GEOLOGICAL AND ROCK-GEOCHEMICAL SURVEY REPORT ON THE LOLJUH PROPERTY NORANDA MINES LIMITED INTRODUCTION: The Laljuh Property r e f e r r e d t o i n t h i s r e p o r t i s located approximately 28 m i l e s south of Smithers, B r i t i s h Columbia a t t h e headw a t e r s o f Loljuh Creek i n t h e e a s t e r n p a r t o f t h e Telkwa Range (See Fig.1). Access t o t h e property i s by h e l i c o p t e r from t h e Smithers h e l i p o r t t o a landing s i t e w i t h i n t h e claim group. The p r o p e r t y c o n s i s t s of 11 contiguous mineral c l a i m s i n t h e Omineca Mining Division of B r i t i s h Columbia (See Fig. 2). Control f o r t h i s work was provided by an e a r l i e r e s t a b l i s h e d c h a i n and compass g r i d , topographic mapping by Lockwood Survey Corporation from B. C. Government a i r photographs, and t h e a i r photographs themselves. The main a r e a of t h e claims i s l o c a t e d on a bench-like s t r u c t u r e w i t h an e l e v a t i o n of 4,000' t o 4,400' and i s bounded t o t h e south-east by t h e v a l l e y o f Loljuh Creek and t o t h e n o r t h by a peak of 5,600'. f o r e s t e d , b u t t h e r e a r e many swamps, and drainage is poor. 5,000'. The a r e a i s w e l l The t r e e l i n e i s a t Depth of overburden near t h e d r i l l - s i t e s averages e l e v e n f e e t but may i n c r e a s e t o t h e south-east. Rock exposure is mainly confined t o a l p i n e ridges. StmMARY: The claim group i s u n d e r l a i n by a n d e s i t i c and d a c i t i c t u f f s , flows and greywackes o f Middle Lower J u r a s s i c age belonging t o t h e Hazelton Group. These rocks have been intruded w i t h i n t h e claim group by a monzonite s t o c k of p o s s i b l e Upper Cretaceous o r E a r l y T e r t i a r y age, and by small bodies of q u a r t z d i o r i t e and f e l d s p a r porphyry. Associated w i t h t h e i n t r u s i o n s i s a magnetite h a l o o c c u r r i n g i n t h e v o l c a n i c rocks bordering t h e igneous c o n t a c t , and a d i s c o n t i n u o u s zone of p y r i t i z a t i o n i n t h e rocks on both s i d e s of t h e contact. Copper m i n e r a l i z a t i o n i s a s s o c i a t e d w i t h t h e p y r i t e , b u t o c c u r s a l s o , though t o a l e s s e r e x t e n t , i n t h e i n t r u s i v e rocks. GEO LL)G ICAL SETTING : The e a s t e r n p a r t of t h e Telkwa Range i s u n d e r l a i n by a n d e s i t f c and d a c i t i c v o l c a n o c l a s t i c rocks w i t h minor sediments belonging t o t h e Middle Lower J u r a s s i c s e c t i o n o f t h e Hazelton Group. Red h e m a t i t i c t u f f s and t u f f a c e o u s b r e c c i a s , commonly with o r t h o c l a s e v e i n i n g , a r e t y p i c a l . i s i n t h e p r e h n i t e o r e p i d o t e f a c i e s . (Richards, 1972). Regional metamorphism Emplaced i n t h e v o l c a n i c s a r e s t o c k s of Upper Cretaceous o r E a r l y T e r t i a r y age (Armstrong, 1944). Commonly t h e v o l c a n i c rocks bordering on t h e i n t r u s i o n s become d a r k e r due t o a n enrichment i n magnetite. ( ~ r o w n , 1967; Richards, 1972). GEOIOGY: Approximately h a l f of t h e a r e a covered by t h e Loljuh claim group i s u n d e r l a i n by rocks o f v o l c a n i c o r i g i n ; t h e balance by p l u t o n i c rocks. For d e s c r i p t i v e purposes t h e v o l c a n i c rocks have been divided i n t o three units: Unit t'A'' occurring i n a s i n g l e outcrop near t h e western corner of t h e p r o p e r t y , c o n s i s t s o f red and green p y r o c l a s t i c rocks, The red colour i s a t t r i b u t e d t o t h e presence o f abundant hematite and t h e green c a l o u r t o t h e presence o f c h l o r i t e , Unit tfBts, comprisi% dense greenish-black p y r o c l a s t i c rocks and minor u n d i f f e r e n t i a t e d amygdaloidal a n d e s i t e s , is considered a n a l t e r e d equiv a l e n t o f Unit ISA". It u n d e r l i e s t h e north-western and f a r s o u t h - e a s t e r n s i d e s o f t h e claim area. The e f f e c t s of c o n t a c t metamorphism a r e i n d i c a t e d i n t h i s u n i t by t h e presence of magnetite r a t h e r t h a n hematite and weak t o i n t e n s e h o r n f e l s a l t e r a t i o n . Epidote and o r t h o c l a s e v e i n s and replacement masses a r e common; however, t h e s e may i n p a r t r e f l e c t t h e e f f e c t s o f r e g i o n a l metamorphism. Unit "Cn l o c a t e d i n t h e n o r t h e r n c o r n e r o f t h e p r o p e r t y , c o n s i s t s of ! i a s e c t i o n o f well->bedded v o l c a n i c sediments, commonly a medium t o c o a r s e g r a i n e d greywacke, which i n hand specimen appears f r e s h and unaltered. U n i t s A, B, and C c o r r e l a t e w i t h t h e Middle Lower J u r a s s i c s e c t i o n o f t h e Hazelton Group found l o c a l l y and a r e l i k e l y t h e "Red Volcanic" u n i t a s d e s c r i b e d by Tipper (Tipper, 1971). The p l u t o n i c rocks comprise t h r e e u n i t s : Unit "Dtt, 3,000' a medium-grained monzonite, extends a s a s t o c k about a c r o s s i n t o t h e c e n t r a l p a r t of t h e p r o p e r t y from t h e north-east. The composition i s 40% p l a g i o c l a s e , 25% o r t h o c l a s e , 25% hornblende, and 10% b i o t i t e . The i n t r u s i v e i s s l i g h t l y p o r p h y r i t i c with r e s p e c t t o p l a g i o c l a s e . The horn- b l e n d e o c c u r s g e n e r a l l y a s anhedral masses, but may a l s o occur a s f i n e needles. Unit "Et* i s a minor outcropping of f e l d s p a r porphyry i n t h e western c o n t a c t zone o f t h e monzonite, and may be e i t h e r a dyke o r a v e r y small i n t r u s i o n . The rock h a s a somewhat v a r i a b l e composition, b u t a t y p i c a l sample contained: 35% p a r t i a l l y resorped phenocrysts of p l a g i o c l a s e , about 2 llgn i n diameter, 30% f i n e - g r a i n e d mafic minerals, 35% groundmass, and a minor amount o f p y r i t e and chalcopyrite. Unit "Fit i s found o n l y i n diamond d r i l l h o l e s number 2 and 4, which a r e s i t u a t e d o n t h e western c o n t a c t zone o f t h e monzonite stock. The p e t r o - g r a p h i c name o f t h e rock is u n c e r t a i n s i n c e i t s t r u e n a t u r e i s obscured conside r a b l y by o r t h o c l a s e , q u a r t z , and p y r i t e v e i n i n g and replacement, however, a t e n t a t i v e i d e n t i f i c a t i o n i s fine-grained q u a r t z d i o r i t e , The monzonite s t o c k was mapped by Armstrong a s being o f Upper Cretaceous o r E a r l y T e r t i a r y age (Armstrong, 1944). Except f o r a dyke of u n i t "F" i n t h e v o l c a n i c rocks t h e r e i s no d i r e c t f i e l d evidence t o i n d i c a t e t h e r e b t i v e age o f t h e two minor p l u t o n i c units. A s e t of w e l l developed j o i n t s w i t h an average spacing of 5 cm and an a t t i t u d e o f 652 10/90 is found i n u n i t s "B" and "Erl. This set a l s o occurs weakly i n t h e monzonite. P y r i t e veining i s common, though s p o t t y , i n outcrop near t h e c o n t a c t , but i n p l a c e s t h e p y r i t i z a t i o n i s h u f f i c i e n t l y i n t e n s e t o have developed i n t h e matrix of t h e rock. P y r i t e content up t o 10% was noted. The a t t i t u d e o f t h e p y r i t e v e i n s f r e q u e n t l y c o i n c i d e s w i t h t h a t o f t h e above mentioned j o i n t s . The a v a i l a b l e geological evidence favours t h e idea t h a t t h e c o n t a c t between t h e v o l c a n i c s and t h e monzonite u n i t should b e d e t e c t a b l e by a magnetometer survey. The writer,therefore,concurs w i t h t h e conclusion drawn by Dirom regarding i t s l o c a t i o n (Dirom, 1969). ROCK-GEO CHEP41STRY Chemical a n a l y s i s of rock c h i p s sawn from rock samples obtained from t h e 1971 survey i n d i c a t e d t h a t a rock-geochemical survey might be h e l p f u l i n i n t e r p r e t i n g t h e copper soil-geochemical anomaly l o c a t e d p a r a l l e l t o and west o f t h e b a s e l i n e between l i n e 8 n o r t h and l i n e 28 south. As a result, s i x t e e n samples were obtained i n 1972 w i t h t h e rnajority.from t h i s area. The sampling technique involved d e s i g n a t i n g one o r two a r e a s on an outcrop t o be sampled, and t h e n c o l l e c t i n g s i x t e e n rock c h i p s of approximately t h e same s i z e from random l o c a t i o n s w i t h i n each area. The samples were placed i n 8" X 13" sample bags o f 6 m i l p l a s t i c , on which were marked an i d e n t i f i c a t i o n 0 number w i t h an i n d e l i b l e f e l t pen. A 1 1 samples were submitted t o Core Laboratories-Canada, Ltd. and analyzed f o r copper, molybdenum, z i n c and s i l v e r by N. Garner. The samples were crushed and p u l v e r i z e d t o -100 mesh, 1.0 g o f each sample were weighed o u t i n t o a t e s t t u b e c o n t a i n i n g 5 m l o f 1:4 p e r c h l o r i c n i t r i c a c i d and d i g e s t e d i n a water-bath f o r 4 hours a t 1 8 0 ~ ~ A. f t e r cooling each sample was d i l u t e d t o 15 m l with a s o l u t i o n o f A l C 1 3 g i v i n g a r e s u l t a n t c o n c e n t r a t i o n of 1%AlC13. The s o l u t i o n s were t h e n analyzed f o r copper, molybdenum, z i n c and s i l v e r on a J a r r e l l - A s h Atom-Sorb Model spectrophotometer. The s t a n d a r d s used were d i l u t e d s o l u t i o n s from prepared 1,000 ppm F i s h e r s t a n d a r d s and a c i d c o n c e n t r a t i o n s were t h e same f o r both sample and standard. The rock-geochemical r e s u l t s have been l i s t e d i n Table 1 and C:; shown o n Fig, 2. These r e s u l t s p l u s t h o s e from d r i l l i n g r e v e a l t h a t w i t h i n t h e soil-geochemical anomaly, bedrock i s f r e q u e n t l y anomalous i n copper, In t a k i n g i n t o c o n s i d e r a t i o n drainage p a t t e r n s and depth o f overburden, it i s concluded t h a t i n t h i s i n s t a n c e , a t l e a s t , t h e s o i l geochemical anomaly r e f l e c t s t h e copper c o n t e n t of t h e under-lying bedrock. Molybdenum, z i n c and s i l v e r rock-geochemical v a l u e s show no s i g n i f i c a n t trends. ECONOMIC GEOLOGY: Copper has two modes of occurrence on t h i s property. It o c c u r s a s c h a l c o p y r i t e a s s o c i a t e d with t h e p y r i t e m i n e r a l i z a t i o n s t r a d d l i n g t h e c o n t a c t zone o f t h e monzonite stock, and i n t e r s t i t i a l l y a s c h a l c o p y r i t e i n t h e monzonite. The a r e a o f t h e soil-geochemical anomaly which c o i n c i d e s w i t h p a r t o f t h e a r e a o f p y r i t i z a t i o n , has been i n v e s t i g a t e d by d r i l l i n g , and by t h e p r e s e n t g e o l o g i c a l and rock-geochemical survey. It is concluded t h a t t h i s m i n e r a l i z a t i o n i s e r r a t i c and n o t o f economic i n t e r e s t . The q u a l i t y o f i n f o r m a t i o n a v a i l a b l e on t h e second mode of o c c u r r e n c e i s low. Topographically t h e monzonite i n t r u s i o n i s h i g h l y r e c e s s i v e and o n l y a few o u t c r o p s a r e a v a i l a b l e . Furthermore, over- burden t e n d s t o be deeper, t h u s r e d u c i n g t h e e f f e c t i v e n e s s o f s o i l geochemistry. S i n c e t h i s t y p e o f i n t r u s i o n i s p o t e n t i a l l y a good h o s t f o r economic concen- i I t r a t i o n s o f copper, and s i n c e b o t h t h e s t o c k and t h e a r e a s u r r o u n d i n g it a r e geochernically anomalous w i t h r e s p e c t t o copper, i t i s recommended t h a t f u r t h e r work, such a s an induced p o l a r i z a t i o n survey and/or t r e n c h i n g b e c a r r i e d o u t .
