Year 7 Information for Parents
336 Year 7s have made a “flying start” to their Junior Secondary
education. The staff have all commented on the enthusiasm and
commitment to success being demonstrated so far. They look terrific in
their uniforms and we thank you for supporting our school in this.
Another area where we need your co-operation is in regards to the
procedures for parents/ visitors who wish to have access to school
grounds.
Most families have established effective pick-up and drop-off routines,
however parents need to be aware that they may only access the
school through signing in at the front office.
In the afternoons, parents are not permitted to wait for students under
the Junior Secondary building or outside classrooms unless they have
a specific reason to do this and have signed in at the front office.
You would appreciate that we have these procedures for the good
management of the school, the security of your students and because
it is a health and safety matter.
Should parents/carers wish to communicate with teachers, they should
make initial contact either by phoning 3824 9222 or by email and then
appointments can be made.
It is also not appropriate at any time for a parent to approach anyone
else’s student regarding a behavioural issue. If there is an issue you
should contact the relevant Deputy Principal and the matter will be
dealt with appropriately.

The IBDP will be offered to our current Year 9 students as they enter
the senior school. What is the IBDP? It is a rigorous international
curriculum delivered in over 115 countries incorporating the best
elements of several national educational systems with a focus on
academic rigour, an international perspective and the interrelationship
of all knowledge. It encourages students across the world to become
active, compassionate and lifelong learners who value differences and
diversity.
What are the benefits of an IB education? The advantages afforded to
a student earning an IB Diploma are many. Since the Diploma is
internationally recognised, universities throughout the world are eager
to admit IB students into their institutions because the IB Diploma
demonstrates that a student has knowledge and ability in many
academic areas as well as the theoretical and critical understanding of
the construction of knowledge.

Last week, Mr Bancroft, Mrs Przewloka and Mrs Abraham attended the
Asia-Pacific conference and training workshops for the IBDP in
Macau. The workshops and conference form part of the training the
Administration team needs to comply with authorisation and gain the
necessary knowledge to administer the Diploma Program.
Information sessions for interested Year 9 students and their parents
will be held early in Semester 2 with applications being accepted late
Term 3 for a foundation program in Year 10, 2016.

On Thursday, March 5, the Student Leadership Team, as well as
members of our fabulous teaching staff, were invited to attend the
Zonta International Women’s Day dinner. Zonta International is an
organisation which prides itself on improving the living conditions of
women around the world by pursuing various health and education
initiatives, such as providing birthing kits, maintaining women's refuges
and providing fundraising assistance to local women's networks.
The dinner was used as an opportunity to present one of these
initiatives, the Zonta International "Young Women in Public Affairs"
Award, to recipient Erin Gow from Brisbane Bayside State College. In
previous years, Cleveland High's Olivia Hill and Emma Clinnick have
been recipients of this award.
The night was MC'd by Brisbane's talented Rupert McCall OAM, whose
poetry and storytelling provided for a fun and enjoyable evening.
Thanks to Zonta for a wonderful evening and for the tireless work you
do in supporting women in our community.

Year 9 Geography Excursion to Australia Zoo

On March 4, our Year 9 geography students and teachers visited
Australia Zoo. This is an important part of preparing for their
assessment, which requires them to create their own zoo enclosure
and information board. The students did themselves and the school
proud, having a funfilled and educational day.
Thank you teachers Mr Brennan, Ms McConnell, Mrs Dobson and Miss
Potaka for supporting the students on this excursion. We are very
excited to see the students’ final submissions for their assessment.
Cleveland High at State Beach Volleyball Titles
Eight teams of Cleveland High volleyballers competed in the State
Schools Beach Championships at Suttons Beach, Redcliffe on March
15 and 16.
Best performing teams on the day were the Senior Girls teams where
both teams contested medal playoffs. The team of Nicole Grobbelaar,
Hannah Gill, Kiah Ryding and Shannon Celliers won the Silver medal,
with the other girls’ team placing 4th overall.
The boys competitions proved ultra competitive, with not much
separating many teams. The boys’ senior team placed a creditable 6th
while the pairs team battled over the 2 days and was just edged out of
playoff contention.
The junior teams found playing on the beach in outdoor conditions a
big learning experience but had a great time, winning many sets but

not able to win the matches often enough to make the playoffs.
A big thankyou to all students for the positive way they participated and
to the team of parents that helped make the event a success for us.

Pango Village, just outside Port Vila, took a direct hit when Cyclone
Pam crossed Efate, Vanuatu on Friday 13 March. Initial reports and
photographs show that the community has been severely affected with
many roofs and shacks destroyed, trees uprooted, essential food
gardens lost and jobs in jeopardy.
Over the past 10 years, Cleveland High School has built a relationship
with Pango Village, with groups of staff and students undertaking
ambitious projects in the local schools and kindergartens. Staff and
students from our Sister School, Pango Centre School, have travelled
to Cleveland for PD and expanded education on three occasions.
We have had reports of substantial damage at our Sister School, and
the Lykuky Kindy building which our 2012 team helped to build has lost
part of the roof, fence, windows, and had some playground equipment,
toys and books ruined. A number of schools in the areas surrounding
our Sister School have had their libraries inundated with water.
Attempts to dry the books can only hope to be partially successful.
The residents of Pango have received food aid and tarps, but will need
help with the cost of more permanent repairs, etc. They will also
continue to need help with food for about 3 months until they can start
harvesting from their gardens again.
We want to show the beautiful people in our Sister School that
Cleveland High cares, so we are appealing to all school families, as
well as the wider community, to show compassion in two ways.
1) Please could you make a tax deductible donation to help rebuild the
schools, kindergartens, village infrastructure and homes of those worst
affected, as well as to provide emergency aid where needed? All
money raised will go to the relief effort in Pango and surrounding
areas. If you are able to make a donation please go to
www.beahero.org.au and click on Cyclone Pam Relief. The challenge
to our families is to donate what it would cost to buy one, two or more
bags of rice! Of course, if you are able to donate enough to help us buy
roof sheets and other building materials that would help so much.
2) Please could you start collecting books to be brought to the school
in Term 2? We have a plan to get the books to the worst affected
schools to help restore their libraries - so vital for a good education.

Raffle for Sophia Mendoza
Sophia Mendoza is a Year 10
student who is seriously ill
with cancer. Sophia’s family
need to raise significant funds
for further treatments, which
are extremely costly.
This weekend the school will be selling raffle tickets for an Easter
Raffle. The tickets will be sold at Capalaba Central Shopping Centre on
Saturday March 28 between 9am and 4pm and at Cleveland on
Sunday March 29 between 10am and 2pm.
Tickets can also be purchased at the Chaplaincy drop-in centre or front
office of the school.

Student Committee
This term the student chaplaincy committee held a hot dog sale
fundraiser for a Year 9 student who needed medical care in America.
They raised $400 for this student.
Hot Dog Sale Fundraiser – Tuesday 31 March
The committee will hold another hot dog sale on Tuesday 31st March
to support the Vanuatu Cyclone Pam Relief Appeal. Students are
asked to come along and buy a hot dog. Drinks and iceblocks will also
be available on the day. All proceeds from the day will go towards
helping out sister school and village in Pango.
Trash or Treasure
The Trash or Treasure was a great success, raising $2,600 for
Chaplaincy. A very BIG THANKYOU to all volunteers who helped out
with delivering flyers, setting up, selling and packing up on the day.
We really appreciate your continued support.
Local Chaplaincy Committee
We are still in need of additional committee members for our Local
Chaplaincy Committee. The committee meets once a month on a
Monday afternoon at 3pm. If you feel that you can support the work of
our chaplains in this way, please contact Chappy Heather on 3824

Our next Local Chaplaincy Committee meeting is this Monday 30
March at 3pm in the Chaplaincy Drop-In Centre. All are welcome.

Collect Dominos for Chaplaincy
If you shop at Woolworths, please could you collect and donate the
Dominos currently being given away at the tills. The 2016 Vanuatu
School Team will sort them into packs to give them to schools and
kindies in Vanuatu as classroom equipment.
Student Council News
Wow, term one has been crazy but fun. The representatives have been
working extremely hard. This term we ran the Easter Egg Raffle,
ANZAC Bear raffle (money raised goes to Mates4Mates), BBQ at the
Cross Country as well as Shave for Cure, Valentine Day Roses and Icy
Cups at the swimming carnival.
It has been a pleasure to work with such a dedicated group of
students.

On Wednesday March 18, students and teachers from Cleveland
District State High School had the honour of attending a questions
session held by the Hon. Malcolm Turnbull, Minister for
Communications and the Hon. Andrew Laming, Member of Parliament.

During this session, students from schools around the Redlands were
able to direct questions relevant to youth and communications to the
Minister, whose inclusivity allowed for a thoroughly enjoyable
conversation on topics such as gaming and media censorship. The
conversation was quite refreshing, as it allowed students an
unprecedented opportunity to have our thoughts shared and
considered in detail.
Overall, the afternoon was interesting and enjoyable, certainly
something that I would attend again. Many thanks to the Hon. Malcolm
Turnbull, Minister for Communications and the Hon. Andrew Laming,
Member of Parliament for taking time out of their busy calendars to
host such a fantastic afternoon.

Tax File Number Applications
Students can no longer apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) through the
school. They have to apply online at the Australian Taxation Office

website and then have their identity verified through an interview at a
participating Australia Post office.
Applying online is the fastest and most convenient way to get a TFN.

will need to complete the application form Tax File number –
application or enquiry for individuals form (NAT 1432). More

Career Information Newsletters
Each week the My High School Careers newsletter is emailed to every
student’s school email address. This newsletter contains lots of
interesting and important general career information, as well as
information about tertiary, training and employment options. If students
would like additional information about what they have read in the
newsletter they can contact one of the Guidance Officers: Lisa Thomas
(Years 10 – 12) or Damien Hepburn (Years 7 – 9). If parents are
interested in receiving the newsletter directly, please email Lisa

Opportunities for Gifted and Talented Children
If you are looking for a stimulating holiday activity for your child (aged
between 7 – 12 years) the Young Ethos Scholars one-day program
may be for you.
The Young Ethos Scholars one-day program is specifically designed to
inspire and challenge gifted and talented children to be innovative and
resourceful, and to become thoughtful leaders of the future. All
workshops will strengthen students’ capacity in one or more of the core
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics)
subjects.
All participating students will receive a Young Ethos Scholars
Certificate from this University of the Sunshine Coast endorsed
program.
The Ethos Foundation is a not-for-profit learning organisation based in
the award-winning Crystal Waters ecovillage in the sunshine coast
hinterland. The various program options will be offered on

Leukaemia Foundation World’s Greatest Shave
On Friday 13 of March we had four fantastic young students shave
their heads in support of this worthwhile cause. They were Alanah
Dunn Year 7, Blake Wallis Year 7, Lachlan Nix Year 9 and Harrison
Black Year 9. The Gold Coin Day raised $1200. We would like to thank
everyone who supported this event.
We would also like to thank Mrs Louise Dowling for being our hair
dresser and Alanah, Blake, Lachlan and Harry for volunteering to have
their heads shaved.

their peers. They can only do
this with the support and

community.
Year 7 students from
Cleveland District State High
School have been involved in
these two projects for two years now. 144 families, 363 children, across
the Redlands were able to celebrate Christmas with presents and
food. 310 students were able to commence the 2015 school year with
all the necessary stationery, lunch boxes and school bags.
Thank you again to all those Year 7 students who have given back and
donated to the community over the past two years.
3D Printing Arrives!
Earlier this term the Industrial Technology Department took delivery
of a 3D printer. It is now set up in G5 and graphics classes are
currently creating physical prototypes of their designs.
In due course we will be able to have our Graphics and Technology
Studies students being involved in the full rapid prototyping design
process. A student will be able to start with a hand drawn concept
sketch, move to a 3D CAD model and then test out the idea with a
physical, scaled 3D printed plastic model – exciting times!

Debating
The 2015 Queensland Debating Union Secondary School Competition
has commenced and Cleveland is off to a strong start.

Our Year 9 team began the season by taking the negative side of the
topic, ‘That we should end the Melbourne Cup’ against Iona College.
Although they were narrowly defeated, the team gained valuable
experience and are gearing up for their next debate. The following
week saw Years 10 and 12 debate against Mansfield State High
School and Music Industry College respectively. Both teams were on
the affirmative side, with the Year 10 team arguing, ‘That we regret the
popularity of slum tourism’, while the Year 12 team debated, ‘That we
should ban school leavers from travelling overseas for "Schoolies"
celebrations’. Congratulations to both teams who skilfully defeated their
opponents. Finally, the Year 8/7 team had the difficult task of going up
against San Sisto College to take the affirmative side of the topic, ‘That
we should ban toys designed for (and marketed to) only one gender’.
The students were very nervous as it was their first debate ever. The
hard work that they put into preparing their arguments paid off as they
argued their way to victory!
Congratulations to our teams and coaches for their hard work. We wish
you the best of luck for round two of the competition.
The English Speaking Union Public Speaking
Competition
Students in Years 11 and 12 have the opportunity to enter a public
speaking competition where they can compete against other students
for the chance to win up to $250! The English Speaking Union Public
Speaking Competition requires students to speak on a topic of their
choice that must be related to a broad theme connected to the
association’s philosophy. The topic for the Senior Competition for
Years 11-12 students is Whose language shapes our world? Heats will
be held at 5:30pm on Monday May 4 at ESU House, Milton. Students
wishing to learn more about the competition should go to
www.esu.org.au or see Miss Elwell in the B Block staffroom. Entries
close Friday April 24.
Primary School Speaking Day
On Monday March 16, students from Ormiston State School, Mount
Cotton State School, Thornlands State School and BayView State
School participated in the Primary School Public Speaking Day.
Students learned how to use persuasive devices, elements of public
speaking and how to structure a persuasive speech. They then had
just over an hour to write and rehearse a persuasive speech. Although
this was a difficult task, the students eagerly rose to the challenge, with

some even working hard at lunch time to complete their speeches.
With topics ranging from passionate pleas against pollution to why
theme parks are more dangerous than you might think, judges Sandra
Dennis, Head of English Department and school captain Alexandra
Tabrett had the hard task of choosing three winners. Congratulations to
Annaliese from BayView, Charlize from Mount Cotton and Laila from
Ormiston, whose speeches impressed the judges. All students spoke
well and are to be commended on their speech writing skills.
Creative Generation 2015

Over the past 10 years, Creative Generation – State Schools Onstage
(CGEN) has given students, teachers and school communities the
opportunity to be involved in a large-scale, award-winning event. Since
its inception, the show has grown from 550 students in 2005 to a cast
of over 1800 and is nationally renowned for its outstanding and vibrant
display of state school talent.
Recently Cleveland District State High School students have been
involved in dance, vocal and instrumental auditions and castings for
the 2015 show. Student performers will come together to rehearse
items covering a mix of musical genres such as classical, rock, pop,
musical theatre, hip hop and jazz. This year’s show will again feature
the James Morrison Creative Generation Big Band and collaborate with
the Queensland Ballet. On the weekend some of our dancers got to
audition in front of Li Cunxin, well known as Mao’s Last Dancer.
In 2015, CGEN will celebrate its eleventh year as Queensland’s largest
youth performing arts event at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition
Centre (BCEC) with four performances on Friday 17 and Saturday 18

2015 Next Step Survey
The Queensland Government is conducting its annual statewide
survey of all students who completed Year 12 in 2014. The Next Step
survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive
picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland
school completers in the year after they finish Year 12.
Between March and June, all our students who completed Year 12 last
year can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based
survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government
Statistician’s Office to complete the survey. Please encourage them to
take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the
interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new
address so they can participate.

Gifted and Talented Holiday Program
Griffith University and Brainways Education is offering a school holiday
program featuring workshops for gifted and talented students. On April
7 and 8, selected students in Years 7-10 will participate in a series of
workshops designed to extend exceptional students. The workshops
are available in a range of subjects, including Mathematics (Musical
Mathematics), Science (Seeing the Light: Exploring Light and Lenses),
English (Breaking the News: News Writing, Reporting and Feature
Writing) and Philosophy (From Pigeons to the Facebook:

The Uniform Shop is run by the CDSHS P&C and all proceeds are
returned to the school for the benefit of our students. We accept cash

The most convenient way to purchase through School Shop Online is
with an e-Wallet where you bank money in your own e-Wallet account
which you can use to purchase any of our uniforms. If, however, you
choose to purchase through PayPal or by credit card, there will be
some additional transaction fees.

We now have good stocks of all our uniform items including knitted
jumpers, fleecy jumpers and tracksuit pants and jackets.
Additional Tuckshop Ordering Option
We are looking for 50 parents/carers to trial a new on-line ordering
system for the Tuckshop. Please contact Robyn on 0432 829947, if
you wish to be involved.
P & C Staff
We would like to introduce you to our P&C staff members. The
Tuckshop Convener is Karen, who works with Lisa, Tina and Kim,
our Tuckshop Assistants. Robyn runs the Uniform Shop. (Pictured L to

Karen started as the Convener in February 2012 and is a past CDSHS
student. Her favourite song is Drops of Jupiter by Train and Karen
loves spending her weekends with a book or watching live music.
Lisa started as a volunteer in the Tuckshop in 1998 and started
working here in 2000. Lisa’s favourite thing is going to the beach and
her favourite colour is purple. Lisa is really proud of her three children
graduating CDSHS and going on to successful careers.
Tina started as a volunteer in 2004, then in 2006 was employed as the
Uniform Shop Convener and is now working four days a week in the
Tuckshop. Tina is a past CDSHS student. Tina’s favourite thing to do is
to go camping on Straddie with her family.
Kim started as a volunteer in the Tuckshop two years ago and then
commenced working there in October 2013. Kim is originally from
Victoria but moved to Qld three years ago. Kim’s favourite thing to do is
sing and her favourite food is salmon.
Robyn is a past CDSHS student and all her five children have attended
here. Robyn has been a volunteer at CDSHS since 2007 and
commenced the duties of the Uniform Shop Convener in February

2013. Robyn is an avid book reader and movie goer.
Players Needed
Are you turning 30 this year or over 30 and looking to join a sport?
Redlands United Football Club is currently looking to fill some spots in
their Women’s Over 30’s Team.
Training is twice a week at our home grounds.
Games will vary in location and one game a week will be played on a
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday Night. (A draw will be out
soon for our 2015 season.)
This is a great opportunity to build new friendships, gain fitness you
never knew you had and most of all have some fun with ladies of the
same age.
