Have you ever been around the world in one day? Join the team
Have you ever been around the world in one day? Join the team and give it a go! Around the World in a Day (AWD) is a community engagement initiative by DM Thomas Foundation for Young People (formerly known as Hilton in the Community Foundation) which aims to make a big difference in our local communities. For the first time ever we are extending the campaign to include many more members of the community, and we would be delighted if you would like to join with us again in 2015 as we go Around the World in a Day. Please find included in this document an overview of the campaign, details about 2015’s event, and information about how you can participate. 1. 2015 Campaign This year, AWD will run from 21st - 27th June. We are inviting venues across Europe to take part in this unique campaign and be part of a movement to transform young lives. To reflect the growing number of participants and the increasing reach of the campaign, from the UK across Europe and even reaching to the Middle East and Australia, we have themed this year’s event ‘One World, One Team.’ This could be a fantastic starting point for an event idea, as well as celebrating the diversity of teams and individuals taking part. Please note that although AWD is also a fundraising campaign, our focus is on community engagement and fundraising is not compulsory in order to take part. Please see the Fundraising section for more information and for details about the Foundation’s match funding commitment. 2. Where you come in We would like as many schools as possible to help us in our goal of going around the world and we would be delighted if you would like to join the team. By taking part in Around the World in a Day you will be joining schools all over the UK who want to make a difference in their communities, as well as enjoying a fun activity with your students. 3. Where we come in We will be on hand throughout the run-up to the campaign and on the day to: -promote your event to the wider community through our social media channels. -provide a range of resources including sponsorship forms, T shirts and certificates -check in with you regularly to make sure that you have everything you need and to answer your questions. -track all kilometres raised by schools for a special Schools Leaderboard Optional extras: -Individually named certificates for everyone taking part so they have a memento of the day and of their contribution to going around the world. -Individual AWD T shirts available in a range of sizes at £5 each (including P&P). 4. Fundraising You can use AWD as a fundraiser but it is not compulsory in order to take part. AWD events can be used to raise funds for the following causes: -DMTFYP’s grant fund supporting disadvantaged and vulnerable young people -Your own school or charity -A charity of your choice providing it works with young people under the age of 25 in the areas of health and/or education. The Foundation will match the first £200 that your school raises. (Please note that this amount is per school, and not per child.) Anything raised over this will still be made over as a grant to the charity of your choice. In order to qualify for matched fundraising, funds need to be collected centrally through the Foundation, and details of how to bank funds with us can be found below. 100% of net funds raised will be made as a grant to a charity of your choice supporting young people. History of AWD AWD is a community engagement event which originated within our partnership with Hilton Worldwide. In its original form we encouraged volunteers across Europe to hold events in their own venues on one particular day which included activities allowing them to ‘collect’ kilometres. The aim of the campaign was to collectively clock up enough kilometres to go around the circumference of the globe i.e.40,075kms. The first AWD was held in 2008 and has grown significantly since this then, incorporating events as far afield as Dubai and Melbourne. To date the campaign has raised over £699,000 and helped over 130,000 young people. To reflect the changing needs of participating venues, we have also extended the campaign dates to take place over a week. Venues still choose a single day within this week in which to hold an event, and they collect as many kilometres as possible within this day. In 2015 we opened up the campaign to include schools and youth organisations for the first time, including organising a special Schools Day for the prize of a £1,000 grant to the charity of their choice.
