Lunenburg County
Overview
Lunenburg County, on the south shore of Nova Scotia, is home to 47,565 residents. Towns and villages extend along a
deeply etched coastline of bays, islands and beaches. Inland, a gently rolling countryside of mixed forestlands and scattered
farms is well drained by a network of lakes and small rivers. Thanks to the Atlantic’s moderating influence, the climate is
relatively mild.
Tranquil seaside locations, architectural heritage, and excellent quality of life draw tourists, seasonal residents, and retirees
to communities like Mahone Bay, Chester, and Lahave. Yet, most of Lunenburg County lies within an hour’s drive of the
largest urban centre in Atlantic Canada – a major advantage for light manufacturing and service sector investment.
Lunenburg County has a well diversified economy. Locally manufactured products extend from processed seafood to tires,
medical products, and aerospace components. Call centres and tourism-based enterprises complement a mature mix of local
private and public services employment.
Bridgewater, the County’s largest town (population 7,350), is a manufacturing, retail, and services centre. Michelin Tire,
Nova Scotia’s largest manufacturing employer, is a major presence here. Bridgewater is also a developing call centre
location.
The Town of Lunenburg, home of the schooner Bluenose and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has long been a leading fishery
port and seafood industry centre. Today it is also an international supplier of composite components for the aerospace
industry.
The Lunenburg-Queens Regional Development Authority(LQRDA) works in partnership with local municipalities, provincial
and federal government officials, and the private sector to promote economic development in Lunenburg County.
