The traditional use of maps within the field of historical
geography is being modernized by the incorporation of
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) that allow the
analysis of spatial databases and the integration of various
historical sources within a common geographic framework.
The advent of the internet and web-based GIS servers enable
the public to explore, analyze and visualize spatial data and
maps. However, the world as portrayed in maps depends on
technology and on the intentions of the map maker, as well
as on the scale of the map and time it was made.
Reconstructing past land cover and land use from historical
maps therefore requires the user to be aware of issues of
map accuracy and map completeness, in addition to the
physical deterioration of maps.
In the workshop we will present the state of the art
technologies and approaches in the use of historical maps
and other historical spatial sources with GIS tools. The
workshop will take place over two days (January 16th-17th,
2013). On the first day lectures will be presented by leading
historical GIS academics and practitioners. The second day
will be devoted to hands-on practice offered to students and
academics in aspects of historical GIS, and will take place in
a computer GIS Lab at the Hebrew University. Participation
in the second day of the workshop will be limited to 25

‫ואופן הצגתו תלויים בטכנולוגיה שהייתה זמינה ליוצר המפה‬
‫ וכן בקנה המידה ובזמן בהם נוצרה‬,‫כמו גם במטרות המפה‬
‫ שחזור שימושי הקרקע והתכסית מתוך מפות‬.‫המפה‬
‫היסטוריות ראוי שייעשה ע"י החוקר תוך כדי התחשבות‬
.‫בנושאים של דיוק המפה ושלמות המידע המופיע במפה‬
‫ הטכנולוגיה והגישות‬,‫בסדנא שתיערך נציג את מיטב הידע‬
‫הזמינות כיום לשימוש במפות היסטוריות ובמקורות‬

The workshop, sponsored by the National Library of Israel,
will be led by Dr. Noam Levin (Dept. of Geography, The
Hebrew University of Jerusalem), and will host two world
leaders in historical GIS: Prof. Prof. David Bodenhamer
(Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, USA)
and Dr. Ian Gregory (Lancaster University, UK).
