The Inspiration For Sportsline
BY: STEVE SCHNEIDER, WAFB SPORTS DIRECTOR
I’ve kept the tape from that 1989 newscast all these
years as a reminder. Now heading into the 25TH
season of Sportsline Friday Nite, I believe it’s only
fitting to pay tribute to the men (and their schools
and teams) on that particular video tape and the
others before it, who were the inspiration for us to
expand our Friday night coverage of high school
football beyond the boundaries of a regular newscast.
Texas Southern coach Darrell Asberry has five
players on his roster from Sportsline area schools
this season, and their high schools like Scotlandville,
Zachary, Brusly and McKinley have been featured on our show hundreds of times during the four years they
played football. However, when Asberry himself was a player at Southern Lab, which won the 1986 LHSAA Class
1A title the year before he arrived to play for Carl Porter, the Kittens were only shown a handful of times, even
though they played a 16-week season counting a jamboree and five rounds of playoff games! But the man who
went on to become Jackson’s State’s MVP in 1994 as a player and offensive coordinator for the nation’s No.1
offense eight years later, was part of a generation that showed us we needed Sportsline, even though his senior
year (1990) was the only season he ever appeared on the 30-minute program, when it was still in its infancy.
Episcopal’s Travis Bourgeois has been a coach for 20 of Sportsline’s 25 seasons, but remembers what it was
like as the quarterback of Bucky Mistretta’s great Ascension Catholic teams that included the state’s all-time
leading rusher at the time Germaine Williams. “I was kind of jealous really,” Bourgeois said with a laugh as
he recalled coming back to the area after a baseball career with UAB ended in 1994. “You guys kind of set the
bar. I can remember us meeting at someone’s house and telling relatives to tune in and watch,” said the ACHS
alumnus, who admits it’s just as fun to watch for other players and teams. “I wish we could have seen video
every Friday night of Doug Coleman and Brian Mitchell ‘the Human Highlight Film’. Now they’ve got a helicopter
flying J.T.Curtis back to do the show they have in New Orleans,” Bourgeois said with another laugh.
Of course the Plaquemine quarterback who went on to stardom with the Ragin Cajuns and the NFL where he
produced over 23,000 yards in returns, rushes and receptions is a player who can claim to be an inspiration
for the shows we do every Friday. And his neighboring rival at White Castle, who was just inducted into
the Minor League Football Hall of Fame can make the same claim. Because Sportsline is not just for the
nationally acclaimed college recruits and future pro football stars, even though Louisiana leads the nation
per capita in producing them.
In fact, a few of you may remember that our first season of high school coverage that came on AFTER the
news, had to share that half hour with previews of LSU and Southern games coming up the next day. There was
even some tailgating coverage, until a group of quarterback club members at St. Charles Catholic in LaPlace
told me one night in no uncertain terms, that we needed to scrap the college coverage on Sportsline and give
the high school athletes their one night to shine. We could include more teams, give more scores from around
the state, and feature crazy fans, cheerleaders, dance teams and bands, knowing that for many this would be
the end of their careers. And after all, the colleges were already getting coverage in the regular newscasts
seven days a week.
2
We had already tried everything else to enhance our coverage of prep football, from establishing a “Game of the
Week” in 1984 and 1985, to adding “The Goal Line 9” poll that ranked teams in all classes against one another
from 1986 to 1988, when we started “Player of the Week.” Yet nothing we did to spotlight players who won that
year like Scott Ray, Gregg Moock, Chad Loup, Michael Toefield and Tommy Walker and their teams at Catholic,
Baker, Independence and U-High seemed to be enough.
And even when we did debut the show on August 31, 1990 we never could have imagined its popularity and what
would follow. Sportsline Summer Camp is wrapping up its 15TH season since it began in 2000. The Sportsline
Player of the Year banquet is going on eight, since former Catholic High and NFL great Warrick Dunn agreed to
present his trophy to our winner from each season since 2007 when Lutcher’s Blaine Gautier took home that first
trophy. Christian Life, Capitol, Franklinton, Dutchtown, East Feliciana and Livonia have all shared in celebrating
with their own winners since Gautier’s great season.
Former Brusly coach Brady Perry appeared on the show over the years with one of our favorite shameless
sideline plugs. “Channel 9’s the best,” Perry shouted into the camera lens that was tracking his every move
when guys like Norman Lejeune and Randall “Blue” Gay were making highlights that would land them in LSU’s
secondary and the NFL. But before that Perry coached Trafton Academy in the 80’s, which was the forerunner
to The Dunham School and featured Todd Kinchen (another LSU star who made the NFL), John Howard a
running back who played for USL (the forerunner to UL-Lafayette) and quarterback Stacy Dennis, who went on
to Southern Miss. They too were inspirations for what we do today.
“It was a great idea,” Perry remembers. “Whoever thought of it should get a raise. The coaches, and players
and parents made sure they were by a TV to watch the show,” which seems a little funny, now that we have an
app that delivers the show to your cell phone or other mobile device! But Perry still remembers guys like Chris
Butler (who played at SMU) and Terrance Gay always talked about Sportsline and the highlights they gave us.
Yes that tape I keep as a reminder is marked “Eight games and five minutes,” which is the most time and most
extensive coverage WAFB (and most stations around the country) had ever allotted for high school football
coverage through the end of the 1989 season. I’m glad it’s be a quarter century since we’ve had to be limited like
that, and I thank the athletes, coaches and fans of the teams we covered from 1984 to 1989 for the inspiration
to do more.

My 14th Year
BY: JACQUES DOUCET, WAFB SPORTS ANCHOR
It’s hard to believe I’ve been at WAFB-TV this long. Time goes by fast, when you’re having a blast. Sportsline
Friday Nite has been a tremendously rewarding and exciting experience for me. In the beginning the mistakes
were many and the lightning fast speed of the show left me staggered. Learning roughly 70 schools, mascots
and coaches was challenging enough.
And although Friday nights in the fall are still a wild and crazy race, they now come with comfort. When an entire
block of games get moved up during a commercial break, I don’t freak out as badly as I used to. That’s how we
roll.
You, the viewers, have always expressed your great appreciation for the show. Despite the fact we cover a
powerhouse college football program in LSU, one of the best franchises in the NFL with the Saints and our
beloved Southern Jaguars, Sportsline Friday Nite garners the most viewer feedback. “You’re that guy from the
high school football show.” Why, yes I am!
Sports Director Steve Schneider pours countless hours of energy and effort into this show throughout the year.
The organization of team rosters, the logistics of photographers and vehicles, the show prep is all a monstrous
undertaking. But he and our crew always seem to deliver.
I often call Steve, the Steve Sabol of Louisiana high school football. Sabol really took the NFL to another level
with his remarkable coverage of the league. Our Steve has done the same thing, taking a sport that really
received minimal, to no television coverage 25 years ago and truly making it important.
Well, it’s now time for 2014. We hope you enjoy the journey with us!

Twitter Runs The World...
Including Prep Football
BY: JACQUES DOUCET, WAFB SPORTS ANCHOR
The internet, as most of us have known it, has been up and running for at least 15-20 years. Yet each year,
it’s becomes more apparent and amazing how much it’s changed athletics. Twitter in particular has become an
enormous part of high school football and the college football powerhouses that recruit it’s blue chip stars.
Search your high school favorite player and you’ll likely find him on Twitter. That player will likely share his
thoughts on the big game Friday, which colleges are interested in him, the universities he’s looking at in return
and the fellow prep starts he’s hopeful will join him at that college. Just last year, John Curtis star wide receiver
and now LSU freshman Malachi Dupre tweeted pictures of Tigers’ head coach Les Miles and Alabama head
coach Nick Saban visiting his home in the same day. This is the type of instant, pertinent information that was
basically nonexistent, in say 1995.
“The player is media now,” says Derek Ponamsky of Bayou Bengals Insider,
“They take to social media and immediately talk to the fans, unfiltered.
Now, instead of calling players and coaches, you follow their feed for
information. And every mood swing they have creates ripples through the
entire recruiting pool.”
Mike Scarborough of Tigerbait.com believes Twitter positivity or negativity
often lies with the user.
“I believe there are some positives, but i see many more negatives for
prospects”, says Scarbrough While a Leonard Fournette always maintained
the highest level of decorum on his twitter feed, many other prospects
post highly inappropriate things, much of it including foul language”.
And lacking manners online, can certainly prove to be costly.
“There have been cases recently where coaches have eliminated borderline
high school players from scholarship consideration due to what they’ve
seen posted on Facebook and Twitter,” adds Scarborough, “Coaches look
at those feeds and it’s a big consideration in character evaluation. Those
prospects who understand the mediums pitfalls can certainly use it as a
positive tool to communicate. For high level prospects they are already
creating a brand that will give them a big start if they end up being a NFL
player.”
For us at WAFB-TV, Twitter has become a huge tool to share information before Sportsline Friday Nite hits at
10:25 pm. While nothing beats the presentation of our show and the highlights, it’s fun to see pictures of your
favorite team and fans that are tweeted between 7 - 10 pm Friday evenings. While it does have a dark side, when
used in a positive and wholesome way, Twitter is truly an amazing tool that really has enhanced high school
football.

BREC Turf Talk
BY: JACQUES DOUCET, WAFB SPORTS ANCHOR
Schools like Parkview Baptist, Denham Springs and Live Oak have all installed artificial turf in recent years for
their home stadiums. The Louisiana Leadership Institute has also become a popular destination for high school
football games and they too have turf. However BREC facilities like Olympia Stadium and Memorial Stadium
aren’t planning on installing it anytime soon.
BREC says their football fields, made of the natural Bermuda grass “Celebration” (same kind used in LSU’s Tiger
Stadium) drain tremendously well. Memorial Stadium’s grass is taking a little longer to bounce back, because of
non-football related activities during the offseason. BREC is still looking forward to another great year of games
at both locations. However Mark Palmer, Sports Manager at Special Facilities for BREC, says because some
inner city schools have closed, there will be less games played at Olympia and Memorial this season. Several
schools are also looking to play home games on campus, which haven’t done so in the past.
Artificial turf is still a very pricey proposition, costing anywhere from $800,000 to $1.2 million dollars. There’s
also a misconception that artificial turf doesn’t need to be tended to like real grass. The fact is turf must be
watered and treated often also.
Brossette Finally A Senior
BY: JACQUES DOUCET, WAFB SPORTS ANCHOR
Nic Brossette has been scoring touchdowns and making Sportsline Friday Nite highlights for the University
High Cubs since his 8th grade year. Now the LSU verbal commitment is finally a senior and looking to
finish with a bang.
“This year is going to be our year,” Brossette says, “We just have to work
harder this year because we are the team to beat and we have to be hungry
enough to make it back to the dome. Me and the team cannot wait!”
During his junior campaign, Brossette romped his way for 2,188 yards
rushing and 37 touchdowns. Those huge numbers coming despite the
fact the Cubs had many of their games well in hand early and yanked
starters long before the final gun. The dynamic play-maker has
already received and accepted an invitation to The 2015 Under Armour
All-American game, while hoping to lead the Cubs to a state championship.
Last year Uhigh reached the Division II select title game, before losing
to John Curtis 32-0. Despite the lopsided defeat, Brossette still rushed
for 120 yards on 27 attempts. It was the Cubs only setback, during a
tremendous 14-1 campaign.

Learning From The Best
BY: CHRIS HAGAN, WAFB SPORTS REPORTER
Joining the WAFB 9 Sports Team’s been even more of a blessing than I could imagine. Not only am I covering
many of the teams and schools I grew up around, but I’m doing so with two of the best colleagues, friends and
mentors around.
I asked a few coaches in the Baton Rouge area about Friday night’s premier television duo of Steve Schneider
and Jacques Doucet, and their responses are probably what you’d expect.
“They’ve been tremendous,” said Guy Blanchard of Port Allen High School. “They’ve got some different
experiences and different styles. I think it works almost like a good cop bad cop thing.”
“I think they’ve done a fantastic job,” Parkview Baptist School’s Jay Mayet said.
“It’s great memories for the kids.,” stated Redemptorist head coach Terence Williams.
But it’s more than for the kids. Sportsline Friday Nite is for the community.
“I know we as coaches are always trying to run back to the field house to turn on Sportsline Friday Nite to see
you guys,” said Williams. “We definitely appreciate it.”
“Their coverage of all the games is something that non-hardcore sports fans will watch on Friday night just to
get a glimpse of an old school,” said Mayet.
And as we enter the 25th season of Sportsline Friday Nite, it wouldn’t be right not to give a special tip of the hat
to Steve and the vision he had with the show with the show since its conception in 1990. It makes Friday nights
in Baton Rouge one of a kind.
“I’ve worked in other areas,” said Williams. “The level of coverage, the expertise, the expertise with the video,
the interviews and the story you guys put together are unmatched in the state area.”
The effort not only to maintain its prominence, but also grow the product for the betterment of the area, is
remarkable on its own.
“I think they’re very sincere with kids and their work,” said Blanchard. “They want to bring coverage to people’s
living rooms, and they’ve done that in a way no one ever did it before.”
Simply put, it’s the perfect show for the game we all love.
“We’re blessed with very talented kids and coaches and giving them good exposure is great,” said Kentwood’s
Jonathan Foster, who grew up playing football and watching Sportsline Friday Nite in the 1990s. “In South
Louisiana, we love our football.”

Beyond The Game
BY: CHRIS HAGAN, WAFB SPORTS REPORTER
During the last few months alone, I’ve worked with and around more football coaches than ever before. And from
1A to 5A, select to non-select and district to district around the Baton Rouge area, I’ve been floored with what
many of these football coaches mean to their students and school both on and off the field.
Most of you may know them better than I do. Each is a legend in their own right, whether they’ve been in the area
for years and years, or just taken over a program. What they inspire in young athletes is incredible.
I think it goes underestimated what it means to take a student, team or entire community and maximize confidence
and performance. As a coach, you want to see your team buy into your program as a player. But what you can’t
always see on Friday nights is that these coaches buy into their players as people. It takes someone special to
go beyond the game and into the lives of players to bring out the best in every aspect of life.
And of course, this includes more than football coaches. I’m blessed to have worked with and befriended some
of the best around in every sport. A close friend of mine enters his first year as a high school head coach in
Louisiana as I write this, and apart from working long days, driving long hours in between cities to his new
destination, and spending time with his team, his “free” time goes to them as well. As a fan of sports, life and
people, that’s what you love to see. He, like many coaches, doesn’t do it for any personal glory. He doesn’t do
it for any extra money. These coaches work day and night for their players. They do it so these kids can have a
unique experience that will always be theirs.
Every high school player on the planet could probably tell you their own experience and relive those memories
on a second’s notice in their own head. And that wouldn’t be possible without a great coach, leader and person
guiding them. Thank you, coaches.
Giving Sportsline
A Little More Soul
BY: CHRIS BLADES, WAFB MARKETING DIRECTOR
The sounds of Friday nights in the fall play out in perfect harmony: the percussion of crashing helmets and
shoulder pads, the vocals of the crowd echoing into the night and the melody that ties it all together, the
marching band. At Baker High School, the man leading this symphonic march is band director Kedric Taylor.
In his office, Taylor sits behind an old wooden desk piled high with sheet music and instruments meticulously
placed around the room so that their silent keys will inspire his next great musical score. His creative juices
flow through his fingers on to the paper of his latest arrangement like the mighty Mississippi through the bayou
state. The title of this arrangement reads, “WAFB Sportsline Theme.” It was an idea that popped in my head last
September as I stood on the sidelines of a Baker High football game. Taylor’s one hundred member Symphony
of Soul Marching Band was electrifying the crowd with their dynamic sounds and disciplined moves. I thought,
“How great would it be to have a marching band perform the iconic Sportsline Friday Nite theme?”
Fast forward to May. I, Sports Director Steve Schneider, Taylor and his Symphony of Soul stand back on that
same grass where the idea was born.
8
“This was a great experience for me,” Taylor said. “I
listened to the song a number of times. I figured out
what part each instrument should play, then wrote
out each part for every instrument. It took me about
two days to arrange the song and it took the students
about two weeks to learn it.”
With our cameras perfectly placed to capture every
angle, the Symphony of Soul stands at attention.
The setting sun glints off the worn brass of their
instruments and the drumline poses in perfect
formation with their sticks held high above their
snares. Finally, with a quick sharp sound from his
whistle, the Drum Major signals the whole production
into action.
As the sounds played out, it became very clear that
Kedric Taylor and his Symphony of Soul had created
something special.
“The most exciting thing about this experience was
the fact that the students really enjoyed themselves
and loved playing the song,” Taylor said. “The song
has really grown on me and the kids, so we are going
to play it all through the season.”
As special as this was for the kids, this project has
just as much meaning for us at WAFB Channel 9. It’s
the twenty fifth season of Sportsline Friday Nite, and
to commemorate the Silver Anniversary we wanted
to give the theme song the soul to reflect its history.
Thanks to Taylor and the Symphony of Soul Marching
Band, we did just that.
So, if you’re lucky enough to attend a Baker High
School football game this year, be sure to pay close
attention as the band belts out their live rendition
of the Sportsline theme. You can also hear it every
Friday night at 10:25pm when we kick off the show
that provides the most comprehensive coverage of
high school football in South Louisiana. Friday night
football is here, can you hear it?

Concussion
BY: ELIZABETH VOWELL, WAFB HEALTHLINE REPORTER
Concussion. The word rings like some sort of sinister onomatopoeia- pow, bang, crack. It conjures images of
heads slamming, necks snapping and eyes rolling back. It has become the monster that lurks under the bed of
sports, threatening to cut short an athlete’s career and dull his or her quality of life.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describes concussions on their website as a traumatic brain
injury, “caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works.”
While concussions are usually not life threatening, the injury has taken center stage in the sports world as
organizations from the pros to youth leagues begin to recognize its potential damaging effects.
“I think it is without a doubt a serious injury,” said Peak Performance physical therapist Steven Wilson. “There’s
so much about concussions that we don’t know.”
Symptoms of concussion include memory loss, difficulty concentrating, nausea or vomiting, blurred vision, and
changes in emotion or sleep patterns. The CDC explains that some symptoms may appear immediately after the
injury occurs, while others may develop later. Contrary to popular belief, the CDC says that most concussions
do not include loss of consciousness and not every concussion occurs on the playing field. The severity of
concussions can also vary. The CDC says that in rare cases, a concussion can lead to a blood clot that requires
immediate medical attention.
Diagnosis of concussions can be tricky. Wilson says that it is best when a medical professional, such as an
athletic trainer, is on hand to actually witness the impact. However, since that is not always the case, Wilson
says it’s important to look for key warning signs- headache, confusion, nausea and balance problems. The
physical therapist advises that an athlete who shows any hint of a concussion should be seen by a doctor for
further evaluation.
“You can’t be too cautious with a concussion,” said Wilson.
Repeat concussions can lead to permanent brain damage and long term problems. One of the most concerning
of those is a disease called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). According to the CTE Center out of Boston
University, the disease is triggered by repetitive brain trauma and causes brain degeneration. It is connected to
memory loss, impaired judgment and impulse control, aggression, depression and even progressive dementia.
The Center also explains that the disease can develop decades after an athlete stops playing. CTE can only
be definitively diagnosed after death through an autopsy, and has been found in several professional athletes
including former football player Junior Seau who committed suicide last year. Investigators suspect that Seau’s
CTE played a role in his death.
“Our bodies are really not made to [receive repeated hits],” said Wilson.
10
While the fear of serious brain damage may have caused many to hesitate to play sports, or to let their children
play, there is a silver lining. An awareness of concussions is spreading. The National Institute of Health
announced several studies partly funded by the National Football League, looking into concussions and their
long-term effects. Last football season, the National Collegiate Athlete Association adjusted college football
tackling rules and penalties in an attempt to keep players from causing and receiving direct hits to the head.
Even local Baton Rouge youth football leagues are changing how they play the game, teaching kids different
ways of tackling to keep their head out of the impact. In baseball, pitcher Alex Torres became the first Major
League Baseball pitcher to wear a specially designed protective helmet on the mound.
There is also new technology to help better diagnose concussions and better indicate when an athlete is
completely healed and ready to return to play. The CDC founded Heads Up, a series of initiatives to help educate
kids, parents, coaches and medical professionals about brain injuries, their treatment and diagnosis.
Peak Performance uses a program offered through ImPACT, Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and
Cognitive Testing. The ImPACT test is an online assessment. It measures everything from memory to vision to
reaction time. Wilson says ideally, athletes will take the ImPACT assessment when they are healthy so that there
is a baseline level. Then, if an athlete is diagnosed with a concussion, the test can be given again. The baseline
results are then compared to the post injury results. When the results match back up, trainers have a better idea
of when an athlete has completely recovered.
“That prevents that kid from slipping through the cracks and returning to the field too early and us having a
serious neurological issue on our hands or even worse, death,” said Wilson. “That’s our goal.”
Wilson says athletes will always be at risk for concussions, especially as they get bigger and faster. He says it’s
vital for parents, coaches and athletes to research concussion, its effects and the best way to identify the injury.
Most importantly, Wilson says that parents should never hesitate to get their child checked out by a physician
and communicate any concerns to coaches.

OUTLOOK
We lost our 2 year starter at QB in DJ Latino and we must replace
him. Depth on our offensive line as well as our WB’s position must be
developed. Defensively we should be strong if we replace our 2 graduating
LB’ers. We should be solid in our defensive line and secondary. Our
kicker and punters return from last year. Presently DC Mattingly and
Javon Yarbrough are competing for the QB spot. Falcon Mire (All District
last year) moves from tackle to center and along with Lee Landry and
Hunter Daigle gives us some experience on the offensive line. Patrick
Butler and Jacquel Wade started at WB as well as James Martin at RB.
Defensively, Delmond Landry made All State last year at defensive line
and should anchor a good defensive front. Jacob Caballero moves from
defensive end to linebacker. All District LB’er Patrick Butler should have
a great year. James Martin made All District as a punter for the 2nd time
last year and is being pushed hard for the starting spot by Nick Bellina.
We hope to have another good year if we can stay away from injuries.

The Mustang Program had a
rough season in 2013. A small
senior class combined with
injuries equaled lots of young
players gaining experience. That
experience is reason to be excited
about the 2014 season. With
many returning starters on the
offense and a few holes to fill
on the defense the Mustangs are
looking for redemption.

The greatest challenge is depth. With only 30 players finishing the spring, depth is still an issue at Baker High.
Also, the district’s schedule is very tough. Nonetheless, I have seen big improvements in our players including
weight room participation. The big goal – getting to play a playoff game at Baker High School this year.

OUTLOOK
Our team outlook for this season is encouraging. We have kids that have
been in the system for 2 years now. Our once young kids are now Jr.’s
and Sr.’s. We have 12 starters returning this year and are bigger, faster
and stronger than 2 years ago. We will have depth in our offensive and
defensive line positions, being our largest group on the team with 15
lineman. Our numbers are stable at 45, up from the 19 players I had
when I first got the job here. I think the biggest thing is that our players
have been brought in to the system and a program has been put in place.
We can see the maturity in all of our players by their commitment to
workouts, attention to details and their enthusiasm about the upcoming
season. This group of kids are determined to turn the Bengals back to
its winning ways as a football program. Our challenges will be to stay
healthy during the season, develop chemistry on defense and remain
focused and disciplined as a team in 2014.

With a new coach and a new

we must improve our strength

system and continue to work hard
it could be a rewarding year at

Our biggest challenge is the same
as last year. We have one of the
toughest schedules in the state.
Last year we survived and it made
us a better playoff team. Hopefully
with that experience it will make
us even more prepared for the
playoffs in 2014. We will have to
replace another Sr. QB and we will
have to fill some big shoes as far
as leadership is concerned. We
graduated a class that took pride
in their roles as leaders. This
spring we have taken steps to fill
those shoes with another strong
Sr. Class. The work ethic and
dedication has been tremendous
thus far. if we continue the pace
that we have established this
spring we are most certain to
have another successful season.

OUTLOOK
The Bears are coming off back to back District Championship seasons.
We are hard at work to try to win another District Title and make a great
run in the Play-Offs. We welcome new Offensive Coordinator Gabriel
Fertitta to our staff. Once again the Defense will be in the capable hands
of Defensive Coordinator Anthony Camp. Back for his 2nd season at
Catholic High is Special Teams Coordinator Eric Held.
Offensive lineman, Aaron Wiltz leads the offensive front. Wiltz is a
returning 1st Team All-District performer. Lawrence Hamilton is also
a veteran Offensive Tackle who started last season as a sophomore.
Running Back Clyde Edwards-Helaire made many big plays last season
as a freshman!
The CHS defense is led by veteran Linebacker Cade Melancon. Another
leader will be Middle Linebacker Uriah Alexander. Alexander started some
games at Fullback a year ago. In the secondary, Cornerback Connor
Bowen, who had 2 interceptions for touchdowns, leads the secondary.
The Bears feature one of the top
kickers in the state. Senior Jack
Gonsoulin is a three year starter
and is the finest Place Kicker
Catholic High has had during
my tenure at the school. He will
probably handle the punting
duties as well.

line returning as well as a 2,000
yard plus passer and a 1,000
yard plus rusher returning.
Defense will be young again,
but will have an experienced
linebacker and a well seasoned
defensive line.

2014 looks to be exciting yet a challenge for the Crusaders. After losing key players to graduation as well as

developed for future season while being led by some amazing returning vets with great character to help leave
a legacy. In 2014 the Crusaders look to continue building on the process of fundamental play and teaching each

Changing coaches presents the usual challenges, finding the best fit for

The accomplishments of last
years team were truly amazing
considering the number of
seniors that we lost. They were
able to win 10 football games thru
hard work, attention to detail, and
team chemistry. If this team will
remember the lessons that last
years team taught us and build on
that I believe we can have a good
year. We graduated some very
good seniors such as Torrance
Mosley and Corey McBride who
signed with T.C.U. along with
Darrell Hardnett, Tyler Hughes,
Trey Gallman, Trey Talley, Brennan
Newman (Millsap’s), and Brady
Bergeron our kicker and punter
who will be greatly missed along
with all of our seniors. We will
need some players to grow up and
fill those hole’s that were created
by graduation. We will be looking
for big contributions from Fitell

The 2014 brings a great deal of
excitement, but also presents
our team with some tremendous
challenges. This year’s team
faces a very competitive schedule
filled with traditional playoff
powerhouses, but we feel with 7
home games our fans will provide
us with a competitive edge against
those tough opponents.

Offensively, our success will be
10/31Assumption
determined on how quickly our

players can adapt and execute our
new system. We will rely heavily upon our veteran players to assist and
speed up the learning curve for the rest of the team. We also face the
challenge of developing depth along the offensive line. The keys for us
offensively are tremendous execution, minimize mistakes, and control
the line of scrimmage and the clock.
Defensively, our group should be strong again as we return experienced
players at multiple positions. While our front may be a little undersized,
we will make up for it with speed and aggressiveness. Although we return
some experienced players, we must develop new players and depth to
be strong all season. Our vicious nature must carry our team to success
throughout the season.

OUTLOOK
District 7-3A is the toughest district in the state; every week presents
a new challenge. Losing 15 seniors to graduation will be a challenge,
it will important that we gain as much experience as possible early on
and create depth. Several underclassmen return this year after gaining
valuable experience last year which will certainly help. We need to quickly
mature, stay healthy and improve each week will ultimately determine the
outcome of this season.

With a hefty group of returning
players the Tigers look to improve
on last season. Hakeem McClain
should replace three year starter
at Tailback and lead the Tiger
offense. Free Safety Javaris Harris
will anchor a much improved
Tiger defense. If the Tigers can
stay healthy in 2014 they should
return to the playoff picture in 3A.

The outlook for the 2014 Roos is
bright, the Roos will be breaking in

a learning curve. The offensive line
will have to replace three starters,
so time will be needed for the unit
to gel. The talented offense will
be led by Shyheim Carter who
will used in multiple positions.
The defense will not be very big
but will be led by ends Kevante
Vennible and Wayne Brown. LB
Darriyn McKnight should be back
healthy after an ankle injury. LB

OUTLOOK
SCHEDULE
Expectations are high at McKinley
9/5Scotlandville
this year. Coach Signater expects
9/12Capitol
this to be his best team since
9/19Opelousas
he’s been at McKinley and his
9/26Central
best chance to reach the Super
Dome.
This team has great
10/3Landry-Walker
overall speed on both sides of
10/10 East Ascension*
the ball. The offense features QB
10/17 St. Amant*
Travion Alexander who is a dual
threat with his elusive speed as a
10/24Catholic*
runner and improved accuracy as
10/31Dutchtown*
a passer. Up front the Panthers
11/7Woodlawn*
will have an experienced offensive
line which has 4 seniors who have
a combined 40 starts. Keeyon Smart, who has offers from 11 schools
including Mississippi State, will anchor the line. Like last year with
Tyrone Scott, the Panthers will have a Senior RB (Larry Moore) who by
seasons end will prove to be one of the best in the metro area. Defensive
line has a strong rotation and is led by Daniel James who himself has
more than 10 scholarships offers; seven of which are from Ivy League
schools. The Line backing Corps is Senior laden and led by Kirkland
Louis Jr. who boasts multiple scholarship offers around the south. The
Secondary features Jaylon Johnson who is an athletic 2-way performer.
This year the Panthers will have 22 seniors and momentum after last
year’s first District 5-5A win and playoff appearance.

Northeast High returns 10

not be a problem for the 2014

Finding quality back-ups will be
a priority for the coaching staff

will be counted on to lift the

A young and inexperienced
football team in 2013, the
2014 team returns 11 starters
on offense and 7 on defense.
The Pelicans have a young,
but potentially very powerful
back field and possibly 4 Sr’s on
the offensive line. On defense
the Pelicans return some very
solid starters and should be
able to continue to play their
aggressive
pressure
style
defense. The Pelicans could be
poised to make a run back to the
playoffs, and possibly make some
noise once they get there.

OUTLOOK
The 2014 team will be challenged with the task of improving on last year’s
record. Our season started out slow, but we continually improved as
district and the playoffs approached. This was solely due to our belief in
each other and our desire to finish every game. Last year’s Southern Lab
Football Team finished the season in the semi-finals – this year we must
do what it takes to make it to the Mercedes Benz Superdome and win the
State Championship. In order to accomplish our goals, we must play
consistently throughout the season and play every game to dominate.
We have 19 out of 22 starters returning this year with a deeper hunger
and an improved will to win. This experience, coupled with the absence
of injury, should make for an exciting 2014 football season.

OUTLOOK
Year 1 is over for Coach Brown and the Hawks and now the goal is not only to be competitive but to be successful,
“NOW”. The Hawks look forward to the upcoming season with renewed sense of optimism within the program
centered on the motto, “Small Town, Big Expectations!!!” The players and coaching staff have a burning desire
to build a successful football program that the St. Helena Parish Community will once again be proud of.
When the Hawks take the field this fall, the players at St. Helena will be bigger, faster, and stronger, and also
play a more discipline and physical style of football. After a 2-9 finish and a 1st round playoff appearance in
2013, the players and coaches made a commitment to getting better and they have been working extremely hard
to make sure they do not duplicate the season they experienced last season. St. Helena will also have plenty of
experience on the field when this fall comes around.
The Hawks will be returning 12 seniors. Those seniors will be called upon to provide great leadership on and
off the field. At St. Helena the senior players are asked to take charge and be examples to the rest of the team.
As a program St. Helena is trying to change the culture and climate of our school and program and it starts with
our senior leaders. Some of the senior leaders and captains are: Dussell Cooper, LaJarious Floyd, Trent Tanner,
Darrell Bowman, Sidney Banks, and LaTrone Williams. Although the seniors will lead, those seniors will be well
complemented by a group of talented underclassmen. With the amount of talented underclassmen the Hawks
have, look for St. Helena to be strong for a while.
“Small Town, Big Expectations,” is not just a motto; it’s the attitude, identity, and heartbeat of the program. That
attitude will be shown this fall when the Hawks take the field with renewed toughness, discipline, commitment,
confidence, and passion. St. Helena looks to make an impact in 2A football this fall.

St. Michael finished the 2013 season with a record of 4-7 and
suffered an opening round playoff loss to St. Thomas More. Last year’s
challenging season allowed the Warriors to develop several new starters
in preparation for the 2014 season. If they can stay healthy and focused,
the St. Michael Warriors should look forward to a successful season and
an opportunity to make a run in the playoffs.

The biggest challenge for the Tigers in 2014 will be replacing the entire

OUTLOOK
This season, a small but talented senior class will lead our team which is coming off a state championship game
appearance. This senior class has won three consecutive district championships, and will have to have another
outstanding season to finish with four straight. The team seems to have a great chemistry, and I believe that
they have the attitude that it takes to become a championship team. The big question for this team is are they
satisfied with the achievements of previous teams, or are they willing to do what it takes to succeed even further.
Offensively, we return only 4 starters. We have a returning QB in Manny Miles and a returning RB in Nick
Brossette. There are two seniors with a great deal of experience on the offensive lines, but the rest of the unit is
untested. At wide receiver, we will have to replace two very productive receivers in D’Vante Dotson and Brandt
Broussard. Tre Jackson looks to be the leader of the group after having played more defense in his career to
this point. Jake Wharton after missing last year due to injury looks to provide a physical presence and some
versatility to the wide receiving corps.
Our defense will also have to replace a number of key starters lost to graduation. As a whole, we have a great
deal of experience in the back half, but up front is where we will be less experienced. The players looking to start
for the first time are capable, they just need to gain experience to help
this unit continue its effective play. Dylan Moses broke the school record
for tackles as a freshman, and Laryon James also racked up over 100
tackles. This duo should be primed for a great year after being first time
starters last year. In the secondary, Jalon Baker, Malik Antoine, and Tre
Jackson have a good deal of experience and will have to be the leaders
back there. Sam Wharton is the lone returning starter on the defensive
line, and he will have to improve this season to make up for the losses
from graduation.
Our non-district schedule is very difficult with games versus Teurlings
Catholic, Southern Lab, Denham Springs, and Lagrange. All of these
teams made the playoffs last season and have a great deal of talent
returning. The success of the 2013 team has certainly made the target
on the back of this year’s team even larger. Our district has a number
of successful programs and coaches in it, and we expect the district
competition to be outstanding once again. As always, our division in the
playoff brackets will be one of the most difficult in the state.

The biggest challenge for this
year’s squad will be replacing 29
seniors from last year’s team.
Having said that, we will like our
young kids. The team is working
hard in the weight room and on
the field this offseason. The team
will have many key positions to fill
before the season begins, but with
the hard work this young team has
shown this summer it should be
an exciting 2014 football season.

OUTLOOK
Look to have continued growth in discipline, commitment, and the ability to compete for 48 minutes. If we can
grow these aspects of our program in year 2 then we will have a chance for great success every day and every
game. We definitely have goals to work towards that are driving our program to be better than ever before. We
have a group of men committed to the process that has a lot of fun and passion for competing which excites us
all around our school and football program.

The Broncos look to expand on
the quarterfinal run that they
enjoyed a season ago. With a new
head coach and several new staff
members, it will be important to
make sure the new systems are
picked up on quickly. Spring
practice went very well and the
expectations are high. 12 starters
return (6 offense and 6 defense)
so there is some experience
coming back to lead the team.
