Final Spring 2015 Continuing Education Schedule
Final Con-Ed Courses for Spring 2015
NOVEL APPROACH TO TREATING
AXILLARY WEB SYNDROME
Paul Lewis, BA, RMT, NCBTMB
5/24/15, 10-2, $90/$100 + HST, 2 CEUs - Cat A
Axillary web syndrome (AWS), also called lymphatic
cording, typically presents in the weeks after axillary
surgery for breast cancer. This painful condition is likely
angiolymphatic in origin. It restricts use of the upper
extremity and has no established treatment although
physical therapy and other approaches have been used
to variable effect. We apply therapeutic massage
techniques using Dynamic Angular Petrissage (DAP) with
the aim of quickly but gently reducing upper extremity
pain and improving range of motion. DAP is a prerequisite
for this course.
MANUAL APPROACH TO WORKING IN THE PELVIC REGION
Katerina Pek, MD (cz), RMT
5/30/15-5/31/15, 10-6, $335/$365 + HST, 7 CEUs - Cat A
This course is based on the principles of Dynamic Posture
and Spiraldynamik. It emphasizes improvement of the
function of the pelvic region – especially normalization of
the muscle tone and circulation, and uses myofascial
techniques to loosen scar tissue in the abdominal cavity. It
is an effective supportive approach for individuals who
have functional gynecological and urinary disorders.
Emphasis is put on external manual treatment of
malpositions of the coccyx and activation of the pelvic
floor musculature. In addition to manual therapy, specific
exercises for the lumbar and pelvic regions are given. To get the lower price, register by the early bird deadline.
(2-4 weeks before the course date)
Please call for the exact date.
CANCER AND CLIENT CARE: THEORY AND PRACTICE
Hanifa Menen, N.D. and Jeff Appelmann, N.D.
Introduction to an overview of the most prevalent
cancers in the general public and the common
presentations of these cancers. Therapists will learn how
to safely assess therapeutic needs of clients prior to
massage treatments, and how to manage ongoing
health concerns as clients work through possible
chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments. Indications
and contraindications for massage treatments will be
discussed. Practical portion will help teach therapists
acupressure points that are most indicated for this group
with explanation of theory behind practice.

ADVANCED CHAIR MASSAGE
USING DYNAMIC ANGULAR PETRISSAGE
Paul Lewis, BA, RMT, NCBTMB
6/7/15, 10-2, $90/$100 + HST, 2 CEUs, Cat A
Whether you are treating the corporate athlete, seniors,
pregnant women or injured clients, the skills learned here
will be invaluable. This workshop will be taught primarily
through therapist hands-on participation and demonstrations. In addition to reviewing the basics, therapists will
learn and practice advanced treatment techniques to
be more efficient and effective in treating functionally
problematic issues in selected upper body regions such
as the neck, back and shoulder girdle. Massage chairs
will be available, however if you prefer to use your own
trusty chair then please feel free to bring it along. DAP is
a prerequisite for this course. TREATING ACID REFLUX (HEARTBURN) AND MASSAGE THERAPY
Bruce McKinnon, RMT
6/14/15. 10-2, $90/$100 + HST, 2 CEUs, Cat A
This half-day course will review and treat some of the contributing factors and components of the digestive system
related to Acid Reflux (heartburn). The anatomy of the esophagus and stomach will be reviewed, with attention to the
visceral structure, muscloskeletal structure and potential neurological influences. Techniques presented will include
treatment of the neck, balancing tensions in the esophagus and releasing the diaphragm. Client self-care ideas will also
be addressed.
