We also are very proud of Wicked (The Master’s Touch x

Administrator’s
Missive
Canada has a proud tradition of producing some amazing Morgan horses! Across
the country, I am always keen to see what
bloodlines are being used and how these
horses mature into valuable working partners
or producers of the next generation of Morgans or Part Morgans.
A lot of our breeders also have websites and if your site isn’t
linked on the Canadian Morgan Horse Association website,
please send me your URL. I know sometimes, URL’s are sent to
CLRC and some come to my attention, some do not. If your farm
isn’t listed, please e-mail me your URL and I will add it pronto!
Also, I do occasionally go thru the sites to make sure they
are working and if I find a site is no longer active, I will delete
it. I think it goes without saying that if you have a website, keep
it updated regularly! I think anyone searching for their special
Morgan to purchase or a stallion to breed to wants up-to-date
information, so an old, tired site is not going to bring a lot of
business to you. I am not an expert in online technology, but I
do strive to keep the CMHA site up-to-date and with your help,
we can offer potential buyers and breeders a good place to go to
when they start looking. I do receive calls and emails from potential buyers asking for help when looking for horses for sale or
stallions at stud. Help me help you by keeping your site current.
Hitting the trails with your Morgan or Part-Morgan this year?
Please consider entering your horse into the Morgan Trail High
Point award system. You can win Zone and National awards including Justin Morgan Honours when you reach 1,000 miles! There is
a lifetime fee of $25 for each horse and once paid, your horse is
entered for life. You can download forms and rules from the CMHA
website or contact me in the office and I will get you set up.
One the of the best aspects of my job is hearing from our
members: I was delighted to receive a card of thanks from Mary
Stevenson, Quebec after she received her 35-year member certificate. And I had a wonderful chat with Roland Conrad, Manitoba, on the phone, he’s been a member for 32 years now. Thanks
for staying in touch!
And we say goodbye to our editor of the past two years, Lisa Peterson. Wishing you the best in your new endeavours, you are one busy
lady! Thank you for your contributions to The Canadian Morgan.
I am very excited to head East soon and join with my friends
at the 2016 AGM/Convention in Saint John, New Brunswick. I
hope to see you there!

President’s
Message
Spring is here!
As you read through and enjoy the photos of the Award winners, remember if you
own a Morgan, there is probably an Award
system for you. If you are not already enrolled in a program, contact Nancy at the
CMHA office and she will be glad to help you out and assist in
getting your Morgan registered in a program. Remember you
do not have to show your Morgan to qualify for the Versatility
Award system.
I would like to thank Lisa Peterson for her last three years as
our Editor. We are looking forward to announcing our next editor
at the AGM.
I am looking forward to the Board meetings and the CMHA
AGM and convention being held in Saint John, NB on March
31-April 3rd. I am sure all who attend will enjoy themselves.
It will mark the beginning of another great year for the CMHA.

tures is a special treat for someone who loves their breed, and vital to the future of the Canadian Morgan that everyone makes
an effort to join at least one issue
each year to help provide advertising income. A 32-page issue is only
paying its costs if there are at least
16 pages of advertising, and it is a
constant challenge to make those pages
happen. I hope that you never feel the
pages of this magazine are beyond your
scope. The Morgan breed is one that appeals to trail riders as much as top show
exhibitors, and each of those interests
has an audience to promote your horses
to with this membership publication.
Send a foal photo in if you are so fortunate to have a young one this year. If
you have a rock-solid, trail mount that
carries children or beginning riders with
complete caution, but will never win a
ribbon in the show ring, there is a huge
demand for those horses too. You simply need to make them seen on these
pages to let their future owner, perhaps
several provinces away, know where to
find it. Call it my swan song as the editor, but I cannot emphasize enough how
much this magazine needs and deserves
your advertising support at every level.
And news isn’t news without reporters. When your Morgans have done
something worth sharing with friends,
share it with our new editor as well!
The best stories are the ones that make
us smile, and too few of them make it
to print. Keep the communication lines
open to ensure our Morgan community,
as spread out as we are geographically,
can stay in touch for all that the future
has in store.
Thanks to an unseasonably warm winter, we already have spring on our doorsteps.
Morganly yours,

Hello Canadian Youth!
I hope spring has arrived where
ever you may live and the snow is
long gone! First off I would like to
congratulate to all the youth high
point winners, provincially and nationally. Well done!
Thank you to those youth who
submitted scholarship and sportsmanship nominations. We had no
entries in the OYAS, which is a
little disappointing. Hopefully we can get some entries for 2016,
as the winner will get their trip to the CMHA convention paid for.
Our winners for 2015 are:
Angelique Lang, Regina, SK - $250 Scholarship Award and
Sportsmanship Award winner
Angelique’s stories are included in this issue, so please take
your time to read about this lovely young lady. Congratulations!
The 2016 Youth Challenge speech topic will be “Pick a famous historical Morgan horse and tell us all about them (i.e. Justin Morgan, Black Hawk, Ethan Allen, Reinzi)” It only has to
be a few minutes long and props are allowed! Have fun and be
creative with this topic!
I will be travelling to St. John, New Brunswick for the CMHA
board & annual general meetings. If there are any questions,
comments or concerns that anyone would like discussed regarding the youth programs, please let me know so that I can have
them addressed at the board meetings.
Our new CMHA Youth Chairperson will be announced after
the convention in New Brunswick, stay tuned for information
regarding your new youth leader!
Thanks,
Lisa Kavanagh
CMHAY Chair
Winning Youth Scholarship
My name is Angelique Lang. I am 19-years old, born and raised
in Regina, Saskatchewan, and have loved horses since I was a little
girl. I begged my parents for years to put me in riding lessons, and
at age eight I was finally granted my wish. I took a few western
lessons at Regina Equestrian Centre until I was referred to Ride
That Horse near Pilot Butte, Saskatchewan when I was ten. I was
extremely nervous to begin riding at a new barn; I was essentially
a beginner who had never cantered and never ridden in an English
saddle. I put my nerves aside, walked into the big barn, and was
introduced to a beautiful, bay Morgan gelding named Sunny (The
Sun Man). Sunny exhibited all the qualities that the Morgan breed
is known and loved for: he was always eager to work, took care of
all his riders, and was extremely versatile.
I continued riding at Ride That Horse under my amazing coach,
Susan Van Dusen. Throughout the years I was put upon many different Morgan mounts including but not limited to CLM Redman’s
Renegade, Chestnut Hill PT Cruiser, Chestnut Hill Royal T, and
PTF New York Pilgrim. Each and every one of these Morgan horses taught me something new, and improved my overall skill set.
As I grew up, I began to explore different styles of English riding
and began to love hunter pleasure and dressage. These two events
stuck with me, and now I am able to compete in both events with
my own gelding. But, I am getting ahead of myself!
When I was 15 I began volunteering for the Ride That Horse
lesson program. By volunteering I was able to spend more time
around the barn, handle the horses more, and help Susan teach
lessons. I owe a lot of my own riding success to volunteering,
since I strongly believe that by correcting others I became more
aware of similar mistakes I was making in the saddle. It has been
over four years since I began volunteering with the Ride That
Horse lesson program, and still to this day you can see me in the
arena with the students every Tuesday and Thursday night. I love
every part of volunteering. I love spending time with others who
love the Morgan breed as much as I do, I love helping others get
closer to reaching their own equestrian dreams, and I especially
love seeing someone’s eyes light up and a smile stretch across
their face when they see their favourite horse or have a good ride.
Volunteering has allowed me to give back to the community and
help Susan after all she has done for me.
I know I was very blessed to take riding lessons three times a
week, and spend the time that I did at the stable, but of course I
dreamed of getting my own horse. Unfortunately, every time the
subject was brought up my parents told me that I would never
own a horse. I began working at my family’s restaurant when I
was 12 and I saved every penny I could in hopes that one day I
would be able to afford my own horse. When I was 16, Susan approached me with a proposition. She was looking to sell her gelding Thistledowns Arboria Sun, a horse who I had been leasing for
a year and who took me to my first show. I begged my parents to
let me purchase him, and I will admit, there were some tears. I
could not stand the thought of someone else owning the horse I
had fallen in love with. Miraculously my parents agreed to let me
buy “Semper Fi” and loaned me the remaining amount of money
I required to purchase him. The day that I officially became Semper’s owner was one of the best days of my life. I felt as if all the
hard work I had put into my riding career had begun to pay off.
6 March/April/May 2016
Semper and I continued our show
career, mostly competing in open shows
in southern Saskatchewan. In 2012
Semper and I received three CMHA
High Point Awards: Youth Open Hunter
Please Reserve Champion, Open Dressage Champion, and Overall Youth
Open Reserve Champion. Semper and
I have received many other ribbons at
several shows and were crowned overall champions in the 2013 Saskatchewan Youth Challenge, as well as won
the riding portion in the 2015 Saskatchewan Youth Challenge. I took it upon
myself to help our youth leader, Jessie
St. John, organize the 2014 Saskatchewan Youth Challenge. I ordered separate ribbons to ensure everyone would
receive something to take home (as
there were 11 participants and only first
to eighth received the CMHA ribbons),
I organized a post challenge potluck to
celebrate the day with the competitors
and their family members, and I organized gifts to say thank you to Jessie for
being our youth leader, Barbara Tracey
for being our judge, and Susan for allowing us to use her arena.
nice person who shares her knowledge,
encourages others to keep trying, and
is there to lend a helping hand. I have
observed her on frequent occasions assisting her peers-at the mounting block,
in the stall, after a fall, even taking the
late-night chore shift at shows so other
riders can sleep. And there are countless
other examples of Angie being a good
sport and model Morgan citizen.
In my opinion, what sets Angie apart
from all others is her overwhelming
positivity and contagious enthusiasm
for the Morgan breed. With squeals of
delight, Angie produces entry forms
for upcoming shows, recommending
classes where others may have interest, in addition to her own registration.
“Nothing is impossible,” and “never say
never,” are phrases Angie uses to influence and enourage other riders who do
not have as much show experience.
On a personal level, Angie is particularly proud of her Canadian Morgan
Horse Association high point awards. In
2012, she won the Open Youth Hunter
Pleasure Reserve Champion, Dressage
Champion, and Open Youth Overall
Reserve Champion. Similarly, in 2013,
Angie won the Saskatchwan Youth
2015 Youth Scholarship and Sportsmanship Challenge. She also holds countless ribrecipient, Lngelique Lang, pictured with This- bons from open shows, promoting the

of the Association’s events.
I am in my second year of a Bachelor
of Science degree in Biology at the University of Regina. I hope to also receive a
Masters degree in Genetics in the future.
I am planning to become a genetic counselor, where I would work with families
who have children with genetic disorders, or who are at risk for having children with genetic disorders.
I decided to stay at home to complete my bachelor’s degree so that
I could continue riding and volunteering with the students. I hope
that I will be able to continue volunteering for as long as I am in
Regina, and hope to continue to plan many other Morgany events
for Saskatchewan. Being involved with the Morgan horse breed
and the Canadian Morgan Horse Association has introduced me to
some of my best friends, and has changed my life for nothing but
the best. Go team Morgan!
Thank you,
Angelique Lang
Winning Sportsmanship Letter
It is my honor to submit this letter of nomination for Angelique Lang (Angie) of Regina, Saskatchewan, as an undeniable contender for the upcoming Sportsmanship Award with the
Canadian Morgan Horse Association.
Angie is Saskatchewan’s most involved and influential youth
member. She is a hard worker and generous with her time, taking
as many opportunities as possible to not only be involved in, but
also to promote youth programs to others. Outside of her own
training time, Angie’s peers describe her as a competent rider and
Angie started riding at age eight. For the past nine years, she
has trained under Susan Van Dusen, an Equine Canada certified
competitive coach located at White City, Saskatchewan. Angie
is the proud owner of Thistledowns Arboria Sun (“Semper Fi”).
Her current goal is to show with Semper Fi at the Morgan Grand
National in 2016.
“Doing it all and doing it well” is a phrase often used to describe the Morgan breed. Justin Morgan was labelled through
the early 1800s as being sound of eye, wind and limb throughout a lifetime of two ordinary horses. Angie would argue along
with many others that present day Morgans vary little from their
mighty progenitor. Defined in her own words, Angie describes
the Morgan breed as, “always willing to work, having great
minds, and so versatile.”
The Morgan horse is a great match for Angie and can even
be described as being similar to her: beauty, heart, athleticism
and versatility, with one trait, people-loving, that arguably distinguishes the breed and Angie from all others. No one could be
more deserving of this honourable recognition than Angie.

Equine Canada Morgan of the Year
The Equine Canada 2015 Morgan
Horse of the Year is Tamrac’s Enzo (BMF
Up Beat And Smokin x GVA Captiva
Command). Owned and ridden by Emilie
Wendland of Edmonton Alberta, Emilie
can’t say enough about Enzo’s huge personality and love of the show ring.
“He has a huge presence,” said Emilie, “a very big personality and he is fun
to be around. When I am passing someone in the ring, he goes even bigger, he
just loves to show off. But he’s kind of
lazy at home!”
Emilie has been riding since she was
six years old and has worked with Enzo
since she was 15. They have been riding with trainer Barb Tracey since 2013.
Emilie came to Morgans thanks to a
job working at Tamrac Morgans when

she was 14. She had grown up around horses
as her father was in rodeo, and she worked at a
dressage and jumping barn for a truly multi-discipline upbringing. But once she began working at Tamrac, she got hooked on Morgans and
loves showing her horses.
Emilie currently owns two Morgans, Enzo
and Tamrac’s Noble Aurora (Northern Exposure
x Futurity’s Noble Lady), nicknamed “Celia.”
In 2015 she attended her second Grand National
show, where she and Enzo earned two top ten
awards in the hunter division. Her goal is to
return to Oklahoma City and come home with
some top five ribbons, but will be finishing her
university degree first.
“Oklahoma is such a big show, and a different atmosphere,” said Wendland. “People are
so involved in it. The very large classes, with
22-24 horses in each, makes it very hard to get

With the ribbons to prove she can indeed do it though, and a

Corrections
Apologies to our Youth for two errors in the January/February issue!
In the “Kode of Honor” article, photo credit should have been
given to Lindsey Parkin Photography for the photo at the top
of the article. Also, at the top paragraph of the second column,
Nicola began riding Kody when she was nine.
In the Youth article, the second photo shown above should have
been identified as Angelique Lang aboard Thistledowns Arboria
Sun, not as Kayla Joyce.
Angelique Lang and
Thistledowns Arboria Sun take a victory
lap in the walk/trot/
canter division of the
2015 Saskatchewan
Youth Challenge.

2015 CMHA
High Point Awards
The hours of training, grooming, and polishing have been worth the effort as our Morgan
owners and exhibitors receive their high point recognition for 2015 shows and events. Each
show attended can contribute to points in your zone as well as national standings, and taking
part in open shows also earns points at the zone and national level.
Congratulations to all who have dedicated themselves to the show season and getting Mor-
gans out where they can be seen by the public. If you have been attending either Morgan or
open shows, please be sure to register your Morgan in the CMHA High Point program to join
the recognition in 2016!

and then you still have 15-25 miles of
fighting your angry horse after he realizes the vet check was NOT the end of
the ride.
The next black Morgan in Jean’s career was the mare Springhill’s Justina
(Tina). Tina was really a show horse reject
that Jean took on. In fact I was with Jean
when she first tried out Tina, and even
today we laugh at the video taken that
day that shows the trainer’s
reluctance to even canter
the horse. But Jean saw
something in the mare’s
fiery sprit and through the
magic of time, patience,
and daily rides, turned the
mare around. Tina and Jean
went on to cover an amazing 5,860 miles together in
competition. Tina and Jean
were an unstoppable duo,
and proof that if “To finish is to Win,” they indeed
won many times over. Tina
and Jean had many career
highlights, including winning Reserve Champion
at the 1998 Canadian Na- Jean and Ann
tionals. At this same event ough Grey.
Tina won conditioning in her division,
was named top trail horse and was top
overall Morgan. The Canadian Morgan Horse Association recognized Tina
when the mare won the CMHA Morgan
Sweepstakes.
Over the years Jean and her mounts
have completed virtually every type of
distance ride offered, from a 25-mile
judged pleasure ride to 50-mile endurance races, or 80-mile multi-day competitive trail rides. Jean has been in the winner’s circle in every event. She explains
her approach to conditioning: “Before
starting to get our horses ready for the
season, I want to have teeth and shots
done, and make the transition from
barefoot to shoes. Also, the horses are
on a regular deworming program that utilizes fecal testing. I stand back and evaluate my horses myself, considering things
such as: Are they too fat or too thin? Do
I need to adjust their feed? I also take a
look at my own fitness. Getting ready
for the first ride depends on how much
winter riding I did. A good walk is good
conditioning and a great chance to work
on things that you might encounter on the
trail, and an opportunity to essentially
practice getting the horse to listen to you.
To me, ring work is important and I probably do not do enough of it. The conditioning program on the ACTRA (Atlantic
Canada Trail Riding Association) web
site is a good guide for conditioning. Before I go to a CTR I like to have my horses moving at eight-to-ten miles per hour
and have their pulse dropping quickly.
For a 50-mile ride, I like to do ten miles
in one hour. Hill work is great as well.
“I like to ride 3 or 4 times a week
in the summer. After I have done some
competitions, I do quite a bit of hacking,
or what I call ride-and-talk. All rides are
really training rides. Having a happy, relaxed horse on the trail is my true enjoyment. If one over-trains you can leave
your best miles at home.”
The story pauses here to acknowledge
the third member of the team – the pit
crew. In Jean’s case, her indomitable supporter has been her husband Elliott. Elliott has been by her side for every mile,
driving the trailer, helping at pit stops, observing condition of horse and rider along
the way, giving feedback, and providing
encouragement when needed most. And
at many rides, you will find Elliott volunteering his time with ride management.
Although not on horseback, Elliott has
shared every step of
the 9,000 mile journey,
and continues to be
Jean’s biggest cheerleader. The Bridges
estimate they travel
ten miles for every one
mile of competition.
Other pit crew members at various rides
have included Jean’s
daughter Ann, also her
frequent riding partner,
and friends Gary and
Bertha Harrison and
Bob Curran.
Another black Morgan mare entered the

Safire (Skye). Skye was seven-years old
at the time with no riding experience. Jean
sent Skye to a local trainer for the winter
to establish the basics. Always up for a
challenge, Jean once again used her horsemanship skills to hone the mare into a top
distance riding mount, for Skye is now a
steady and fearless ride. Skye is the mount
Jean was riding when she reached the
amazing 9,000 mile threshold on October
3, 2015, at a Jayrdn Farm ride near St. Stephen, NB. Fellow riders gathered after the
ride to recognize the reaching of this major
milestone. Typical of distance riding, the
celebration was low key, with no glamorous ribbons or trophies. Distance riders
truly do ride for the love of the horse!
Also in the barn currently is the gray
half Morgan gelding Guysborough Grey
(Magic). Purchased as a mount for Ann
Bridges, Magic arrived in the Bridges’
barn having been started in the sport by
Gwenn Dexter. At first he was somewhat
anxious in his new home, preferring to be
a bit too enthusiastic when going down the
trail and expending precious energy. Once
again the horsemanship of the Bridges’
family has turned one more equine into
a completely relaxed, fun-loving trail
mount. His ability to pick his way safely
and calmly over rough terrain is one of
his outstanding traits. Jean feels equally
at home on him, and indeed Jean and Ann
have racked up 3,080 miles aboard Magic.
Friendships made through distance riding are the friendships of shared passions –
the love of horses and the thrill of the ride.
Jean says it best, “What we enjoy about
distance riding is the people we have met
and become friends with. We have been
places we never expected to see because
of our horses. After time spent with the
horses I always feel better! I have a plaque
that says it all “Memories are made on riding days.”
Jean reflects on some special memories
along the journey,
“One of the scariest moments I have
had on a horse was out on a conditioning
ride. We had trailered to unfamiliar territory to ride with friends on some new trails.
Suddenly, the trail turned into a deep bog,
I was riding Tina, who struggled mightily
to free herself. I was off, trying to free my-
self as well. I really feared I would lose
Tina that day, but her great nature prevented her from panicking, and we eventually
were able to free her.
“One of the funniest moments was at
a trail ride in Bairdsville, NB years ago.
I was helping ride management that day.
One novice rider, who was a practical joker
himself, had ridden 20 miles just to get to
the ride. Once the official ride began, he
and his mare lost steam along the way and
decided to walk the entire trail, making
them several hours late. While waiting for
him to return to the ride base, a large turtle
appeared. Of course we had to borrow Mr.
Turtle for a few hours and present him at
the awards supper – a true turtle award!
“And a favorite memory happened
a few years ago when Skye had a clean
sweep in the Limited Distance ride at
MacDonald’s Run in New Brunswick.
Being first over the finish line and the first
horse to pulse down led to taking home the
Best Conditioned award and Vet’s Choice
honours; a feeling of satisfaction to have
done the right amount of homework.”

In Passing:
Frank Russell, of Joe Rich Valley east of Kelowna, B.C., was
a 37-year member of the Morgan Horse Club.
He and his wife Pat successfully bred and raised 45 registered Morgan horses, from their first foal in 1977 to their last
in 2014.
Frank participated in a variety of activities, showing the
horses both driving and in hand at the Armstrong Fair (Interior
Provincial Exhibition), driving in parades, putting on historic
demonstrations, and completing a relay segment of the 1992
125th centennial Ride for Canada.
Russell’s Morgans hosted combined driving events for several years, as well as holding Equine Foundation of Canada
fund-raising trail rides.
A participant in numerous trail rides with both the Interior
Morgan Horse Club and Back Country Horsemen of British Columbia, Frank’s real love was long distance, back-country horse
packing trips.
Frank is survived by his wife and daughter. Memorial donations to the Equine Foundation of Canada are appreciated:

The Trials of the 64 Hoskins Horses
This January, the Morgan and horse worlds heaved a collective sigh of relief at the news from the New York State Supreme
Court. For the past six years, 64 Morgan horses have been in what
could be described as a no-man’s land. In March of 2010, 73 Morgans were rescued by the SPCA from Eden Farm, owned by Beth
Lynne Hoskin. Also removed were 53 cats and four dogs. It was
described as the largest roundup of animals in decades.
While known for perfectly groomed and cared for horses from
ads for the breeding farm, the horses taken from the property had
overgrown hooves, injuries including hoof abscesses, manure-matted coats, manes and tails, and suffered from worm infestations.
The SPCA had been attempting to receive court permission to remove the horses since 2006. After moving to a new farm, a grant of
$10,000 was received by the SPCA of Erie County to help with the
care of these horses. And the court battles began.
In the next few months, 35 of the horses returned to Hoskins
farm. The 100 original charges of animal cruelty to Hoskins were
reduced to 74.
In 2013 she was convicted of 52 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty and sentenced to three years probation along with
a fine and community service. Hoskins response to this was to
star in her own YouTube video singing her own version of Tom
Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down,” from the North Park Theatre which
is also co-owned by her defense attorney.
In 2014 Hoskins was found guilty of five probation violations
and sentenced to 90 days in a New York jail while two trustees
were appointed to be responsible for the care of Hoskins horses
until October 2016. She served two months of the sentence and was
released on good behaviour. She was allowed to keep 35 of her
horses and be subject to regular inspection of their care. The other
33 horses alive at that time were to be sold by October 30, 2014.
Control of Hoskins farm was given to two of her horse friends
who were to arrange for the sale. The horses had been boarded at
Foxhunt Stables until they could be transferred to Skyloft Farm.
When a shipper arrived to move the horses in 2015 though, the
owner of Foxhunt Stables followed the trailer and realized the
horses were being returned to Hoskin’s farm and not the farm
of the person thought to be buying the horses. The result was
Hoskins had reunited all 64 of the remaining horses on her farm
property. On October 31, Hoskins was found in contempt of court
for not following through on the sale and was given until November to sell the required horses.
In January 2016, Judge Joseph R. Glownia changed the orders appointing control of the 29 horses to receivers was changed
to also give them permission to sell the remaining 35 animals if
costs associated with the care and fees for the horses exceeded
what the initial sale generated. Theresa Prezioso and Lucinda
Finley were appointed the task.
The receivers reported on their first farm visit in mid-January
that they were troubled by what they found, with horses that had
overgrown feet and had not done anything in a long time but
stand in a dirty stall. Their condition was evaluated as similar to
what the SPCA found on the raid in 2010.
Thanks to the progressed age of the horses, their lack of physical condition and lack of training, their value had dropped and an
expanded sale began in February 2016. Two of the horses were in
such rough shape that an appraiser recommended they be euthanized. But Prezioso and Finley took both horses under their wing
and found a foster care to rehabilitate them.
And this is where the remarkable community of the Morgan
world finally had an opportunity to step in. A Facebook campaign
was launched introducing each of the horses. With 64 horses on
the books, the receivers logged more than 150 hours each in the
task of reviewing adoption applications from the hundreds of
emails and phone calls that poured in from across the continent.
In just 35 days, the approval and relocation of all 64 horses to
caring homes was accomplished. Hoskins perhaps most well known
Morgan, the stallion Stony Hollow Ice Man, was proudly announced
to be returning to the farm of his previous trainer, Tom Johnson, who
had cared for and shown him in Ice Man’s early years.
The identity of the adoptees has been kept private to avoid
the potential for Hoskins to try and track them down, with the
decision to announce their ownership left to the new owners. Two
have been fortunate to travel to a dedicated home in Ontario!
As the month of March wears on, additional owners have been
seen introducing their new arrivals as they enjoy open pastures to
play in and the effects of daily care.
Many of these Morgans had not been registered, but thanks
to the wonders of DNA, most and hopefully all should have their
registrations achieved so that they are not lost to the Morgan
breed and can go on to fulfilling their potential. When needed, the
DNA tests can also confirm that the horse in the barn is the same
horse that is on the papers if there is any uncertainty, to allow
them to be shown or bred as the owner wishes.
Anyone who has followed the turns of this case over time will
appreciate how quickly the Morgan community made it possible to
change the fortune of these 64 horses after some ten years of neglect.

have all come down the entry ramp of the Oklahoma City World

that can create. They have learned to control that tension and
focus on the task before them.
Another thing that will distinguish our Canadian riders is that
several will be doing more than one competition at the World
Cup. The United States will have riders chosen for one 3-gaited
team and one 5-gaited team, as well as an individual rider competition. But Canada is sending seven riders to fill 12 slots, so
several of these riders will be multi-tasking by riding on both the
three and five gaited teams. All of the Morgan riders were selected to ride on the five-gaited team, and needless to say, Morgans
are not a five-gaited breed!
“When I asked why our three-gaited Morgan riders were selected for the five-gaited team,” said Davies, “the selection committee explained that they are very strong riders who they hope
will be able to pull it off.”
Robyn and Catriona are also on the Canadian three-gaited
team, and Robyn, who is the first Morgan rider to take part in the
World Cup and has been on both the 2012 and 2014 teams, was
selected as an individual five-gaited rider. This will put her on six
different horses over three days of competition.
Practice makes perfect, so the riders are making an effort to
work with five-gaited Saddlebreds within their area thanks to
trainers like Lynne Dorcas, who has a stable several hours away

and pressure,” said Davies, “but none of the girls has much fivegaited experience. Skye has ridden a five-gaited horse 12 times!”
Robyn is also the captain of the five-gaited team, as an added
honour to what a Morgan upbringing can achieve.
The riders will arrive in South Africa after a 20+ hour plane
trip on July 3, in the beginning of winter for the southern hemisphere. So it will be a comfortable 17-degrees celcius for them.
The 2012 World Cup was during the South African summer and
the heat was something nobody was prepared for.
Once there, they have their two, 20-minute practice rides to
learn their competition horses. On the third day they have team
activities for a bit of fun. The competition begins on Thursday,
July 6 and continues through Saturday, July 8 with the competition and awards banquet.
“The World Cup patterns are done similar to a dressage show,”
said Davies. “Each element (movement) receives a score from
0-10, and at the end of the pattern, the three judges announce a
numeric score so the riders know how they did. It’s much more
interesting for the audience.”
The riders for each team ride twice, and the individual riders
make two additional rides.
Like all World Cup equestrian events, the Saddle Seat World
Cup is open to all ages over 14, including adults. But since the equitation field is still dominated by our youth, each country continues to be represented by young riders, although the growing adult
equitation division at shows may see that change in coming years.
Riders must fund-raise to help pay the competition costs, and
dedicate themselves to achieving the best fitness and riding experience for their part of the competition. With our dedicated riders
showing what they are made of, it will be exciting to hear of our
Morgan youth involvement when the event is over.
Good riding to all!

While the weather threatened and barn chores were finished
early, Morgan enthusiasts in Alberta and Ontario gathered to

Not a dry eye to be seen. When fire destroyed the home of

to restore her most memorable OMHC awards. They were
presented to a surprised Laurel during the Ontario awards
