Hiawatha
Inspired by HBO documentary ‘Last Letters Home’
Performed by Griffin Theatre Company
Early Native American history and culture come
thrillingly to life in a musical adventure based on the
story of young Hiawatha. Almost 150 years before
the first English colony at Jamestown, Hiawatha made
history when he peacefully united the Five Nations
of the Iroquois Confederacy. Renowned for his
heroic work in peacemaking, Hiawatha’s legacy is an
essential lesson today. TheatreIV.org
Without politicizing, the wars in Afghanistan and
Iraq are brought front and center as actors dramatize
actual letters written by soldiers serving in the Middle
East. Drawing inspiration from the New York Times
Op-Ed article, The Things They Wrote, the criticallyacclaimed play gives a powerful portrait of the soldier
experience in our ongoing warfare.

HOW TO
Shakespeare Alive!
Based on the works of William Shakespeare
Performed by Joshua Kane
Imagine living in Shakespeare’s time: when maps had
not yet been drawn, before the dictionary was written.
It was a time of expansiveness, exploration, joy in words
and ideas. “The Bard” was the people’s playwright, and
his language spoke to them in a way students today can
hardly believe -- until now. The performance/lecture
blends fascinating facts and anecdotes to paint an
entertaining and informative view of the Elizabethan
world and mindset. JoshuaKane.com

Walk On:
The Rosa Parks Story
Goodnight Moon &
The Runaway Bunny
Performed by Mad River Theater Works
Based on the books by Margaret Wise Brown
Music and drama weave together to tell the story of
Civil Rights leader Rosa Parks -- from her childhood
in rural Alabama to her famous decision to “sit down
and be counted.” Exciting and inspirational, the
play paints a portrait of a complex woman whose
determination made all the difference in the struggle
for equality in the United States. MadRiverTheater.org
Whimsical puppetry and original music bring a
new appreciation to stories that have delighted
generations. A young rabbit goes through a bedtime
ritual of saying goodnight to everything in sight;
another bunny tells his mother he wants to run away,
beginning an imaginary game of chase. Both tales
feature soothing rhythms and dream-like imagery
that infuse a sense of peace. MermaidTheatre.ca

Let’s Go Science Show
Lily’s Crossing
Wacky Professor Smart and his comedic sidekick Dr.
Knowitall join forces for an educational, experiential
extravaganza. Professor Smart has peoples’ hair
standing on-end while he demonstrates principals
of physics. Through memorable demonstrations,
students learn about air pressure, figure out flight,
see optical illusions, are shocked by static electricity,
grasp gyroscopic properties, and get a handle on the
scientific method. LetsGoScienceShow.com
Based on the book by Patricia Reilly Giff
Performed by ArtsPower National Touring Theatre
Written and Directed by Mary Hall Surface
Designed & Performed by Kevin Reese
Inspired by the work of American artist Alexander
Calder (the inventor of the mobile), the one-man
play follows a young artist on his quest to capture
his vision of life. Challenged by his father to create
a masterpiece, the artist playfully experiments with
drawing, painting, and sculpting. Only when he
takes his shapes “off the page” does he find his way.

CREATE YOUR OWN ARTS IMMERSION DAY!
Hands-On Introduction
to the Arts
Go beyond the classroom for an interactive day
of multi-disciplinary arts education workshops.
Reward your students with a unique arts enrichment
opportunity featuring dance, music, theater, and
visual arts experiences. General education public
and private school students, homeschool groups,
scouting groups, and accelerated learning programs
are all encouraged to customize an Arts Immersion
Day at the Schauer Center OR at your school.
THE BENEFITS
The one-day intensive program will challenge students
to think big and create bigger, helping to discover their
own artistic vision or inner voice. Aside from exploring
their artistic potential, students will gain positive values
such as cooperation and self-confidence.
Studies have shown that the arts enhance student
achievement and performance in the core curriculum
areas of math, science, and reading. Arts education is
also critical in developing empathy, problem-solving,
critical thinking, and other 21st centrury work skills.
THE WORKSHOPS
The program at the Schauer Center includes four
rotated 50-minute workshops, and a 30-minute break
for lunch (lunch is not provided). Each workshop will
offer professional instruction by teaching artists, with
volunteer support as needed.
GRADE LEVELS
Recommended for students in grades K5-8; the
workshops are adjusted for grade appropriateness
and/or for achievement of specific skills or goals.
GROUP SIZE
We request a minimum of 60 participants. Smaller
groups may be possible with an adjustment in fees.
A recommended max group size is 120. Larger groups
can be accommodated with 90 days notice, pending
facility and staff availability.
PRICING
Groups of 60-79 are $11 per student. Groups of
80+ are $9 per student. Chaperones/teachers are
FREE. Fees include instruction and materials, but all
participants must bring their own bag lunch.
If you would like an Arts Immersion at your school or
an off-site location, groups of 60-79 are $14 per student
and groups of 80+ are $12 per student.
SELECT THE DATE
The proposed dates below guarantee facility and
teacher availability. You may also choose your own date
Monday-Friday while school is in session (SEPT-MAY),
pending availability, and must be reserved 90 days
in advance. Arrival time is 9:30 am. Workshops are
10:00 am to 2:15 pm, unless a change is requested.
