Autumn 2015
Movers & Shakers Autumn 2015 World MS Day The MS Society of WA (MSWA) will hold the annual MS Street Appeal on World MS Day, Wednesday, 27 May, in the Perth CBD. The day will consist of volunteers, Members, families and friends participating in attention-grabbing activities to gain awareness and raise funds for MSWA. Some of the activities include: a double decker bus driving around the Perth CBD making loud noises to grab people’s attention, our red morph suit people roaming around the CBD with Stand Up to MS signs, and volunteers participating in the annual street appeal. ‘Stand Up to MS’ merchandise will also be available for sale on the day, as well as an opportunity to donate money to MSWA. Since the Street Appeal’s inaugural year, more than $60,000 has been raised for Western Australians living with MS. Volunteers will also have the chance to get on board the double decker bus and make some noise in the city. I had primary-progressive MS which means my level of disability has, and will continue to, significantly increase over time. Four years ago, my disability had progressed too far and my husband Ian had to quit his job to become my full-time carer. We struggled along at home the best we could, but last year my MS was the worst it had ever been. Ian worried that I would find myself in an emergency situation alone and with no-one to help me. I was only 43 when I was diagnosed, with two young children. I never imagined it would Linda with her husband Ian. leave me in a high support accommodation facility, away from everyone I love. Since October 2014, I’ve been living in one of the MS Society’s high-support accommodation facilities in Hamilton Hill. Here I have access to care support workers, physiotherapists and many other services. It is thanks to your generous donations that people living with MS like me, are able to receive the care and support they need. It could also lead us closer to a cure, and then families would no longer be torn apart by MS.
