Newsletter 28 April 2015 Term 2 Week 2 On The Wings of Wisdom Coorparoo State School www.coorpaross.eq.edu.au Coorparoo State School Handbook 2015 Student Absentee Line – 3421 0360 From the Principal John Kennedy, Acting Principal, [email protected] THE SPIRIT OF ANZAC The Spirit of ANZAC is alive and well at CSS thanks to the committed efforts of our ANZAC committee. My thanks to Cathy Holyoak, Leanne Davissen, Donna GrantMitchell, Judi Shields and Sue Dixon who worked tirelessly in the planning and preparations for the moving tribute at school last week. The compassion of our school community was also evident at the Coorparoo and Districts RSL March and service where over 120 students participated – resplendent in their 100 years of ANZAC (CSS) hats. These two ceremonies were truly community events. From the families who donated flowers to our wonderful parent helpers who created our wreaths; from the TramStop26 team for the morning tea, to Leisa and her volunteers who helped serve this to our guests; from our parents and guests who visited on the day to the staff who honored the memory of all past and present servicemen and women via their own classroom events. The “spirit” continues as we look at creating a digital ANZAC space within our school website, continuing the establishment of our ANZAC Memorial Garden and creating a series of Honour Boards – the first of which will include the names of our past CSS students and staff who enlisted in World War I. “Community” in the dictionary should be accompanied by a picture of CSS. Last week was certainly an events week, starting with a visit from the Premier of Queensland accompanied by the Minister For Education, to launch the Premier’s Reading Challenge in our school library precinct. They were both impressed by this innovative space and of our famous “Book-man”. Our “runners” represented our school remarkably well at the district Cross Country Championships and returned with incredible results. Our interschool sports students had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon on Friday at their respective venues and participated with exemplary behaviour and attitude. To all of our staff and volunteers who assisted last week, thank you. Coorparoo State School remains the school of choice for a large number of families who reside outside the school catchment area, as evidenced again by the turnout at the Out of Catchment Sign On. All families within catchment as well as those who have a child already enrolled at CSS are invited to submit their 2016 enrolments to the school office from Wednesday 29 April onwards. SOAR – Be Safe, Be Organised, Be an Active Learner, Be Responsible Page 1 of 11 From the Acting Deputy Principal Jinder Kaur, Acting Deputy, [email protected] THE COORPAROO SPIRIT It has been a great start to the term with Week 1 culminating in the ANZAC ceremony on Friday. Many comments were made to me, by both parents and visitors, on the exemplary conduct of the students and the support of the staff and parents. I was able to respond with absolute sincerity, “That is the Coorparoo spirit”. This collective Coorparoo spirit was demonstrated last week when there was a minor crisis and a parent stepped right in without any hesitation to assist a teacher and a student. Thanks to Rebecca Smith for assisting the student and teacher with calm and compassion and to Julie Doherty for coming to the rescue when more help was needed. These are just recent examples of what contributes to the Coorparoo State School culture and makes it a positive environment for teaching and learning. From the Acting Support Teacher Literacy and Numeracy STUDENT CARDS David Knowles, Acting STLaN [email protected] I am excited about stepping into the acting STLaN role at CSS during Term 2. Coorparoo State School is very highly regarded for the support and commitment it shows to the diverse array of learners found within the school community. Of course the high quality of the advocacy and support experienced by students, their families and teachers is due in no small part to the tireless efforts and leadership of Ms Jinder Kaur. It takes only a short time in the school to realise she has imbued the role with a deep sense of compassion, wisdom and attention to detail. In my role as Learning Support Teacher here at CSS I bring a deep commitment to the philosophy and policy of inclusivity in Queensland schools. I have an unwavering belief that each one of us deserve to experience a full and rich life and the ability to make decisions in a complex world means that access to education has never been more important. In partnership with teachers and parents I aim to continue the great work done here at CSS that ensures all students have access to a high quality education. I will continue to provide classroom teachers with the support they need to help students fully realise their potential. From the Literacy & Numeracy Coach Green Students Cards have been sent home to every student. Please check the details and make sure they are correct. Make any alterations if needed. Parking spaces during pick-up and set-down times are at a premium—subsequently, competition for these spaces can lead to poor driver behaviour and potentially dangerous parking practices. The primary purpose for parking enforcement around schools is to ensure child safety. While it is certainly not Council’s intention to make parking near school an overly onerous task, regulating parking activities is necessary to promote safe driving practices during pick-up and drop-off times. Council officers will be attending school zones to ensure safe parking practices. Officers engage with drivers where it is safe to do so and advise of the risks associated with illegal parking. Officers may issue parking fines in cases where illegal parking practices are observed. Please visit the Council’s website to read about parking legally in Brisbane to avoid unnecessary parking fines. Page 4 of 11 Return economy airfares to Los Angeles, California from Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane. In the event that the winner resides outside of these cities, return domestic airfares will also be provided. Five nights accommodation at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel Return private airport-to-hotel transfers A three-day Theme Park Hopper ticket (includes same day admission to both Disneyland Park and California Adventure Park) A Disney Family Breakfast Dining Experience AUD$2,000 spending money. What an incentive for students to keep on banking! HELPING HANDS Onsite on 0458 038 769 or Central office on 07 5438 9549 or visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au We are back again for another term, now the children are definitely settled and getting into the swing of things. We had such a great and fun vacation care with so many activities and fun experiences for all the children to participate in. Amongst all the fun children brought up throughout the holidays how important our environment is, some children even mentioned they could see lots of rubbish around the school, so part of the program that we incorporated in was a weekly rubbish pick up. A group of children on both weeks walked around the whole school looking for rubbish that needed to be in the bin or things that we could recycle to put in our recycle bin. From this we are beginning to look at sustainability in the service and have started a recycle bin for scrap paper boxes that we can later use in art activities. Remember always think green, we are. SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB Alex Immer, [email protected] Scholastic Book Club – Issue 3 Due Date 6 May This week a brochure will come home with your child from the Scholastic Book Club; the due date for return is on the front of the brochure. Scholastic has been making some minor changes over the Term 1 holidays. The order form can be found now in the middle of the combined brochure. Also to note is that the Extra brochure attached to the appropriate year level brochure is now no longer identical across the year level brochures. Ordering is completely optional but should you wish to order from this brochure please note the payment and ordering options as follows: 1. Online parent ordering and payment: Coorparoo State School has opted into Scholastic’s Linked Online Ordering and Payment System (LOOP). It is very much encouraged that you use this option only if paying by Credit Card rather than just phoning through your credit card. Go to www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP If you use LOOP you do not have to return any paperwork to the school, you receive email confirmation of order and the Book Club receive notice of the order, your child’s name and class so it can be easily delivered via the Book Club when the books arrive. It also is a great time saver for the volunteers who run the Book Club so will be much appreciated. 2. Payment by Cash or Cheque: Please manually complete the order form clearly stating child’s name and class and ensure correct cash is included or write a cheque payable to Scholastic Australia, then place order and payment in envelope clearly labelled “Scholastic Book Club” and give to the office by the due date listed above. What is Scholastic Book Club? Scholastic Book Club is a program run by volunteer parents/carers at the school. Scholastic Book Club provides not only access for the CSS community to age appropriate reading books but also provides $ rewards to the classroom teachers to enable them (or combine $ rewards with their peers) to purchase educational resources for classrooms from Scholastic Australia. In 2014, teachers combined rewards were over $3,000. (20% of each individual order is converted to $ rewards for your teacher). There will be eight issues distributed during the year and again, it is optional to order. SOAR – Be Safe, Be Organised, Be an Active Learner, Be Responsible Page 5 of 11 All deliveries are sent to the school and distributed to your child. Should you wish for your child not to receive the order a quick email to [email protected] just advising of this and we can hold the order for parent collection. Note a cut-off date does apply for orders via the Book Club (including the LOOP online ordering system). We welcome anyone who would like to assist with date stamping and collating or distribution of Book Club during the year. If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions please contact me on [email protected]. P&C Contact the P&C - [email protected] P&C NEWS WHAT IS THE P&C? We are a forum where you can join in a conversation about what’s happening at school. The Principal discusses what’s happening “on the ground”, there are updates from the sub-committees (Music Sub-Committee, Swim Club). Occasionally we have “guest speakers” such as the Principal from Coorparoo Secondary College, members of parliament or teachers from the school. There are opportunities to just listen, provide your perspective, ask questions, and volunteer to help or just meet likeminded people. Who is the P&C Executive? Bec, Suzie, Kelly, Megan, Tony, Amy, Lisa, Rebecca are the 2015 P&C Executive. We are mums and dad from Coorparoo. Most of us have been at CSS for a few years now but we love meeting new faces. For the next eight weeks we will introduce one of us individually – hopefully by the end of Term 2 we will get to meet you! The next meeting is Wednesday 20 May at 7pm in the Library. All are welcome and we’d love to see you there! SPELL-A-THON There is still time to fundraise for Spell-a-thon and qualify for a prize! Spell-a-thon envelopes are due back at the end of next week (8 May) and online fundraising will close by 11 May. Don’t forget to mark your prize selection if you qualify for an incentive prize by raising over $35. To have their name entered in the Major Prize draw (iPad mini or Kindle Paperwhite) students must raise $150 or more. So if you’re close - contact a few more sponsors and see whether you can reach that goal! Please contact us if you have any questions at: [email protected] TRIVIA NIGHT The new date for the Trivia Night has been set! Clear the calendar for Saturday 30 May at 7pm. Registrations are open for tables of 8-10 however if you don’t have the numbers we provide a table match-making service too! Cost is now $15 with BYO food and drinks. MOTHER’S DAY STALL - THURSDAY 7 MAY Mums (and Grandmas) hold a special place in our hearts – and Mother’s Day is the perfect time to tell them how much we love them and how much we appreciate all the things they do for us. SOAR – Be Safe, Be Organised, Be an Active Learner, Be Responsible Page 6 of 11 The P&C is once again running a Mother’s Day Stall and we have organised some lovely gifts. Gifts will range in price from $1 to $6. The Gift Guide is included at the end of the Newsletter. Print this off so your child/ren can look at the gifts available. This is to help siblings decide what to buy so they don’t accidently purchase the same gift. Mums may also like to give some ‘hints’ as well. We still need lots of volunteers to lend a hand with the stall on Thursday 7 May. We are looking for helpers from 9am to 10.30am or 11am to 12.30pm. Please email Leisa if you are available [email protected]. We will also need plastic bags for the stall. If you have spare plastic shopping bags please drop them at the Uniform Shop. Thank you. MUSIC PERFORMANCE SHIRTS Music performance shirts and stockings are now available via an order system online on www.flexischools.com.au. Orders close on Friday 1 May. Any families requiring either the white performance shirt or the black stockings are required to order these online. Items will be delivered on or before Thursday 14 May. Please note that students will require these items for the Winter Music Concert on Tuesday 19 May. TRAVEL AND TRAFFIC WORKING PARTY We are looking for volunteers willing to help with Stop Drop and Go in Term 2. If you are interested in finding out more please email the traffic working group on [email protected]. GRANTS The next Grants meeting will be Thursday 30 April at 9-10am in the school staff room. All are welcome to attend. If you have any questions please contact Amy at [email protected]. IT'S A CARNIVAL YEAR! Date Saver: The 2015 Coorparoo Carnival will be held on Sunday 18 October. My name is Alex Immer and I am the 2015 Carnival Convenor. For those who don't know me I have been a parent at the school since the beginning of 2010 and have a son in Year 5 and daughter in Year 3. I do a lot of different things at the school but the main ones include Scholastic Book Club Co-ordinator, Book Packs and Parent Rep duties. The Carnival is a fantastic fundraiser for our school and in past years the money raised has been put to good use by the P&C in collaboration with the Schools leadership team eg, the 2013 Carnival raised money to go towards the amazing CSS Innovation Centre. Support from the CSS community has always been strong with our families and local businesses coming together to make the day a success. Participating in the Carnival process is also a great way to get to know your CSS community. Anyone interested in a role or have ideas for the 2015 Coorparoo Carnival is invited to attend either of the meetings being held this week: Thursday 30 April 7.30 pm School Library or Friday 1 May 9.15am Music Room or you are welcome to email me at [email protected] any time. TRAMSTOP 26 Kate, Station Master, TramStop 26 [email protected] MENU ITEM OF THE WEEK As the temperature drops, why not warm up with our new Muzza’s beef pie lunch packs. We have a choice of one regular-sized pie and steamed mini corn cob ($6.00) or two mini pies and corn ($5.00). Muzza’s is a local business and their beef pies are made on-site using premium lean mince. Their pies are free from additives, preservatives, colourings and MSG. AUTUMN MENU COMPETITION WINNER Congratulations to Sabrina Graham of 1M for her winning autumn menu entry: Zucchini Soup with Bread Roll. Her entry came complete with recipe and a beautiful illustration. Sabrina wins a $10 TramStop26 voucher. PRICE CHANGES You may have noticed some price changes on the TramStop 26 menu. Fortunately only a small number of items have increased in price and we’re pleased that we’ve been able to reduce the price on other items. This follows an analysis of all our costs. We still make the majority of our food on-site with fresh ingredients to ensure we continue to provide a healthy, tasty and affordable food service to the school. SOAR – Be Safe, Be Organised, Be an Active Learner, Be Responsible Page 7 of 11 COMMUNITY NEWS TOUCH SKILLS AND GAMES FOR PLAYERS IN THE 5-10 AGE GROUP This week, we will commence skills sessions for girls and boys who are newcomers to Touch and boys who missed out on playing 9s in season 1, 2005 because of lack of opposition. The sessions will also be open to graduates of Tiny Touchies run by BMTA. The sessions will be held from 4.45 pm to 5.50 pm on Thursdays from 30 April until early June 2015. You will recall that I offered three different times. The one selected was the clear favourite. Unfortunately, it is not everyone’s first preference. I apologise for that. BMTA has agreed to make a field available at Whites Hill Touch complex each week. I will take the sessions with assistance from others. The sessions will be free. We will teach the basic skills of Touch. The intention is to finish with a game at the end of each session. We will place all participants in Southern Storm teams next season if they wish to play. Girls will start in early August and boys will start in early September. If anyone wishes to play with another club, he or she is still welcome at the skills sessions. If your children and their friends wish to participate, please meet me on field seven at 4.45 pm on Thursday. Please make sure each child brings a water bottle. Please let me know whether or not your child will be participating. If they are unable to participate because of conflicts with other activities, but would like to be placed in a team next season, let me know so that I can help. Southern Storm is Brisbane’s largest Touch club. It is more than double the size of the next biggest club. The club was founded under another name in 1974. It enters teams in BMTA competitions at Whites Hill. Southern Storm caters for male and female Touch players from 7 years and under to Premier grade men and women. If you have any queries, call me on 0412045455. Ken Willett, Director of Juniors, Southern Storm Touch Club Inc.
