College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Volume 16, Issue 7 April 2015 Student Activities ECONOMICS Matthew Petersen (faculty mentor Ihsuan Li) will present, “Statistical Discrimination in Racial and Gender Wage Differentian: An Analysis of Occupations in the Information Technology Sector,” at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research, April 16-18, 2015 GEOGRAPHY Brandon Bohks will present, “Brook Trout in Minnesota's Driftless Area: The Impact of Land Use and Land Cover, 1850-2010,” at the 2015 AAG meeting, Chicago, IL, April 21-25, 2015 Graduate Students, Devon Libby, Carson Smith and Johnathon Salfer (faculty mentor Phillip Larson) received a Creating a Strong and Vibrant Graduate Community Grant for their project, "Hydrologic and Geomorphic Investigation of the Minnesota River.” Lisa Miller and Christian Dobratz presented their research, “Frequency and Severity of Specific Organizational Stressors for Female Law Enforcement Officers," at the Academy of Criminal Justice Conference, Orlando, FL, March 4, 2015. Laura Fry (faculty mentor Dawn Albertson) was awarded the prestigious spring MSU Foundation Grant to support their work, “Equal, but Different: Science Communication Impact on Beliefs of Sex Differences in the Brain.” Crystal Kadlec and Kier Kienholz (faculty mentors Carlos Panahon and Shawna Petersen-Brown) will present, “The Benefits of Choice on Writing Performance Between Genders,” at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research, Cheney, WA, April 16-18, 2015. Miranda Schlangen (faculty mentors Carlos Panahon and Shawna Petersen-Brown) will present, “Effectiveness of Computer-Aided Instruction in Reading among Struggling After School Program,” at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research, Cheney, WA, April 16-18, 2015. SOCIAL WORK MSW Child Welfare Program scholars Chris Davis, Macey Deslauriers, Danielle Jones, Ben Kolling, Kelly Kjarland, David Ribar, and Program Coordinator Robin Wingo, completed Classroom 2 of the Department of Human Services Foundation Training. This training will continue in June with Classroom 3 and makes scholars immediately eligible for employment in county, state, or tribal public child welfare offices upon graduation in July. ECONOMICS Ishuan Li served as judge in the North Central Regional Junior Science And Humanities Symposium (JSHS) hosted by the Minnesota Academy of Science, Bloomington, MN, March 22-23, 2015. Cynthia Miller, Ginger Schmid and Forrest Wilkerson were invited to submit manuscripts to Germany’s leading geographical journal, Geographische Rundschau [Geographical Review] for inclusion in a special issue devoted to the Midwest. Also invited was MSU’s first visiting doctoral student scholar, Dr. Stephan Fuchs who was GEOGRAPHY Phillip Larson will deliver the Keynote Address at the 2015 Midwest Undergraduate Geography Symposium (MUGS). He will present, “A River Runs Through It: 2 College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Good News Midwest Political Science Association conference, Chicago, IL, April 16-19, 2015. in residence in the Department of Geography Fall semester 2009 while pursuing his dissertation research. Their manuscripts were subjected to peerreview, all were accepted and translated to German and published in March. GOVERNMENT Colleen Clarke and student Eli Szydlo presented, “Policing and Security in the Field of Art Related Crime,” at the Academy of Criminal Justice Conference, Orlando, FL, March 4 Kevin Filter presented his paper, “Emerging trends after 10 Years of PBIS in Minnesota,” at the International Conference for Positive Behavior Support with colleagues from the Minnesota Department of Education, Boston, MA, March 11-14. Kevin Filter presented his paper, “Staff buy-in to SWPBIS” as part of a symposium with colleagues from the University of Missouri and the University of Oregon at the International Conference for Positive Behavior Support, Boston, MA, March 11-14. Colleen Clark and Eli Szydlo Fred Slocum attended the Western Political Science Association conference in Las Vegas, NV, April 2-4, 2015, and completed a pre-conference workshop on "Latino Politics" on April 1. URBAN AND REGIONAL STUDIES Miriam Porter was honored at the, "On the Shoulders of Giants," celebration at CADA. Women who were founders of CADA were recognized for paving the path to make CADA what it is today, Mankato, March 20, 2015 Fred Slocum, and. Kevin Parsneau, presented their paper, "'Cheap Click?'
