring that Belmont State School presents as well as we do – clearly a
reason for our continued great reputation in our community (and beyond).
I would encourage all parents and carers, and students as appropriate, to revisit the “Dress
Code” to confirm what the uniform expectations are at our school. It is important that everyone
at our school has a shared knowledge and understanding of our policies and procedures, so at
this time the school will seek to raise the awareness of students, parents and carers, rather
than hand out punishment or consequences.
As an example, please note that the “regular” girls’ and boys’ uniforms are to be worn most
days, with “house” shirts able to be worn on days of PE lessons and sport competitions (such as
Friday sport for Years 4-6 and school carnivals like the upcoming cross country). On days that
the “regular” uniform is worn, shoes are expected to be either black leather or predominantly
black or white joggers, with the lace colour matching the shoe colour. On “sport” days where
the “house” shirt is worn, the school acknowledges that getting supportive sports shoes in black
or white can prove a challenge, and accepts that students may wear shoes with some colour on
these days.
Please also take note of the information shared from our P&C regarding the new design for our
“house” shirts – there are five designs to choose from and our students have had their
opportunity to cast their vote today! The long process of selection is nearly over and I thank
and commend all involved.
Voluntary Financial (Technology) Contribution
Letters regarding the Voluntary Financial (Technology) Contribution have been distributed
earlier this term. Payment envelopes were not provided with this letter, however if you require
one please have your child collect one from the office or advise your child’s teacher and we can
have one distributed to their class. Please note the following payment methods are accepted:

All funds raised from this year’s Voluntary Financial Contribution scheme will be
used to upgrade existing technologies and purchase new technologies to benefit and
support every student at our school to learn and achieve. In 2015, this will include:
• Expansion of the wireless network to give 100% coverage across our school,
• Maintenance and/or upgrade of existing Interactive WhiteBoards (IWBs)
and data projectors in all learning areas,
• Replacement of old and unreliable classroom desktop computers,
• Investigation and purchase of new devices that promote portability and
“anywhere, anytime” learning, such as laptop computers and tablets (with a
target ratio by year’s end of a minimum of one device for every four
students).
The suggested voluntary contribution amount is $100 per family – or $2.50 per week.
As this is a voluntary contribution, this amount is only a suggestion and may not be
affordable for all families. Parents and carers may consider a payment plan option or
an amount affordable to you.
Communication
Last week saw our school migrate to a new email system, currently being rolled out
across the entire Department of Education and Training. With any major project such
as this, challenges are experienced along the way. For our school, this has meant that
the simple task of sending and receiving emails has at times proved to not be quite as
simple as it was – and some emails may be “lost” in the internet ether. If you have sent
an email and have not received a response, please consider sending the email again or
calling the school. Please note also that the [email protected] email
address is being migrated across to the slightly simpler [email protected]
– but in the interim, either email address will work.

INTERHOUSE CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL – FRIDAY 27 MARCH
All students in years 3-6 born between 2006-2002 should have received their
information and permission form regarding the interhouse cross country. These
permission forms need to be returned to their class room teacher. It is a school
expectation that all students participate in this event. Parents and spectators are very
welcome at this event and the program for the morning is as follows;
9.15am- 9 year old (2006) boys and girls 1km
10 year old (2005) boys and girls 2km
11 year old (2004) boys and girls 3km
12 and over (2003/2002) girls and boys 3km

Music News
PROM CONCERT – WEDNESDAY 1 APRIL 7:00PM START
Our 1st Term Prom Concert will be held in our School Hall on Wednesday evening 1st April.
Who’s performing?
Concert Band - students who are currently rehearsing on Wednesday mornings;
Vivaldi Orchestra & Corelli Strings – string students in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of string lessons;
Senior Choir, BBV’s & Belmont Sapphires; & 2 fantastic surprise guest performers!
Arrival Time?
All performers arrive at the Hall at 6.30pm for tuning and organisation.
What do students wear? Performance uniforms. The performance uniform includes the performance
shirt pictured, black dress slacks (traditional long black slacks, no jeans, can be bought from shops like
Best and Less, Lowes etc.), black enclosed shoes and black socks. The performance shirt can be purchased
from the school’s uniform shop.
Please note – If you are unable to organise the uniform for this concert, please organise the uniform in
time for the end of Term 2 concert.
Parking will be available on the top oval, next to the Hall. We look forward to seeing you all on the night.
