Various: Every Song Has Its End: Sonic Dispatches from Traditional Mali (Hidden Musics 2)
GBLP 29 / 4030433602911 / label: Glitterbeat / format: 2-LP+DVD / Mali – Traditional
Bamako-based producer/educator Paul Chandler has been documenting the sonic and cultural complexities
of Malian traditional music for more than a decade and “Every Song Has Its End” is an out-of-time, visceral
collection of sounds from Chandler’s unparalleled archive. Echoes of these sounds can of course be heard in the urbanized
Malian music that has been embraced throughout the world, but the songs, ritual soundscapes and accompanying images found
here are undoubtedly more raw, foundational and filled with surprise than the Malian music we are accustomed to.
Accompanied by a recording engineer and a video-maker, Chandler has ventured to off-the-grid villages and crossroad towns all
across the vast Malian landscape. Through a network of long-nurtured local contacts this small team has sought out practicing
traditional musicians and their under-documented and often endangered musics. Immersive and exhilarating, these field
recordings and videos give us a privileged glimpse into the intricacies of the Malian musical experience. Without doubt, this is
Malian music at its finest. Listen to ‘Le Souvenir’ by Group Ekanzam.
Joana Amendoeira: Muito Depois
CNMCD 533 / 5606265008215 / label: CNM / format: CD / Portugal – Fado
Joana Amendoeira is considered one of the most important singers of the "New Generation". In her singing,
th
fado wins new glow, new attitude, without deviating from tradition. In 2015 she celebrated her 20
anniversary of her career, since she started at a very young age. Many albums and concerts around the
world followed, accumulating in the latest album Muito Depois. Innovation is clearly audible in the new
compositions by her or her brother Pedro Amendoeira. With a voice that incorporates subtlety and power at
the same time, this is yet another leap in her fado career. Listen to the title song.
Thomas Mapfumo & the Blacks Unlimited: Chimurenga ‘98
CHIMU 199801 / 0714288029829 / label: AWP / format: CD / Zimbabwe – Chimurenga
This album from 1998 is now available again through Xango Music. Chris Nickson on Allmusic: “You have to
hand it to Thomas Mapfumo -- the man is never afraid to keep pushing at the boundaries of his music. On
this disc, he not only plays his trademark mbira-based chimurgena music, but also casts his net as far as
Mali with "Ndiyani Waparadza Musha," a mix that works very smoothly, mixing two African cultures, while
"Set the People Free" is really African rock with an English language rap in the middle -- and very good it is.
Of course, his basic style forms the heartbeat on tracks like "Tinofara" and "Wandiita Muroyi," with the three
mbiras as his rhythm section, the core of his sound. One of the fullest and most diverse albums
of Mapfumo's career.” Listen to a song here.
Showarma i els Falafels: Elements
KM 116 / 8429085271051 / label: Kasba / format: CD / Spain – Mestizo
Showarma i els Falafels is the band of former drummer of Desminguet Marti Vilardebo, who now composes,
sings and plays the guitar in his new band. Also the other musicians have experiences in other Spanish mestizo
bands, and this experience accumulates to a contagious blend of twist, son, reggae, funk, rumba, kirtan and
rock. Summer is coming! Listen to ‘No Tenim Por’.
Ziya Tabassian – Hossein Omouni – Kiya Tabassian: Fire of Love – Ates-I Ask
KA 65 / 8696135220653 / label: Kalan / format: CD / Iran – Classical Persian
Hosseim Omouni (ney, vocals), Kiya Tabassian (setar) and Ziya Tabassian (tombak, daf) perform classical
Persian music. They play the Masnavi-composition by Rumi in different ways, as well as ghazals by Hafez
and Attar. Persian music is like an extensive language. However, you don’t need to speak the language to
understand the music. The musicians reflect the world of his own thoughts, building a circle of thoughts.
That’s how Persian music becomes more modular than linear. In other words, let the musicians be your
guide in their reflections of the inner self. Listen to a track here.

Simdi Ensemble: Eternal Love
KA 696 / 8691834011373 / label: Kalan / format: CD / Turkey – Sufi
Eternal Love is the debut album of the Turkish Şimdi Ensemble. They perform sufi music of anonymous
origin as well as own compositions. Şimdi is dedicated to performing mystic music with a new understanding
while following the centuries old tradition in Anatolia. Founded by singer and composer Bora Uymaz it
features ney player Yavuz Akalın, kemençe player Mehmet Yalgın from Izmir, Hasan Kiriş, the young and
talented tanbur player from Osmaniye (near Adana), Volkan Ergen, percussionist and Sirin Pancaroglu on
harp. Guest musician on this album is the well known French tuba and serpent player Michel Godard. Listen
to Éternal Love’.
JB Moundélé: Revelation
BUDA 860288 / 3341348602882 / label: Buda / format: CD / Africa - Jazz
For this new project, saxophone-player JB Moundele — a nickname that was given to him in Kinshasa from
the phrase "moundele ndombi" meaning "Black White" in Lingala — wanted to share his vision of current
African urban music. With his jazz awareness and, this time, a 100% instrumental approach, he was joined
by musicians who had distinguished themselves with Mory Kanté, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Meiway or DJ Arafat.
This did not prevent him from “thinking like a singer”, highlighting its melodic qualities and bringing his sax
playing close to a singing voice. Listen to this track.
Sarah Aroeste: Ora de Despertar
AM 4 / 0700261435558 / label: Aroeste Music / format: CD / US – Ladino/Children
The title, “Ora de Despertar” or “Time to Wake Up” is both a fun title track about waking up in the morning,
but also a deeper "wake-up call" to the outside world that we need to teach our children about Ladino before
it fades away. Songs range from learning about body parts, to animals on a farm, ways to say “hello,"
morning rituals and more. These songs happen to be in Ladino, but hopefully all listeners, young and old,
will enjoy the songs for what they are: fun, catchy and spirited! This is the first children’s album in Ladino
ever, and will play an important role in maintaining a language and a cultural heritage of the
Ladino/Sephardic culture. Check out this video.
Various: Latin American Harps
SA 141279 / 3700089412790 / label: Air Mail Music / format: CD / Latin America
Present day Latin American harps have evolved from the Baroque harps taken there from Spain during the years of conquest an
colonization. The best known is the Paraguayan harp, but the harp of the Ilanos grasslands, the Veracruz jarocho harp and the
Andean harp are equally attractive. All four instruments are heard o fthis CD, presenting a kaleidoscope of Latin American harp
music.
EXPECTED
Expected 29 April:
Damir Imamovic’s Sevdah Takht: Dvojka
GBCD 33 / 4030433603321 / label: Glitterbeat / format: CD / Bosnia-Herzegovina – Sevdah
Damir Imamovic’s Sevdah Takht: Dvojka
GBLP 33 / 4030433603314 / label: Glitterbeat / format: LP / Bosnia-Herzegovina - Sevdah
The Huffington Post recently called Damir Imamovič : “The King of Sevdah.” Sevdah is Bosnia’s gorgeous
and centuries old popular song form. While Damir and his pan-Balkan band Sevdah Takht are certainly the
most important young proponents of sevdah, their approach is fueled by a fearless commitment to push this
passionate music into contemporary, unknown territory. They are more revolutionaries than kings.
Watch this impressive (in both sound and image) video clip of the song ‘Sarajevo’.
Expected 8 April:
Omar Konate: Maya Maya
CLECD 14 / 0711574794829 / label: Clermont Music / format: CD / Mali – Popular
Konaté's Maya Maya comes from a country in turmoil. Shifting between acoustic melancholy ("Wango
Maben") and hard rock ("Hinchi Hinchi"), Konaté and his power trio are 21st-century West African millennials
slammed by geopolitics, shocked by an uncertain future, and stymied by fundamentalism, corruption, and
failed economies. Known to friends simply as "le Maestro," Konaté is a guitar genius. Sought after as
bandleader and performer, Konaté has played from Bamako to Gao and from Europe to New York to Los
Angeles. Drummer Makan Camara is perhaps the best in West Africa. Bassist Cheick Siriman Sissoko is also
a well-known singer. Listen to this track.
Expected 8 April:
Adnan Othman: Bershukor: A Retrospective of Hits by a Malaysian Pop Yeh Yeh Legend
SUBFLP 98 / 0616892330448 / label: Sublime Freq. / format: 2-LP / Malaysia – Popular
The legendary Adnan Othman has long been a driving force in the Malaysian rock scene. As early as the
1960s his groundbreaking songs in the style known as "pop yeh yeh" (rock and roll sung in Malay) were
attracting fans across Malaysia and Singapore. He has since gained many fans around the globe due to a
renewed interest in rock music from Southeast Asia. This impressive collection includes rare photos from the
artist's own collection and a detailed biography co-written by Othman himself. This is a rare and personal
insight into the life of one of Singapore and Malaysia's most beloved pop yeh yeh legends, revealing the
humble, generous, down-to-earth man behind the spotlight.
