Condition Assessment (CA) and
Asset Life Extension Management (ALEM)
CA
&
ALEM
Asset Condition Assessment (CA) provides asset owners with important information to optimize
the operation and maintenance of their assets. CA also provides valuable information to RCM
facilitators and team members to optimize RCM analyses (using real time data) and validate the
analysis recommendations. The CA may actually determine that an RCM analysis will not “fix
the problem” (maintenance cannot ensure functions and/or performance standards are met).
Asset replacement or refurbishment may be the best failure management strategy given certain
criteria. CA guides review groups to reach the best failure management strategy given the asset’s
condition at the time.
Aladon recommends that a condition assessment is performed on systems and
assets that have been in service for a long time, in some cases still operating
beyond its useful life (as specified by the manufacturers).

Aladon’s Condition Assessment methodology consists of two distinct processes,
the first being a qualitative assessment (through observation and interviews)
and secondly a quantitative assessment (through analysis - data driven). The
two processes could be done simultaneously (two groups) or subsequent of each
other or done individually as stand alone assessments.
The remaining life is “calculated” using the results from both processes. The two
processes could have equal weighting (assessment based on 50% input from each
process) or one process could “weigh” more based on the findings, availability and
quality of the data and accessibility to the assets.
Qualitative Assessment
The process of qualitative assessment entails the physical inspection of the asset.
The criteria used for the condition assessment vary depending on the type and
complexity of the asset. For each asset type, the assessment team (consisting
of cross disciplines) will develop a list of questions specific to the asset. The
assessment is performed using the criteria developed for the assessment, physical
checks, performance tests (if required), interviews and information from O&M.
Quantitative Assessment
The quantitative assessment deals with hard facts or evidence and typical
quantitative assessment criteria includes: age of the assets (install date), duty
cycles (operating cycles), loading, operating limits, number of trips and protective
devices activated within certain periods, operating standards (design parameters
and safety margins), maintenance records and compliance, major overhauls past
and future (if any), modification and upgrades (if any).
The reviewer will be able to determine and adjust the remaining life based
on the physical condition of the asset. The basis for the adjustment is the
2012 International Infrastructure Management Manual description of asset
condition criteria.

Risk Based Inspection (RBI3TM)
RBI is a risk assessment and management tool that addresses an area of risk management
not completely addressed in other organizational risk management efforts such as
process hazards analyses (PHA), IOWs or Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM). The
RBI process is focused on maintaining the mechanical integrity of pressure equipment
items and minimizing the risk of loss of containment due to deterioration while the RCM
process is used to determine the maintenance requirements of any physical asset in its
operating context.

RBI3 is a “zero-base”approach for assisting reliability engineers to manage and
address risks related to unanticipated failures of static equipment, i.e. pipes, tanks,
valve bodies, pump and compressor housings and pressure vessels. RBI3 is fully
integrated with our other risk based approaches: Condition Assessment, RCM3
and RCFA. In simple terms, if you use one, you should use the other...
RBI is fully integrated with RCM3 and extends reliability thinking to include risk
based solutions for every asset in your organization. RBI3 places reliability and
asset integrity mainstream with organizations’ risk management systems and
policies. Furthermore, our methodologies underpin API 580 and the International
Standards for Physical Asset Management (ISO 55000), Risk Management
(ISO 31000), Life-cycle costing techniques (ISO 15663: Part 1) and Productionassurance (ISO 20815).
The principal benefits of using Aladon’s approach are:
•
Single integrated solution for all the assets on site
•
Support international standards and regulations
•
Increased reliability and asset integrity
•
Improved compliance
•
Lower risk of critical equipment not being covered by RCM or RBI
•
Consistent approach - common language and common set of values
•
Less time to analyze and assess equipment reliability and integrity
•
No duplication or omission of critical assets
•
Improved safety and environmental integrity
•
Reduce costs of ownership

Recommended Participants:
• Design engineers
• Operations
• Maintenance
• Asset owners
• OEMs
• Vendors
• Suppliers
When the detail design, procurement, installation and commissioning are complete,
organizations then realize whether or not their business objectives are met.
Throughout the design and project delivery process, the focus is “on time” and
“on budget”. Whether or not actual business objectives are met is only measured
at the end of the project, sometimes after handover and startup. RCD considers
these objectives from the start and avoid costly modifications and change orders.
Our RCD methodology involves all the stakeholders that will be involved in the life of the
asset or facility - owners, stakeholders, designers, process engineers, operations,
maintenance, vendors and equipment manufacturers. It does so by defining
the business objectives for the new facility or asset right at the start and ends
by simulating real life scenarios and optimization to ensure these objectives are
met (with highest reliability and lowest cost).
The following steps are considered as part of our RCD process:
• Define business objectives (safety, environmental, operational, quality, etc.)
• Create baseline design required to meet user requirements (done by others)
Schedule of Activities:
• Define the operating context (create real life scenarios/operating conditions)
• RCD Overview & Training
• Define business objectives
• Engineering Design
• Drawing
• Operating Context
• FMECA (RCA)
• Modeling
• Simulation Optimization
• Identify critical assets and systems (defined by business objectives)
• Perform FMECA on critical assets
• Collect asset reliability data and information
• Build reliability model and simulate base line design (using real life scenario)
• Review and optimize through alternatives and revised strategies

Benefits
• Continuous improvement
and sustainability of reliability
program
• Reduced physical and
economical risks
• Increased reliability and
availability of your assets
• Alignment with international
standards i.e. ISO 55000
• Less repeat failures and
increased uptime
• Improved communication
• Knowledge retention and
management
Do you have assets or systems with repeat failures or failures which have serious
consequences affecting safety, the environment or operational capability? These must
be avoided (or prevented from happening again) to ensure the organizational goals are
met. Whether you are in the public or private sector, your assets/systems must perform
reliably so that you can deliver services or products to customers and citizens. RCFA
ensures continuous improvement of your reliability program through reviewing failures
that result in consequences which exceed the organization’s tolerable risk threshold.
The RCFA process can be applied pro-actively or reactively (after the failure
happened). We analyze asset history, identify the root causes of equipment failure,
and develop maintenance practices to prevent these failures from occurring
or reccurring. The RCFA process is fully integrated with the RCM process and
information (failure modes and effects) are transferable between worksheets. This
limits duplication and wasting of resources. It focuses on preserving the functions
your assets/systems perform rather than preserving the equipment itself. We
determine the right failure management strategies to ensure your assets/systems
function the way you want them to function-reliabily and efficiently.
RCFA will:
• Improve knowledge and understanding of important failures that should be
avoided, increasing asset reliability and reduce risk
• Improve the reliability program through providing the feedback loop for reviewing
failure modes and effects - update the RCM database
• Decrease safety and environmental risk stemming from equipment breakdowns
• Review and validate the maintenance program - failure modes and effects
RCFA Services & Training
• RCFA Executive Overview
• RCFA Introductory Course
• Aladon Facilitation

Do you have assets or systems prone to frequent breakdowns? Are equipement
failures in the way of you meeting your organization’s goals? Whether you’re in
the public or private sector, your assets/systems must perform reliably so that
you can deliver services or products to customers and citizens. Aladon and The
Aladon Network can help you secure this reliablity by developing and assisting
you in implementing a Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM2) program.
The Aladon Network uses the systematic and and robust RCM2 process to develop
and/or optimize your asset management efforts. Asset performance data and history
provide the information to identify the root causes of equipment failure, and allows the
RCM teams to develop failure management strategies to prevent these failures from
occurring. This consequence driven approach differs from traditional maintenance efforts.
It focuses on preserving the functions your assets/systems rather than preserving the
equipment itself. We determine the right failure management strategies to ensure your
assets/systems function the way you want them to function - safe, reliable and efficient.
RCM2 will:
• Improve asset/system performance, increase reliability and reduce risk
• Help you realize a greater return on your infrastructure and maintenance investment
through consistent, dependable operations
• Decrease safety and environmental risk stemming from equipment breakdowns
• Eliminate unnecessary preventive tasks saving money and staff time by doing the
right task at the right time
• Improve knowledge management and retention - more people learn more about
the equipment
• Improve overall communication in your organization
• Improved understanding and management of protective devices
RCM2 asks seven questions about your assets:
• What are its functions (what do its users want it to do)?
• In what ways can it fail (functional failures)?
•
•
•
•
•
What causes it to fail (failure modes)?
What happens when it fails (failure effects)?
Does it matter if it fails (consequences of failure)?
Can anything be done to predict or prevent the failure?
What do we do if we cannot predict or prevent the failure?
RCM2 will develop the best failure management strategy for preserving
all your assets’ functions in a specific operating context.

AladonTM and its associates have developed an integrated Risk and Reliability
Management Methodology and associated processes to ensure sustainable reliability
improvement for all operations and maintenance. RCM3 is the core or center from
which these other processes hinge and they consist of Root Cause Failure Analysis
(RCFA), Reliability Centered Design (RCD), Risk Based Inspection (RBI3TM) and
Condition Assessment (CA). These methodologies support the International Asset
and Risk Management standards ISO 55001 and ISO 31000.
RCM3 is an extension to our robust RCM2 process. RCM3 focuses on preserving asset or
system functions while reducing or eliminating physical and economic risks. RCM3
is enabling organizations to bring reliability mainstream with their asset management
(ISO 55000) and risk management (ISO 31000) systems. RCM3 is fully compliant with the
SAE standards and actually goes beyond though addressing the international
asset management standard’s requirements full on.
RCM3 is a process used to define the minimum required safe amount of maintenance,
engineering and other failure management policies to ensure a tolerable level of safety,
environmental integrity and cost effective operational capability (given a certain
operating context) as specified in the organization’s asset management standard.

RCM3 is an extension to our robust RCM2 process. RCM3 focuses on preserving asset
or system functions while reducing or eliminating physical and econimic risks. RCM3
is allowing organizations to bring reliability mainstream with their asset management
(ISO 55000) and risk management (ISO 31000) systems. RCM3 is fully compliant to the
SAE standards and actually goes beyond, though addressing the international asset
management standard’s requirements full on.
RCM3 does so in the following steps:
1. Define the operating context (how the equipment is being used)?
2. What are its functions (what does the user want)?
3. What are the failed states (total failure and partial failure)?
4. What can cause it to fail (failure causes and mechanisms)?
5. What happens when it fails (failure effects)?
6. Does it matter if it fails (failure consequences)?
7. What are the associated risks (physical and economic)?
8. Can anything be done proactively to reduce the risk to a tolerable level?
9. What if we cannot find ways to proactively reduce the risk to a tolerable level?
A comprehensive software program called “Reliability Engineering Workbench”
supports the RCM3 and RCFA processes to allow for the seamless integration and
continuous improvement through proactive work identification and reactive root
cause failure analysis and defect elimination.

RCM2 Introductory Course
This course provides a comprehensive
introduction to RCM2 and its principles. It is
intended for those who are interested in
understanding what RCM2 is and how it can be
applied to defi ne technically based
maintenance and reliability programs.
CONTRIBUTE TO A
RELIABILITY
INITIATIVE IN AN
EFFECTIVE AND
EFFICIENT MANNER.
The application of RCM2 challenges the traditional
approach to equipment maintenance by moving you
from a breakdown and repair mentality to a culture of
asset management. Not only does it revolutionize
views about maintenance but also about how
maintenance, operations and engineering should
work together to drive asset performance. RCM2
leads to a far broader and deeper understanding of
the organization’s assets and provides a structured
way to formally capture and transfer that knowledge
to the rest of the asset stakeholders.
This introduction to RCM2 redefines your
understanding of maintenance management and will
completely transform the way that maintenance and
operations people view the development of
maintenance programs and their roles and
responsibilities in that process. This course applies
best practices in answering the seven questions of
RCM2 using a real life, case study approach. The
participants will explore the techniques required to
define a maintenance program in a logical and
structured way that recognizes the hidden, safety,
environmental and operating consequences of
failure.
By Participating You Will
• Develop a greater awareness of the importance
of asset failure consequences and how to

Performance Coaching
RELIABILITY - THE JOURNEY
TO OPERATIONAL
EXCELLENCE.
Competency in the application of RCM2 cannot be
achieved with classroom training sessions alone. A
combination of classroom theory and practical
application is necessary to be capable of developing
from awareness and knowledge to competency. This
progression is essential in providing facilitators with
the understanding and skills required to apply these
practices efficiently and effectively.

It is highly recommended that facilitator candidates
receive performance coaching on RCM analysis to
prepare them for the technical audit and the
certification examination. Performance coaching by a
Certified Aladon Practitioner provides the feedback
and continuous improvement required to develop
competency and insure the quality of delivery
necessary to achieve certification status within
Aladon. During an analysis, a Certified Aladon
Practitioner participates in the analysis session
providing ongoing feedback to the facilitator. Upon
completion of the analysis the practitioner generates
a formal written report of the facilitator’s progress and
performance, as well as a technical assessment of
the analysis.
ch
Certification Examination
Remote Coaching
The certification exam is the final step in
achieving Aladon Certified Facilitator status and is
administered online by Aladon. The candidate will
be tested on the fundamentals and application of
RCM2 in a multiple choice/long answer format.
The candidate must pass the technical audit
portion of the program as a prerequisite to taking
the exam.
Although onsite coaching is always the preferred
option, remote coaching is available when
appropriate. This involves virtual attendance, as well
as offsite coaching and auditing by the practitioner
using technologies that are readily available. The
facilitator and the client organization benefit from our
expertise while minimizing costs. The remote
coaching would typically include the following
activities:
Onsite Coaching
Onsite coaching provides the greatest opportunity
for competency development as an Aladon
Certified Practitioner is able to impart his/her
years of experience and expertise while
interacting one-on-one with the facilitator. In this
way the facilitator’s skill development and
learning curve is accelerated and results assured.
Optimally, the practitioner participates in the
following activities:
• In person for the duration of the first analysis,
• In person for part or all of the second and third
analyses and any further analyses as required.
• An Aladon Certified Practitioner ‘sits in’ on the
facilitation session using a web camera or views a
recorded video and assesses the facilitator’s skills
against the 45 competencies.
• The practitioner conducts a 2 hour off site review
and discussion of the day’s results with the
facilitator at the end of each session using online
meeting technology.
• A formal written assessment/feedback report
is provided following each coached analysis.
Contact Carlo Odoardi, Aladon Network Member, for
information regarding onsite or remote performance
coaching and technical audits: 905 536-0865 or

EXP Professional SoftwareEnabling Technology for
Reliability
EXP Professional is the leading reliability strategy
development software. First and foremost, EXP
Professional enables the documentation of an RCM2
analysis thereby speeding up the overall facilitation
process and eliminating the paperwork. EXP goes a
step further than other RCM software toolkits by
offering complementary functionality to support a risk
based approach to determining where to focus your
efforts across your entire equipment base.
Understanding the business risk of safety,
environmental, operating and non-operating
consequences helps you determine where RCM2 is
most appropriate and helps you develop a roadmap
for improvement that is technically based and
defensible. Your analysis will not end up in a binder
sitting on a shelf or charts hanging on the wall. EXP
eliminates the paperwork and allows you to show
your analysis, results and action plans to your
management team immediately after the facilitation
session.
EXP Professional goes beyond traditional RCM
toolkits. EXP Pro supports a full suite of
integrated modules to help you define a complete
reliability improvement strategy.
Designed with input from The Aladon Network
Practitioners, and developed by the leading
enterprise software developers at Bentley
(previously Ivara), EXP Professional includes
modules for:
• Asset Hierarchy - EXP Pro supports an unlimited
multi-level hierarchy of assets and asset
information. Use your existing CMMS/EAM
structure to align your reliability results with your
work management system or use EXP Pro to build
the hierarchy to your requirements.
• Asset Prioritization - EXP Pro provides all the tools
required to facilitate an effective asset prioritization
to help determine where to focus your efforts. Let
Ivara EXP Pro do the calculations to assess the
risk and consequences of failure to determine the
assets that should be tackled first for reliability
improvement
• Reliability Strategy Selection - This decision
support tool uses a risk-based methodology build
into a wizard like application in EXP Professional to
objectively determine which assets require RCM2
and which are suitable for MTA, enabling a balance
between these two approaches.
• RCM2 - EXP Pro provides the tools that allow an
RCM2 facilitator to quickly and easily document an
RCM analysis-speeding up the overall RCM
process. With EXP, the facilitator will not be
distracted from the facilitation role as the software
guides them through the process. EXP Pro also
supports complex calculations for failure finding
interval (FFI) and incorporates a graphical, fully
integrated RCM2 decision diagram to determine
the appropriate action plan for each failure mode.
