28th April 2015 #12 Principal’s Pen Dear Parents 100 years of Anzac … we will remember them. We held 3 separate assemblies last Friday to commemorate the Anzac tradition. P-2 had their assembly in the Prep -Year outside enclave, Year 3 commemorated in the Anzac Garden and Years 4-6 students ran their ceremony in the PAC. Each ceremony targeted a different audience and utilised various spaces in our school. Classes also had various lead up activities to inform students of the meaning of the occasion. The wreaths on our fence line also visually reminded our community of this special day. Last Sunday our swim club, the Tiger Sharks ran a very successful club championship. This Wednesday our new P&C executive will hold the April monthly meeting. This new band of volunteers will progress our school community to even greater heights. To have input, come to the meeting on Wednesday or email the P&C with any ideas on [email protected]. Helping Hands is another area for making improvements to our School. Check out our Facebook site. The first bike bus of the year commences Thursday. This is a great event and lays the foundation for alleviating future traffic issues … we hope. Join us on Thursday at 7.30am at the meeting points on the map that was sent home today. Finally this week our cross-country team competes in the Cairns District trials on the Esplanade for a 9.15am start. Good luck competitors. As you can see many events occur at our school. None of these events can happen without the contributions of many people and it is true that Edge Hill has a great band of teachers, parents, friends and supporters who make these opportunities possible. As well as our Reading at Home information session this evening (and other sessions arranged by your class teacher), your children are beginning their Geography Unit this term, “What is my place like?”. Don’t be surprised if you hear your child making observations about the location and features of their favourite place! Looking forward to seeing you all this evening. YEAR 1 Welcome back to all Year 1 families. This term in Literacy, Year 1 will be learning about characters in stories and language we can use to describe different character traits and actions. We will also be exploring how things can be changed in Science and in History we will be learning all about our past. Students are also continuing to practise for the musical performance of 'Little Red Riding Hood' to be presented later this term. We are looking forward to another busy term and thank all families for their continued support in their child's learning journey. YEAR 2 Year 2 had a fantastic time last Thursday looking at antique toys, household items and two beautiful vintage cars as part of our History unit. A big thank you to the Historical Society for bringing in the items and giving detailed talks on how they were used. The children were so engaged and interested. Also thank you Mrs Hogan for organising the cars, we loved them! Japanese News Host Families Needed 27th July – 2nd August and 20th—23rd August Please contact the office or email [email protected] if you would like to register your interest. Get your tyres pumped up and your helmet ready to ride to school for a free breakfast and prizes to be won. YEAR 3 Anzac Day was commemorated by Year 3 with a special parade in our Anzac Garden. It was a very special occasion. There have been some very interesting conversations in our classrooms about relatives who have served in the Australian armed forces. The parade on Saturday was supported and enjoyed by many. Well done!! YEAR 4 What a great start to the term. The children are already focusing very well on their work. We attended a special ANZAC Parade on Friday where the children were very solemn and respectful. Year Four excursions are being held in Week 3. We are visiting the Waster Transfer Station and The Tanks Art Centre. Don’t forget to return your permission slips and money to your class teacher. Have a great week! 4A / B We have started this term continuing our History and Geography units from last term. You should have received the notes home regarding permission and payment for the Geography excursion in Week 3 to the Portsmith Transfer Station. If they could be returned by Friday ready for the following week, that would be appreciated. Maths this term is more work with common fractions, money, operations and introducing some more of the multiplication number facts. In English we are doing Asian folktales and then Aboriginal Dreamtime stories, where students will publish their own folktale into a book in Technology. We are finishing our Art Unit from last term with their assessment piece which is going to the Children's Festival at the Tanks on Mother's Day. We are also contributing our assistance with a maze in the festival as well. We will be walking to the Tanks in Week 3 for that as well. We try to keep them simple as possible, but if you have any issues then please do not hesitate to contact me.
