Rockerarm Shaft Assembly
Our long term goal is to provide valve train products capable of providing superior performance, reliability and durability in
applications where engine speeds will exceed 10,000+ RPM and provide stability far past that number. When first approaching
this project we found several issues needing attention. As we worked through the design process we incorporated a solution
to each one of the following issues:
Rockerarm Geometry: Proper rockerarm geometry is critical in any engine assembly, especially with engine speeds in
excess of 10,000+ RPM. There is nothing magical or mysterious about the subject, so instead of just a guess we followed
some basic rules and corrected the geometry of our Top Alcohol rockerarm assemblies. We incorporate this basic geometry
theory in everything we design. Manifold boost and cylinder pressure are also a major consideration in this process. We feel
rockerarm geometry to be dynamic, not static.
Oil Transfer and Oil Leaks: We oil our assembly through the fourth cam bearing as with most Chrysler type blocks.
From there, through a series of transfer passages, the oil fills both shafts. Radial transfer passages provide full time oiling to
the intake and exhaust adjusting screws / pushrod cup interface through the adjusting screw. This is commonly referred to as
“Forced Oiling”. Very tight clearances between the rockerarm stands and the shafts help to eliminate the majority of the excess
oil spillage and pressure loss. Threaded plugs are used in each shaft to minimize the possibility of pressure loss out the ends
of the shafts. When changing over from the stock rockerarm assembly to the Manton assembly you can expect an oil pressure
increase of 10 to 15 pounds. Our rockerarm assemblies DO NOT require the use of restrictor jets.
Strength, Stability and Rigidity: By adding the strength and support of a load screw at each rockerarm we have more
than doubled the strength of the assembly. By using heavy duty rockerarm shafts and attaching the shafts to the stands with
the load screws we have again strengthened the assembly. Each of the materials used have been selected for their ability to
do its specific job. The heat treat procedure and preparation for each material also has been carefully selected. Bottom line
is we have produced a finished product that has the ability to maintain valve train control at engine speeds over 10,000 RPM.
Five years of race day testing and hundreds of hours of lab tests have allowed us to offer a suggested valve train combination
that is stable far past 10,900+ RPM and at the same time, the service life of the valve springs, roller lifters and all valve train
components will be extended. The strength and rigidity of each component in combination with each other allows for a finished
product that performs very well, in the most extreme environment. Some say, “a little flex is good”. We Respectfully Disagree.
Our response is, “If a little flex is better than why do F1 and INDY engines not use Pushrods”?
In the past we have referred to our stands as Low and High ratio. This reference is to the exhaust rockerarm ratio. Low being
1.6 to 1 and high being 1.7 to 1. The intake ratio remains the same in either choice. Over the past 5 years the demand for
the Low ratio assemblies has been completely replaced by requests for our High ratio assembly. It stands to reason that if it
becomes necessary to slow down the exhaust side, it is cost effective to accomplish this with a camshaft change instead of a
more costly rocker assembly. For this reason we no longer offer the low ratio rocker assemblies formerly listed in our printed
material.

Intake Rockerarms
Top Alcohol / Pro Mod / “A” Fuel
We have taken an aggressive approach in the design of our Top Alcohol and ProMod intake rockerarms. It has been
designed to be an upgrade replacement for the intake rockerarm being used today in the Top Alcohol, “A” Fuel and Pro
Mod categories.
Changes have been made in several areas to improve the performance of the valve train. This will help correct some
physical geometry issues that have come about through cylinder head changes over many years. Changes in valve lift,
increased spring pressure, installed spring height and changes in the location of the intake rockerarm shaft have made it
necessary to correct the valve side fulcrum length of the rocker body. This change locates the roller bearing closer to the
center of the valve which decreases the possibility of the bearing running off the edge of the contact patch. The fulcrum
length, on the pushrod side of the rockerarm, is also increased to correct the rockerarm ratio. These corrections provide
additional pushrod clearance and applications where a 7/16” diameter pushrod is being used it becomes possible to
increase the pushrod diameter to 1/2”. This improves the stability of the valve train at engine speeds above 8,500 RPM
and as high as 11,000 RPM.

Top Fuel Billet Intake Rockerarms
Fulcrum Length 1.600”
We took on the task of producing a Billet Rockerarm to replace the existing
stainless steel casting. This design will out perform all it’s competition.
To stay in line with the existing valve train format being used by all of
the NHRA and IHRA Top Fuel and Funny Cars, at this time, we have
decided to maintain the design geometry all of us are familiar with.
This is to have a fulcrum length of 1.600”.
The design incorporates an I-Beam design which strengthens and
stiffens the part, minimizing deflection and additional material has
been added around the back side of the oil pressure fed adjusting
screw. This reduces the possibility of the adjusting screw being torn
away from the rocker body.
The roller bearing axle pin has been designed to allow for easy replacement in the field. Adjusting screws are H-13 Tool
Steel and incorporate an oil band for an all pressure fed rocker body. The Manton Billet Intake Rockerarm is produced
from 4340 Chromoly on a four axes milling center. The proven Heat Treat procedure is the same used by Manton
Pushrods. The Manton Billet Rockerarm can be used in Top Alcohol / Pro Mod / Injected Fuel applications as a direct
replacement for Stage V rockerarms of the same ratio designation.

Top Alcohol Billet Intake Rockerarms
Fulcrum Length 1.675”
The Manton Top Alcohol Billet Rockerarm is an I-Beam replacement for our 17-4 Investment Cast Rockerarm and is
primarily designed to be used on a Manton Top Alcohol Rocker Assembly. The primary difference between our Fuel
Rockerarm and our Alcohol Rockerarm is the fulcrum lengths.
Most rockerarms used on Dechelis, Co-Line, AJPE and BAE rocker shaft assemblies have a fulcrum length of 1.600”.
The Manton Top Alcohol Billet Rockerarm has a valve side fulcrum length of 1.675”. This was done to allow the use of
larger diameter pushrods and correct the roller bearing contact point on the valve.
The I-Beam Billet Top Alcohol Rockerarm incorporates all of the same features as the Billet Top Fuel Rockerarm. The
roller bearing axle pin has been designed to allow for easy replacement in the field. Adjusting screws are H-13 Tool Steel
and incorporate an oil band for all pressure fed rocker bodies.

Exhaust Roller Tip Rockerarms
After many requests from engine builders and race teams, our “NEW” Roller
Tip Exhaust Rockerarm has been added to our product line. The standard
features of the Manton “I-Beam Rockerarm” were incorporated into the
design with the prime intention of increasing the strength, stiffness,
stability and reliability required in the Top Alcohol and Pro Mod
categories.
The I-Beam rocker design is not a new idea, in fact it is far
from it. No one can claim to have the Original I-Beam
Rockerarm. If we look back in history we will realize
that the original Chrysler early HEMI rockerarm was
an I-Beam. Many other rockerarms designed as far
back as 1918 were I-Beams. With that said, it is the
preferred design theory when it comes to structural
strength and stiffness. That is true whether we are
designing a building or a rockerarm.
Top Fuel engine assemblies produce cylinder pressures approaching 24,000 PSI. A-Fuel engines are in the range of
13,000 PSI. In this case the exhaust rockerarm must be as strong as possible and at the same time stiff enough to
maintain valve train control.
The Manton Roller Tip, I-Beam Rockerarm provides the highest strength to weight ratio of any design configuration. We
use 4340 steel billet to manufacture all of our billet rockerarms and each rocker body is heat treated to 305,000 P.S.I.
This is not a forged rockerarm, it is a true billet rockerarm providing perfect grain alignment, which improves reliability
and consistency. An oil passage supplies engine oil pressure to the adjusting screw which minimizes the possibility of
pushrod galling. This also limits unwanted and unnecessary oil spillage and oil pressure loss. The roller wheel has been
increased in size to a very large .5710” diameter and the pin to .2756”. The increased pin diameter is necessary to
maximize the strength of the roller which has become increasingly important as cylinder pressures continue to increase.

Spark Plug Tubes
Small diameter spark plug tubes minimize the possibility of rockerarm to tube contact. These tubes are a
direct replacement for your existing tubes. Top and bottom ends are billet aluminum and the tube body is
4130 steel. The steel body will not dent or wear if the rockerarm rubs during operation. The tube diameter
allows for an additional .040 of clearance. (O.D. = 1.180).
“A minor modification must be made to the spark plug boot to allow the boot to enter the tube”.

Rockerarm Shafts
With valve train stability being our main concern we manufacture our shafts to be very stiff. Our choice of material is
.250” wall thickness 4130 Chromoly steel. Each pre-heat treated shaft is prepared in a four axis milling center, then
center less ground undersize, hard chromed oversize and finish ground to size. This leaves a hard chrome surface .008”
deep, providing excellent wear protection in any application, including use in your daily driven street Hemi. Our Fat Head
shafts feature a new type of radial oil transfer passage which provides full time oiling to the pushrod and adjusting screw.
Without this new oiling feature the stock oiling passage is shut off as soon as the rockerarm starts to open the valve. All
of our shafts use a threaded plug to seal each end. This eliminates any chance of an oil leak from worn or poor fitting
O-rings.

Valve Spring Checking & Replacement Tool
(Leanders Bros.)
This valve spring tool comes to us from Ulf and Jörgen Leanders of Alfta Sweden. Being
multiple time Top Alcohol Funny Car European Champions they understand the critical
need to maintain the valve train in their BAE powered race car and found a real need
to check and replace valve springs within the 75 minute rule. This is the device
Jörgen designed to allow the quick and safe removal of springs between rounds.
Four rocker stand attaching nuts on each head, replace the four twelve point
mounting nuts and remain on the car. These nuts are the mounting hardware
for the spring tool. After a run you remove the valve cover and, in a matter of
30 seconds you install the tool assembly. Rotate the engine to allow the valve
to seat, insert the pressure gauge. Add pressure to the spring using the load
screw until the valve just moves. This will show the seat pressure of the spring. If
replacement is required, you simply replace the gauge with the compression tool and
remove the spring. Turn the load bar over and check the second spring on the same
cylinder. Move to the next cylinder and repeat the process. Switch sides and check the
other head. You can check all sixteen valve springs on a Top Alcohol, Pro-Mod or Injected
Fuel engine in less than ten minutes.

Rockerarm “Shaft Springs”
Rockerarm shaft springs have been preferred by most over locating clamps. Springs are trouble free, require no attention
and allow you to service the engine without the worry of leaving a screw untightened. Coiled from music wire they
provide 7.5 pounds of pressure at 1.950” height. This pressure is slightly higher than the common spring. Rockerarm
shaft shims are stamped from 1085 spring steel and heat treated for wear resistance.

Rockerarm “Shaft Clamps”
Rockerarm shaft clamps do a very good job of holding the rockerarm in position during operation. Most HEMI engines
use a spring to statically push the rocker against the rocker stand and the angularity of the pushrod maintains the rocker
in that position. During valve train surge the only alignment provided is from the interference of the pushrod and the
access hole in the cylinder head. The good stability is achieved by using a large diameter pushrod, which limits the
lateral travel of the rocker body on the shaft. By using a shaft clamp the rocker body is held in position even during harsh
valve float.
