There were 25 high school teams competing. The team members are Taeler Dupre, Emmett Lee, Brevyn Foreman, and Madeline Creasman. They will represent Florida at the National FFA Nursery and Landscape CDE in Louisville, Kentucky next October. “The event was challenging and consisted of identification practicums in which students had to identify 30 ornamental plants from a 100 plant list, 15 pests/disorders out of a 70 item list, and identify 15 tools out of a 100 item list. In addition to identification, there were four other events: Landscape Plan Interpretation, Pruning, Dealing with Hazardous Situations/Safety, and Equipment Maintenance,” said Mr. Carlton. Businesses interested in advertising, please contact amanda.lavery @polk-fl.net. Literary Magazine Mrs. Lavery is accepting electronic and hard copy submissions for our new Literary Magazine. Students can submit artwork, poems, short stories and personal essays for consideration. Please must make sure each submission contains the students’ name, cell phone number and English teacher. Electronic submissions can be sent to [email protected] and hard copy submissions can be dropped off in Q-41. CFAA submissions can contact Mrs. Sasser for directions on how to submit their work. No final deadline has been set yet, as it will depend on how many submissions are received. Questions: email Mrs. Lavery. Students—Writing Center Open on Wednesdays Students—-Visit Room 40-123 (9th Grade Building) for assistance in Writing. All students can come in and receive help on papers for classes, junior and senior thesis, FSA writing, etc. Any questions, see Mrs. Desandolo; [email protected].. The Writing Center will be open every Wednesday from 2:00—3:00, except on early release days. Senior Spotlight Joseph has been accepted to USF and will major in Architecture. He was also accepted to UCF, FIU and CU in Denver. He has decided to stay in Florida and attend USF. Way to go Joseph—you make us so proud! 3/17-3/19—PERT-Juniors Art Students—Masks Students in Mr. Dragon’s ceramics classes are creating masks that can be seen all around the world. After weeks of student and advisor planning, the kindergarteners arrived at approximately 9:00 a.m. and started their educational tour at KHS of demonstrations that included a petting zoo, homemade ice cream making station, hatching chicks, clipping cattle, reptiles, aquaculture, zebus and a hay ride. “Everyone had a great time. It was an exciting opportunity for our students to be able to share the importance of agriculture with our future generations, said Mrs. Morse!” We Absolutely Love and Welcome Our New Staff Members Ms. Toi Speed was born and raised in Lakeland. She is our Title One Coordinator/Reading Interventionist. Ms. Speed graduated from Nova Southeastern with a Specialist degree in Ed Leadership. She obtained her Master’s degree and undergraduate degree from FL A&M University. She taught in Atlanta Georgia for 8 years before moving back to Florida. She is a mother of 3 boys, her oldest is in Pharmacy at FL A & M University, one in middle school and the youngest is in preschool. She enjoys working and growing her business, Toi Butter, an all-natural and Toi Speed organic hair and body care product line. She also enjoys cooking, reading, and of course shopping. Mrs. Margaret Sasser is originally from West Chester, Ohio. She received a scholarship to play volleyball at Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. There she received her bachelor’s degree in Sociology. Mrs. Sasser has joined our ESE Department. For the past four years she has been the head volleyball coach and ESE teacher at Lake Gibson. She is currently coaching 12 year olds through Southern Select Volleyball Club. She Margaret Sasser is married and has two children, Sophia, age 4 and Lomax who just turned one in December. We are so very blessed that Ms. Toi and Mrs. Sasser have joined the KHS family—Welcome!! Girls Tennis Update Congratulations to the Girls Tennis team for their victory over Teneroc High School on March 9. The top 5 for the week included: Sydney Owens, Alicia Nwajei, Reyna Castro, Aliyah Grant, Mila Cuervo. On March 7, the Track & Field Red Devils traveled to Berkeley to compete at the Berkeley Invite along with 31 other schools. With great competition, both boys and girls did awesome. “Our girls finished 1st Place and our boys finished 6th Place overall. I am so very proud of them,” said Coach Haggins. Mr. Bartuska’s Earth-Space Science classes experienced a hands-on opportunity recently while using real Surveying Equipment. The exercise was an introduction to Differential Leveling, a basic Surveying operation that acquires elevation data for plotting and creating topographic maps.
