I have lived a very simple and normal life in spite of my partial visual disability. My parents never treated me differently but always encouraged me to do whatever I’d like. I went to school and college and majored in Sociology at St. Xavier’s College in 2012 and after that I started working at my father’s office. I then got to know of a basic computer course in Microsoft Office from the Indian Association for the Visually Handicapped. I also did a short course in ‘ABCD’ which is ‘Announcing, Broadcasting, Compering and Dubbing’. At one point I wanted to become a radio jockey, however, every time I wore the big headphones during training. I could hear nothing of the outside world. It was so quiet; that’s when I decided it’s not for me. Sometime in year 2004, a partially blind man approached me, asking for some 4 help with computers. I didn’t know him personally but he found out from someone that I’ve done a computer course and could help him. After I started meeting and helping him with his problems, it was my dad who saw a bigger opportunity here and approached a trustee of the Muncherjee Nowrojee Banajee Industrial Home for the Blind in Jogeshwari West. My dad thought that I could start a small computer class there to train more students. That was back in March 2006. I did this until I recently started the Tanya Computer Center independently in the premises of my home. The course is free of cost; however, I do take a refundable deposit of Rs. 500 because I feel that only when one pays for something do they see the value in it. My father has helped me a lot in advertising and promoting my classes and at present I run two batches with around six students each. Gaining computer knowledge has become possible today through a licensed American software called ‘JAWS’ which is a screen reader and enables a person to hear what he/ she types. Starting classes on my own also leaves me with some time to exercise at the gym OCTOBER-NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 at The Club. The trainers there are very helpful and guide me so it’s fun. I sincerely feel that having at least basic computer knowledge is a must for everyone. It opens up a possibility for State Government jobs. A lot of visually impaired people I know are employed in banks and other corporate companies. It gives me immense satisfaction when my students learn and become confident day by day. I was blessed with a very loving family and wonderful, supportive friends, but many do not have such a privilege. A lot of people feel pity for those with disabilities and, hence, do not encourage them to learn or do something new in their lives. I always believe that ‘disabled people don’t do different things, they just do things differently’. The sympathetic attitude of people should change and they need to become more encouraging, especially parents. My dream is that all visually impaired people will attain basic computer knowledge and eventually I would like to start a recruitment service for them. This world is beautiful and filled with people who are ready to help and instate confidence in us. If you know someone who might benefit from this course, or for more information, please feel free to write to me on [email protected] TRIBUTE A TRIBUTE TO DR RAM TARNEJA Mr Dinesh Khanna pays tribute to Dr Ram Tarneja, Board of Advisor at The Club, who passed away on 7th August, 2015. W hile it seems like I lost a friend, a mentor and a guide, Dr Ram Tarneja’s contribution to The Club and his affection towards my family will always continue to live in our hearts. Dr Ram Tarneja, Board of Advisor at The Club, was former Managing Director of Bennett Coleman (BCCL). He was also former President of IMC and Director on board of leading companies such as Mahindra & Mahindra, HDFC, ITC, Priyadarshini and many others. He was widely respected in the industry and passed away in Mumbai on 7th August, 2015. He was 83. Going back to 1991, when the idea of The Club birthed in our hearts, Rambhai was a pillar of support and encouragement to Nishi and myself. Later on, when we built our Management team, he was always accessible, offering advice every step of the way. Humble and polite, he built good relations even amongst our social circles and was always aware of the growing trends in the Indian corporate industry. His wisdom, guidance and experience have made The Club a 6 successful venture. Nishi and our family have fond memories of time spent with Dr Ram Tarneja and his family. He has always been an inspiration. On behalf of the Management team at The Club and OCTOBER-NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 my family, we wish his wife, Rani, their daughters, Rumah and Ruchi, and their families great comfort and our heartfelt condolences. Meet the wonderful new Chefs at The Club WE ALSO DELIVER Tell us about your past experience and background as a Chef. I started with an apprenticeship in the kitchens of JW Marriott Mumbai, first at The Lotus and then the other kitchens. After this, I cooked Thai and Chinese cuisines at the Marriott. With my newly acquired Thai and Chinese knowledge, I moved on to the Sahara Star Hotel but was soon back to the Marriot as I enjoyed cooking Chinese. I joined The Club mid-year at the Oriental Wok as my forte is, as I mentioned, Thai and Chinese cuisines, especially Szechwan. I have always enjoyed cooking. I have not formally studied the culinary arts, rather just ‘learnt on the job’ through my apprenticeships and worked my way up from there. Now I live here in Mumbai and I like the life in Mumbai and the pace of the city. What are of your favourite Oriental items you enjoy cooking and improving? I love making dim sums. It takes practice, 8 patience and skill, and can be very tricky for beginners. But I think that is the reason I liked mastering it so much, because it was so challenging. I would like all the members and customers at The Club to visit the Oriental Wok for a taste of my dim sums which I am sure they will enjoy. I find it incredible that you have learnt such authentic oriental cooking all on your own, it is amazing! Yes, I have worked under a Chinese Specialty Chef at the Marriott. After my first taste of oriental cooking, there was no going back. I delved deeper into Chinese flavours and experimented with Thai food. Tell us about your background as a chef. My grandfather was an Italian and Continental chef and he would also make delicious Parsi dishes. I used to help my mother in the kitchen since the age of seven years and I really enjoyed the whole process. My uncle was a bakery sous chef and asked me to start apprenticeship with him at the Ambassador Sky Chef in Andheri East. I worked as an apprentice for a year, post which I became an assistant chef for two years in the main kitchen. While in bakery, I learnt baking breads, pizzas, buns and croissants. Tell us about that. In 2010, I joined Moshe’s, a well known Mediterranean restaurant. While working with them I also got to learn Turkish, Lebanese, Spanish, Moroccan and Egyptian cuisines. The beauty of Mediterranean cuisine is its simplicity. Everything is prepared fresh and is very tasty. It also doesn’t take very long to prepare. I also have a lot of scope to play around with the presentation of the dish to make it look appealing. Mediterranean cuisine is not very famous in India yet. Not many know that the cuisine is very close to the Indian taste and palate. They use a lot of cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, start anise, ginger, garlic powder and chilies. All of these are used in the garam masala used in Indian dishes. How has your experience been as a Chef? I love my job. It gives me immense pleasure to see people enjoy and relish what I prepare. I also love being part of a team. It’s not just me who makes the dish; it’s the entire team. At The Club, it’s even more exciting to present the dishes because our members are all well-travelled and exposed to different cultures. So it’s a big challenge and opportunity for me to present the best here. Also, The Club is very particular about quality, which is a must for any dish. My journey as a chef started in Uttarakhand when I joined a restaurant as a trainee in the tandoor department. My father is also a chef and he inspired me to take up this profession and learn the art of cooking authentic North Indian cuisine. I specialised in the tandoor department and loved cooking kebabs and other tandoori dishes. I worked in several hotels located in different cities like Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Jaipur. The job presented a new challenge and that helped me master my skills as a tandoor chef. And now, here at The Club, I am quite excited about showcasing my skills at the Garden Grill restaurant, which our members look forward to. CHEF GAJENDAR SINGH Chef Gajendar Singh talks about his tryst with tandoori cuisine What made you choose Tandoor as your specialty over the varied other cuisines? Tandoor takes us back to our roots. It has the perfect mix and blend of all the Indian flavours which is just right for the Indian palate. Although the dishes are best enjoyed when they are hot and spicy, it can also be modified for those who can’t eat very spicy food. So everyone has a chance to enjoy. How are you preparing for the much awaited opening of the Garden Grill restaurant at The Club? Garden Grill is an open air restaurant and that in itself contributes to the whole dining experience at The Club. OCTOBER-NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 11 ANADA WINE CLUB WINE WEDNESDAYS WITH SULA A memorable evening of sampling some of the best wines from the Sula Vineyards. A nada Wine Club was founded in 2004 by Mr. Dinesh Khanna and Mr. Ranjan Kapur. Anada Wine Club aims to promote and encourage wine appreciation in environments that are conducive to wine drinking. Anada Wine Club is a true community of likeminded individuals; its members increase the knowledge on appreciation of wines, whether beginners or passionate wine enthusiasts. Currently we have 37 couples who are active members with the wine club. Its been our endeavor to organise experiential wine tasting evenings in the past. Apart from the wine tasting evening with Indian wines, Anada Wine Club has hosted French, German, Israeli, Australian, South African and New Zealand Wine Evenings. International 12 wines paired with delectable cuisines have added to the starry affairs of the wine evenings. Recently, members enjoyed a memorable Sula event, hosted as part of the Wine Wednesdays on 22nd July, 2015. This event was was organized with a view to introduce and sample some of Sula’s most well-known and delicious wines. Each guest was welcomed with a refreshing glass of Sula Seco Blush Rose, a delicious sparkling desert wine. Hereafter was a presentation on the Sula company and the wines on display at the event. The presentation was conducted by Sovna Puri, Head of Tasting & Training and General Manager of Sales & Marketing. The event had three tasting tables, one for each, reds, whites and dessert & sparkling OCTOBER-NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 wines. Representatives at each table made the entire ordeal very interactive, giving guests all the information required on each of the wines on display, including the manufacturing and storing processes, what types of grapes were used and what food it goes well with. The white wine tasting table displayed the Sula Riesling and the Sula Chenin Blanc. The Sula Riesling is a delicious, fruity, aromatic wine with hints of green apples, grapefruit, peach and honey. It is best served chilled, and because of its sugar and acidity, it is quite versatile when paired with food. The Sula Chenin Blanch is a semi-dry, refreshingly light wine bursting with tropical fruit flavours of pineapple, pear and green apple. Both wines should be served chilled at 8 to 10°C. Love wine? Join the Anada Wine Club and be a part of the celebration that felicitates this beautiful drink! The red wine tasting table displayed the luscious Sula Zinfandel and the refined Sula Rasa Shiraz. The Sula Zinfandel is a succulent, jammy red wine, made of Zinfandel, a sophisticated variety of black-skinned wine grape, with blackberry aromas and cinnamon and plum flavours. Rasa Shiraz, the finest red wine ever to be produced from the estate vineyards of Sula, is a complex wine, with power and finesse. Rasa will only be produced in the best vintage years. The dessert and sparkling wine tasting table served the Sula Late Harvest Chenin Blanc and the welcome wine, the Sula Seco Rose. Late Harvest Chenin Blanc is the perfect close to a delicious meal and an elegant aperitif. Sula Seco Rosé is a medium dry rosé sparkling wine with a lovely pink colour and sweet fruity aromas of nectarine, water melon, soft white fruits and deep scented white flowers. Also on offer was Sula’s delicious Grapeseed Oil, perfect for dressings, dips and starters. It was served with Balsamic Vinegar and French baguettes to dip. All in all, the entire evening was a complete success, with a live band and some delicious food that complimented the wines served. What do you like about The Club? I came to Mumbai in 1989. Coming from an army life, open spaces, traveling etc. I couldn’t fathom the idea of living in flats layered one on top of one another. That’s why I love The Club. There’s a great sense of aesthetics and space. It is very elegant and there’s a style to it that’s subtle and not in your face. It makes you comfortable the moment you enter. What I also like about The Club is that they are very strict about their selection process. 14 How do you like to rejuvenate and relax? I love to walk bare feet on the green grass at The Club. It’s so hard to find such places in cities. I have learnt Iyengar yoga and regularly practice it. I also love the sea. Sometimes I go into the waters up to half my legs. I love spending time in the library. It’s a nice quiet place with a good collection of books and magazine to read. I also love swimming and come here almost every day in the morning. OCTOBER-NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 Hopefully, soon I will start squash, too. And most importantly I love to get a good massage that relaxes my body completely. For that, the Antara Spa is one such place. Why do you think massages are important for the body? Your body is your ID card on earth. Tell me, what is the proof that you exist on this earth? This is the first question I often ask student actors and student directors in my acting workshops,; what is the proof that you are you? And the answers are often really funny. Someone says, ‘my family, my friends, my passport, my drivers license’ (it’s always about things and other people creating your identity) and then I say if all that is taken away, then what is the proof that you are here? And then it comes home to them that it is the physical body. I feel the only proof of our existence is our body. Sure, you can exist as a soul, a ghost, a spirit but who has seen them? You can debate on whether they really exist, but your body gives you a form, a proof. It’s not wrong when our shastras say that your body is the temple of your soul. You live through your body. Keeping this in mind, it’s very important to look after your body. I believe that massages are a good way to spend time with your body. A massage helps you detox, cleanse, open up your lymph glands and completely relax. After a hectic week at work or traveling, going for a nice massage is a great way to rejuvenate. You learn to understand your body and take care of it, to connect to it. Tell us about your experience at Antara Spa. I have visited the Antara Spa about three or four times since the last few months and I really like it. The décor and design is very simple, elegant and serene. It’s minimalistic with a style. There’s something splendid about it. It is also very sensibly located. The ladies changing room connects to the spa. You don’t have to walk out in the open. The rooms are also very well designed and have just the right look and feel to them. It’s of the right size with just the essential things. It’s private, quiet and peaceful. No one can peep into your room. It’s not very compact like in other Spas. It’s also well lit; I’ve been to spas that are so dark and dim. Finally, how has your experience with the therapists been? I’ve tried the different therapies here such as the Swedish massage, the Antara signature massage and each one has its own benefits. The therapists are nice too. They are gentle and know what to do. They are soft-spoken and very professional. I would certainly recommend everyone to visit the Antara Spa at least once every 15 days. NAYNA TANEJA Nayna started playing squash at the age of seven, following her father to the court. Her coach, Ajaz, is also her mentor for the sport. The first tournament in which she participated was the Juhu Gymkhana Squash Championship, in which played mixed Under-11 when she was just eight-years-old. Her major break came in November 2014 when she took part in MSSA and played Girls Under-11 against the top seeds No. 1 and No. 5. She was ranked third in MSSA. Nayna AKASH GANDHI Young Akash, at 14-years-old, started playing tennis two years ago. His dad introduced him to the sport, and once he started playing, he knew he had found his calling. He was training under Anjan Viplav at The Club and loves playing tennis here because he feels the team is very passionate, the coaches are fantastic and The Club has the best facility for tennis in Mumbai. It also requires a lot of patience and mental and physical strength. To remain fit, he visits the gym regularly and also does aqua aerobics with the swimming coach, Anand, at The Club. He has participated in IATA at a national level held in places like Aurangabad, Pune and Hyderabad. He also represented his school in MSSA. Text by Saifuddin Colombowala O ur journey began once we landed at Keflavik airport, where we rented a car that would serve as our mode of transport for our entire stay in Iceland. We drove to Iceland’s charming capital, Reykjavik, a town of medium size, with museums, chapels, and lots of restaurants, bars and pubs. Our first sight was the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa, 46 km away from Reykjavik. It comprises of a large hot-water spring of hot geothermal water, and is an absolute delight to step into when it is an almost freezing 2 degrees Celsius outside. The next day we spent in Reykjavik, visiting Hallgrímskirkja, a Lutheran parish church, Tjörnin, a beautiful and prominent lake that the city seems to be built around and Perlan, Reykjavik’s landmark building, which offers some of the best views of the area. After exploring Reykjavik, we carried on to Stykkishólmur, a small town situated slightly east of the capital. There are two main attractions on the way to this municipality; the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and the Snaefellsjokill glacier, both of which are magnificent. No journey to Iceland is complete without visiting these places. Upon reaching Stykkishólmur, we stayed at the cosy Egilsen Hotel. Although a hotel, it has the warmth of a homestay and overlooks the stunning Stykkishólmur harbour. This area is surrounded by 3000 tiny islands and is a nesting sea bird area. You also get to see seals! 28 OCTOBER-NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 ICELAND IS A MUST-VISIT PLACE WHERE ONE CAN TRULY EXPERIENCE UNTOUCHED NATURAL BEAUTY. a mysterious waterfall. The water is pure and blue, and like every other sight in this mysterious country, this waterfall was exquisite. After, we drove back to Reykjavik and flew out of Iceland to Geneva. After this, we visited the Látrabjarg Cliffs, the breathtaking western most point in Iceland. The cliffs are 441 meters high and one can spot a beautiful variety of avifauna, including puffins, gannets, guillemots and razor bills. This area is truly a sculpture of nature, and not ruined by inhabitants. In fact, it’s only inhabited by people to maintain it. If you have a powerful set of binoculars you can also see the Arctic. We drove to the Thunderer Waterfall which is at Dynjandi, a lush valley facing the sea and an ideal picnic spot. Enroute, we visited Thingeyri, a quaint fishing village. We experienced a delicious fish buffet here, which served a huge variety of seafood; we couldn’t stop eating. After that, we went to Ísafjörður, a charming fishing village in the region. We proceeded on to Hólmavík in Strandir and then Lauger Saelingsdalur. This area consists of a series of rugged beaches and vast desolate wilderness. From Saelingsdalur we went on to Borgarfjörður to visit Hraunfoss Waterfall, known as Iceland is a must-visit place where one can truly experience untouched, natural beauty. The Icelandic people are very religious and god fearing. It’s a safe place and you can drive around at night too. It’s a very down to earth country and not very expensive. People are very friendly and go out of their way to help. If they can’t speak the language, they’ll try to explain using signs. The staple food is fish and sheep, and the cuisine is definitely not for the faint of heart, or vegetarians. One needs to be a confident driver to drive through Iceland. The terrain is tough and there’s a steep valley at one end. There are clear directions on the roads, and highways are well designed and connected. I love to drive around because when you drive you can see the interiors and enjoy the local life. There’s no fun in taking the public transport that will only take you from one end to another. Driving afforded us the flexibility of experiencing the local life of the Westfjords, that we probably wouldn’t have seen taking flights or trains. We recommend that everyone try to visit this charming, untouched country; we thoroughly enjoyed our time here. However, after losing my dad, my whole perception toward healthcare changed. It became so personal to me. Every day when I get up in the morning it energises me thinking that every decision or action I make at J&J would help positively impact the lives of several patients who are in need of proper and timely treatment. Tell us about your experience in the healthcare industry. Healthcare is actually a very emotional subject for me. In January 1993, I lost my dad to a cerebral stroke - that morning, we realised there was something wrong with him and doctors dismissed it saying that it’s just fever and that we should wait. But then we noticed that he wasn’t moving at all. By the time we took him to the hospital, he was pronounced dead. That’s the day I realised that, in spite of being in the healthcare industry, I couldn’t do much to save him, imagine what would be the situation of others who aren’t connected to healthcare at all. I had joined Johnson & Johnson (J&J) in April 1992. At that time it was all about 32 You’ve been with Johnson & Johnson for 23 years now and initiated many projects toward improving healthcare in India, one of them being the ‘Neonatal Resuscitation Project’. Can you tell us a little more about it? The infant mortality rate is quite high in India and one of the major reasons for this is birth asphyxia, an inability to breathe at birth, often termed as the golden minute after birth. It happens with approximately one out of ten babies. Birth asphyxia can also later contribute to developmental issues such as cerebral palsy and mental retardation. In India, as you may be aware, there is a lack of trained nurses and healthcare workers. Hence we tied up with IAP (Indian Academy of Paediatrics) whose members are experts in the art of resuscitation and through them we have trained 200000 allied healthcare workers mainly in the rural and semi-urban areas – this in turn has helped save so many babies in India. OCTOBER-NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 When we visited your office, we were very impressed by the support you provide to young mothers through the state-of-the-art crèche facility that was pioneered by you. Please tell us a little more about it. J&J has been always focused on having a good diversity in our work force, people from diverse cultural backgrounds, with diverse thinking and, most importantly, a diverse mix of both men and women. One of our initiatives is to encourage women’s leadership (WLI). But it was a common observation that women generally let go of their careers after giving birth and the primary reason was due to lack of family support to take care of the child, especially in a very busy city like Mumbai (my wife Swarnali being a real-life example when she quit her successful career in scientific research when our daughter Srey was born). That’s when we felt the need to have a facility for our women employees so that they could leave their kids in the crèche and continue with their jobs without any stress. With the crèche facility in the office, the mothers can see their child whenever they want. This has led to more enthusiasm and engagement among women employees and they are able to give their best for the company. Their focus and productivity has improved and they are now energised to progress their career at J&J. What are the facilities that you enjoy as a family at The Club? We just simply love The Club. Srey learnt skating, swimming and tennis here through the help of skilled coaches. After her coaching she loved going to the Waterside Café for a sandwich. Now, at seventeen her priorities have shifted a bit and she visits the Salon quite often with her mother. Whenever given the choice, Swarnali and Srey always prefer coming to The Club. I played a lot of squash and tennis and also swam. As a family we enjoyed bowling – unfortunately the bowling alley isn’t there anymore. We love Chinese food and love visiting the Oriental Wok as a family. However, I try my best to keep myself free on weekends to spend time with my family. I work very hard throughout the week, completely focused and finish all my work commitments by Friday. Weekend afternoons you may find me going through a strenuous work out at the gym to keep myself fit. A message you would like to give to young entrepreneurs? A simple message and something I strongly believe is that success is not only about being successful in a certain career or job. Be successful 24 hours of your day in everything you do. Don’t chase success. It’ll come to you if you are good in what you do and have a continuous agility towards learning. Nothing is more important than being authentic, humble and honest.
