April 2015 - St. Clare - Catholic Elementary School
April 2015 ST. CLARE CES Visit us @ http//sce.ycdsb.ca/ D CATHOLICTY THROUGHOUT ear Parents and Guardians, We have arrived at Holy Week travelling on our Lenten Journey through our daily prayers, school-wide celebrations, and the many acts of kindness demonstrated to others. And so we hope that on Sunday, when we celebrate the Risen Christ, we may experience the Hope and Joy that is Easter. It is fitting that the month of April is dedicated to promoting the virtue, Reverence and the character trait, Respect. Reverence helps us to honour God through worship, wonder and awe. Respect helps us to treat ourselves and others with consideration, high regard and dignity. As always, teachers will recognize individual students who have demonstrated these virtues. Please see the third page for a list of students who were bestowed March’s award for Perseverance. St. Clare School is a hub of activity, both academic pursuits and extracurricular, including sports, arts, environmental initiatives, and works of charity. We will once again this year participate in the Vow of Silence to give voice to those who have none. This year the Luke 4:18 Committee is joined by three grade six students who have initiated a campaign to raise funds for Free the Children. Sofia H., Emma C., Celina V., will be presenting to the students after the Mass on April 10 to build awareness of the many works that Free the Children is involved with in the developing world. The Luke 4:18 Committee this year consists of: Nicholas A., Julia A., Emily C., Lauren C., Jessica D., Elisabeth M., Alessia M. Joseph P., Nicholas S.,and Mary Jo V. We are grateful that so many students demonstrate a willingness to act for change. We hope that the seeds sown will bear much fruit for humanity. A word of thanks to Catholic School Council for their partnership in making improvements to our technology consistent with a 21Century learning. This year, the school has been able to acquire new lap tops, chrome books and iPads, to serve the needs of our students through the Catholic School Council funding, the school budget and the Board’s new initiatives. Students are encouraged to develop learning skills and work habits to ensure their success, and to utilize all available tools. Thank you for all your support. At year’s end, look for a full listing of Catholic School Council activities and enhancements that have been possible through your contributions. On behalf of all staff, I wish you and your families a Blessed Easter. Yours in Catholic Education, Rita Zanatta “Praise be to God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! The St. Clare Speed Stacking Team is practicing in preparation for the area level tournament to be held on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Emily Carr H.S. There will be the YCDSB Final on June13th. The Speed Stacking provides students with the opportunity to develop important physical skills such as eye-hand coordination, quick response and focus; as well as promoting self-confidence, teamwork, and a good sports ethic. Thanks to a huge team of facilitators: Mrs. Manna, Ms. Santangelo, Mrs. Vigliatore, Mrs. Genova, Mrs. Inglese and Mrs. Tanel-Logozzo, Mrs. Camerlengo, Ms. Marrone, and Mme Bruno. Good Luck Team. CLASS PLACEMENT The process of the formation of class lists for September will begin during the month of May. The first step in this process is to determine class organizations, grades one to eight, consistent with Board, Ministry and contractual guidelines. Each student will be individually discussed and placed according to what staff believes is best for the child. Our goal is to establish balanced classes to provide effective working groups which will benefit all children in each class. Teachers from both the receiving and sending grades will meet to carefully consider the following criteria: Learning styles Academic abilities Social groupings Special education needs English as a Second Language needs Behavioural needs Balance of males and females Previous placement in combined classes I am sure that you can appreciate that creating the best and most functional class groupings possible is a task which requires much thought and careful planning. Accepting parental request for specific teachers would not be in the best interest of all the children in the school, as it could restrict school staff in forming what we consider the most ideal classroom groupings and therefore the best learning environment for all students. The teachers who have been working with the students all year know them well and will make determination of placement in their best interest. Letters naming teacher preference will be returned. If you have additional information to share, you are asked to submit this in writing to the attention of the school principal by May 20, 2015 . You are cordially Invited to Celebrate our EQAO TEST Easter Mass May 25 to June 4 Friday, April 10 at 1:15 p.m. Father Peter will be the celebrant. We hope many families will join us. Good Luck to our Intermediate Girls Basketball Team. They are one of 8 teams Playing at the Board Finals At the Hoopdome,. Thursday, April 9, 2015. Go Saints Go! SAFE AND CARING SCHOOL Page 4 May 3 to 8 is Catholic Education Week. School Screening Association will be visiting St. Clare School this year on April 29, 2015, to conduct their clinic. This year, the theme is: Your child’s hearing should be screened every year Growing children are very susceptible to middle ear problems and one of the best ways to prevent hearing loss is early detection of middle ear function issues. “Were not our hearts burn- A visit to an audiologist costs upwards of $50.00 and is not covered by O.H.I.P. However, if your child is referred to a hospital clinic by your doctor, the cost is covered by O.H.I.P. ing within us while He was Luke 24:32 Your child’s hearing is not being monitored unless they are being seen by an Audiologist or and E.N.T. talking to us on the road?” A fee of $15.00 is collected to help offset the costs of bringing this clinic to our School A permission form will be sent home with your child, approximately 2 weeks before the clinic date. Please fill out the form, include $15.00 fee and return to the school prior to the clinic date. Good Hearing is essential.
