1. Create Folders and Copy Contents
Server Setup Instructions
1. Create Folders and Copy Contents
When installing Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) on your web server, it creates a folder
called inetpub during its installation. You can install the root of IPIMS web site (ipimsroot) here.
The resources folder will hold about 7 GB of media if only Windows Media video files are
installed. An additional 7 GB of disk space is required if Real video files are also installed. You can
create this folder on a network drive or file server as long as it can be mapped from the web server.
Create the following Folders:
ipimsroot: this will contain the actual web site, about 30 MB.
resources: this will contain text and graphics, database and video files for IPIMS
system. You will need about 7 GB for Windows Media video files. An additional 7 GB
of disk space is required if Real video files are also installed.
Inside resources folder create a video folder.
Inside resources -> video folder create an ipims folder.
Inside resources -> video -> ipims folder create an asf folder and a rm folder.
Copy the following Folders and Contents:
1 From IPIMS.com Data Files CD-ROM, copy the contents of the ipimsroot folder into the
ipimsroot folder you created.\
2 From IPIMS.com Data Files CD-ROM, copy the resources -> data folder into the resources
folder you created.
3 From IPIMS.com Data Files CD-ROM, copy the resources -> database folder into the
resources folder you created.
http://192.168.1.1/ipimsroot/adtc_notes/html/setup_folders.htm (1 of 2) [02/07/2002 01:47:45 p.m.]
1. Create Folders and Copy Contents
4 Open Windows Explorer on your server and navigate to resources -> database folder you just
created. Change the attribute of all databases found here from READ-ONLY to ARCHIVE.
Otherwise you will not be able to create any new account or carry out any administrative related
tasks. You must be able to update these databases for IPIMS to function properly. Thus you need
the ARCHIVE attribute on them.
If you will be providing streaming video from Windows Media Services:
Copy all the Windows Media video file folders (e.g. FE1.1, FE1.2, etc) from each of
the seven (7) IPIMS.com VIDEO FILES (asf#) CD-ROMs, into the resources ->
video -> ipims -> asf folder you created.
If you will be providing streaming video from the Real Server:
Copy all the Windows Media video file folders (e.g. FE1.1, FE1.2, etc) from each of
the eight (8) IPIMS.com VIDEO FILES (rm#) CD-ROMs, into the resources ->
video -> ipims -> rm folder you created.
Note: Before you can view any video files from a client machine with Windows Media Player or
RealPlayer, you will need to email IPIMS Technical Support Team the IP address of your video
server(s). We will then build a set of customized video meta files for your installation. We will email
a small zipped file for you to extract and copy into resources -> video -> ipims folder on your server.
Email to: [email protected] for support.

this file for Windows NT Server 4.0
platform. ste51en.exe is preferred since it
has been used in many previous
installations.
2 Open a MS-DOS prompt and nagivate to ipimsroot -> dll directory on your server. Locate file
HWUipims.dll and type regsvr32 HWUipims.dll at the MS-DOS prompt to register this dll on
your server. This dll is used by IPIMS web site's license management tools.
3 Once your IPIMS web site is up and running, you could always go to
http://<ipimsurl>/license/licenseInfo.asp to view your current license set up. Where <ipimsurl> is
the IP address or name you assigned to IPIMS web site on your network. At the bottom of the page
there is link called Update My License, it just updates your license to your current license setup.
We will email you a new license file shortly before the old one expires.
4 Your current IPIMS License is set to expire according to your IPIMS License Agreement with

8. Configure Video Server(s)
Please follow the steps outlined below if you need to install additional video server(s) for IPIMS to
speed up video access for your regional users. The following discussion is based on the scenario
described below.
Let us assume that a company has currently installed IPIMS in its main location in Jakarta,
Indonesia. Both IPIMS web site and main video server are installed on the same physical server and
with the same IP address of 160.100.0.32. It has an IPIMS user base in Sumatra, some distance
away from its main video server in Jakarta. Please refer to the map below for geographic locations
described in this discussion.
Because of the distance from Sumatra to Jakarta, users at Sumatra cannot play IPIMS videos
smoothly at their location. So IT group at Sumatra decided to install an auxiliary video server to
solve this problem.
The first step is to obtain a set of video CDs from IPIMS Support Team at IHRDC in Boston,
United States. After installing the video server (either Windows Media Server or Real Server) and
load appropriate video files at Sumatra auxiliary video server, please email the IP address of this
auxiliary video server to [email protected] which is needed in subsequent steps. For
this discussion, let us assume the IP address of this auxiliary video server at Sumatra is 160.2.200.90
as will be shown in subsequent screen shots.
Click here for detailed instructions in installing and configuring this auxiliary video server. The
important point in setting up this auxiliary video server is to make sure the Directory Path
(Windows Media Server) or Base Path (Real Server) is set to resources -> video folder as
described in detail in the installation notes.
Let us assume that this auxiliary video server has been properly set up and configured according to
http://192.168.1.1/ipimsroot/adtc_notes/html/setup_video.htm (4 of 10) [02/07/2002 01:48:18 p.m.]

10. Secure IPIMS Administration Web Site
Type in your Windows User Name and Password on the IPIMS server to access the
administration web site. Please note that this logon screen uses Windows accounts on the server
where IPIMS is installed to authenticate user logons. Only users who have such accounts on the
server can access IPIMS administration web site. Common IPIMS users will not be able to access it
once this security feature is in place.
9 After typing in your correct Windows User Name and Password on the IPIMS server, you are at
IPIMS Administration Web Site home page which is shown below:
Possible problems with securing IPIMS administration web site:
If after applying above steps, you don't see the Enter Network Password logon screen shown up
when going to your IPIMS administration web site, it is likely that the file system of the partition
where IPIMS web site is installed does not support advanced security settings mentioned in the
steps above.
Here is how you can check what kind of file system you have:
1 Launch Windows Explorer on your server and locate the partition where IPIMS is installed in the
left pane. Note the partition is project (F:) in the screen shot.
http://192.168.1.1/ipimsroot/adtc_notes/html/setup_secure.htm (5 of 11) [02/07/2002 01:48:24 p.m.]
10. Secure IPIMS Administration Web Site
2 Right click on project (F:) and select Properties.
3 It is formatted as a NTFS partition as seen from the File system field: File system: NTFS.
http://192.168.1.1/ipimsroot/adtc_notes/html/setup_secure.htm (6 of 11) [02/07/2002 01:48:24 p.m.]
10. Secure IPIMS Administration Web Site
If the partition where IPIMS web site is installed is either FAT or FAT32 file system, skip the steps
mentioned below as they do not apply to FAT based file systems.
There are two basic file systems for Windows operating system:
FAT (File Allocation Table) file system
NTFS (NT File System) file system
FAT file system is supported by MS-DOS while NTFS is not. But FAT file system has no real
security features other than setting the attributes of a file to "hidden", "system", "archive" or "read
only". Only NTFS file system allows permissions to be set on files and directories.
Therefore if you have a FAT based file system, you cannot secure your IPIMS administration web
site by following the steps outlined at the beginning of this document. Instead, you can follow the
steps in section Alternative ways to secure your IPIMS administration web site at the end of this
document as an alternative.
Please note that it is strongly recommended that you do not try to convert an existing FAT file
http://192.168.1.1/ipimsroot/adtc_notes/html/setup_secure.htm (7 of 11) [02/07/2002 01:48:24 p.m.]
10. Secure IPIMS Administration Web Site
system partition into a NTFS file system partition as it is a highly challenging operation. You run
the risk of losing all existing data on your old FAT partition if the conversion operation is not
successful since it is a one-way process.
4 Click on Security tab shows the default settings for this partition:
5 Navigate to the ipimsroot folder where IPIMS web site is installed. Locate users folder under
ipimsroot.
http://192.168.1.1/ipimsroot/adtc_notes/html/setup_secure.htm (8 of 11) [02/07/2002 01:48:24 p.m.]
10. Secure IPIMS Administration Web Site
6 Right click on users folder and select Properties. Then click on Security tab. Make sure your
current settings match the ones shown below.
http://192.168.1.1/ipimsroot/adtc_notes/html/setup_secure.htm (9 of 11) [02/07/2002 01:48:24 p.m.]
10. Secure IPIMS Administration Web Site
Alternative ways to secure your IPIMS administration web site:
Follow the steps outlined below only if you cannot secure your IPIMS administration web site by
following the regular steps outlined at the beginning of this document.
1 Launch Windows Explorer on your server.
2 Navigate to ipimsroot folder.
3 Create a folder with a difficult-to-guess name such as zch42t at the root of ipimsroot folder.
4 Copy all files and folders from the root of users folder to the root of your newly created zch42t
folder or any name you gave to it.
5 Delete the file index.asp from the root of users folder. You are effectively deleting the entry point
into this folder when someone is trying to access it from a browser.
6 Open admin folder at the root of users folder.
http://192.168.1.1/ipimsroot/adtc_notes/html/setup_secure.htm (10 of 11) [02/07/2002 01:48:24 p.m.]
10. Secure IPIMS Administration Web Site
7 Delete the following files from the admin folder:
cDetail.asp, cDetailFS.asp, cDetailNB.asp, indexADM.asp, indexADMNB.asp
Again what you are doing here is removing the entry points into the admin folder from browser
access.
8 Now you need to remember that your IPIMS administration web site is located at:
http://<ipimsurl>/zch42t
or whatever folder name you have created earlier. You cannot use http://<ipimsurl>/users anymore
to access IPIMS administration web site because the entry points have been removed from the users
folder.
9 Please note that you cannot delete the users folder with all of its files and subfolders completely
as some of the files contained in it are being used by other parts of the IPIMS system. If you simply
delete the users folder, you are very likely to find some areas of IPIMS system will not work
anymore.

SMTP Server Setup Instructions (Optional)
SMTP Server Setup Instructions (Optional)
If you are going to utilize Active Server Page (ASP) email capabilities in IPIMS system installed on
your intranet, please follow the steps outlined below to setup SMTP server on your IPIMS server.
The SMTP is automatically installed with IIS-4 and IIS-5 and is automatically set to run. Use this
test to check to see if the SMTP is running properly. You will need the IP address of the intranet
site or the machine name of the site to run this test. During our testing, email was received in less
than 5 seconds. This may be different for you depending upon the speed of your corporate mail
gateway.
If you are experiencing troubles with your SMTP service, please first check to make sure that it is
running. You can see if it is by looking in your IIS MMC settings on the server in question.
At minimum we recommend the following settings on your SMTP server. To change these go to the
IIS MMC and right click for properties. Here are the screen shots.

Notice in the above screen, there is an email address [email protected], you can change that to the
postmaster address at your company. If you are only using this SMTP for IPIMS intranet site, you
could add the postmaster and still leave the [email protected]. With this configuration, we can better
address any issues that you may have.

Installing and Configuring Windows Media Server and Real Server
Create Folders and Copy Video Files to Server:
...back to Installing and Configuring IPIMS Video Servers and Players
Follow the steps below to create folders by using Windows Explorer on the video server that IPIMS
video files will be installed:
●
The resources folder will hold about 6.0 GB of media if only Windows Media video files are
installed. An additional 6.5 GB of disk space is required if Real video files are also installed.
You can create this folder on a network drive or file server as long as it can be mapped from
the video server.
Create the following Folders:
Inside resources folder create a video folder.
Inside resources -> video folder create an ipims folder.
Inside resources -> video -> ipims folder create an asf folder and a rm folder.
If you will be providing streaming video from Windows Media Services:
Copy all the Windows Media video file folders (e.g. FE1.1, FE1.2, etc) from each of
the seven (7) IPIMS.com VIDEO FILES (asf#) CD-ROMs, into the resources ->
video -> ipims -> asf folder you created.
If you will be providing streaming video from the Real Server:
Copy all the Windows Media video file folders (e.g. FE1.1, FE1.2, etc) from each of
the eight (8) IPIMS.com VIDEO FILES (rm#) CD-ROMs, into the resources ->
video -> ipims -> rm folder you created.
Note: Before you can view any video files from a client machine with Windows Media Player or
RealPlayer, you will need to email IPIMS Technical Support Team the IP address of your video
server(s). We will then build a set of customized video meta files for your video server installation.
We will then load these meta files onto our www.ipims.com website hosted in Boston, United
States.

Installing and Configuring Windows Media Server and Real Server
General Observation on Using Real Server and Real Player in Near Future:
...back to Installing and Configuring IPIMS Video Servers and Players
As RealNetworks makes the free version of its Real Player and Real Server programs difficult to
find on its website and provides limited support for them, it is suggested to stay with Windows
Media Player and Windows Media Server on the Windows platform.
Windows Media Player is part of Microsoft Windows Operating System. Windows Media Server
comes standard with its 2000 family of server operating systems. This makes the installation and
update process easier from both system administrators and end users.
One limitation to keep in mind is that Windows Media Player and Server are not available (at least
at this time) on the UNIX platform. So if your end users need access to IPIMS system from UNIX
workstations, you need to install Real Server on either a dedicated Windows or a UNIX video
server.
We suggest that you try installing Real Server on a Windows video server as your first option. Since
it is relatively easy to support Real Server on the Windows platform, you should only install Real
Server on a UNIX video server as your last resort if your IT department does not have the resources
to support Real Server on the Windows platform.
