ArtGlassScreens 2011 LaurenAdams St.Louis,MO Untitled (Missouri Coverlet Abstraction 1850s to 2010) ThisdesignisbasedonthepatternofawovencoverletthatbelongedtoBetseyCoryTerhune ofNodawayCounty,Missouriinthe1850sandisnowinthecollectionoftheSaintLouisArt M Museum.Thecoverlet’ Th l t’srowsoftightlypacked,flowerͲfilledrectanglescreateagridͲlike f ti htl k d fl fill d t l t id lik patternthatwastypicalofcoverletsandcarpetsfromthistime.Thecoverletwaspasseddown throughtheTerhunefamilyanddonatedtotheMuseumin2003.Ihavefocusedononesmall areaofthecoverletandpaintedanabstractedandaggrandizedinterpretationofthewoven texturesandcolors.Mypaintingwasthentranslatedintoglass.Mydesireforthisworkisto create a contemporary awareness of the textile traditions of Missouri, within the context of the createacontemporaryawarenessofthetextiletraditionsofMissouri,withinthecontextofthe Airport. Sarah Giannobile St. Louis, MO Dream of Flying Thispieceiscomposedofthreeseparatedrawingsthatcanbeviewedasinventedlandscapes andimaginarywebformsfoundinnature. Thedrawingsarelikeexaggeratedandabstract environments. Inmywork,repeatedshapesandsymbolscansometimesappearlikeanaerial vieworamap. Forthispiece,Iwantedtomakemydrawingsappeartobegrowingand multiplyingandweavinginthesurroundingspaces. Ihopetheviewercanenvisionbusystreetsandsmallhiddendwellingsinthesedifferent abstractforms.Colorwillbecreatedbypassersby,whosemovementwillbemadediffusewhen seenthroughthetranslucentwhite. Joan Hall St. Louis, MO The Confluence MyinterestinsystemsandrelationshipsledmetodesignanartworkfortheAirportthatisinfluenced bytheconfluenceoftheMississippiandMissouriRivers,twoofthegreatestriversinNorthAmerica. MyresearchtookmetotheConfluencemultipletimestoobservethespotwherethetworivers combine into one I made rubbings of native plants while I walked the banks of the river combineintoone.ImaderubbingsofnativeplantswhileIwalkedthebanksoftheriver. IalsodiscoveredthatLewisandClarkcollectedover220plantsamplesontheirjourneyuptheMissouri Riverandthatthesesamplesfaroutnumberotherobjectsintheircollection,asplantswhereextremely valuabletonineteenthͲcenturyEuroͲAmericanresearchers.Ifoundthattheseexplorersusedplants, suchastheCompassGoldenRod– whichalwayspointstotheNorth,tonavigateontheplains.Inmy work,IhavedepictedtheCompassGoldenRodasaghostͲlikeshape.Rubbingsofothernativeplants k Ih d i t d th C G ld R d h t lik h R bbi f th ti l t areplacedwithinportalsandnavigationalcharts,whichrefertotheimportanceofcommerceonthe rivers.Theturbulentriversthemselvesarerepresentedthroughthetwocolorsofswirlingbluethat dominateandflowthroughthedesign. Onethingweallhaveincommonisafascinationwiththesky.Cloudsareofuniversalinterestandtheir significanceandmeaningiswideopentointerpretation.Airtravelenablesustoexperienceashiftin perspectiveandviewcloudsatathrillingproximity.Cloudsareneverstatic;theyareinconstantflux. p p gp y ; y Thismakesthemtheperfectmetaphorfortravelandvoyaging.LikehumansinBuckminsterFuller’s view,cloudsareverbsͲͲ signsofongoingactionandtransformation,departureandpassage. Inthecenterpanel,abaldeagleholdsabannerreading:“VIVEREESTVOLARE”– toliveistofly.The twosidepanelsdepictbirdsofpreyatdawnanddusk.Asawhole,thedesignofthepanelsrepresentsa fusionofmyinterestsinstainedglasswindows,traditionaltattooflash,andNorthernRenaissance woodcutsofthe1400s. Toachievethisnarrativequalitywhilestayingwithintheparametersoftheglasstechnique, Ipareddownthecompositiontoasinglefigureandcreatedanimagethatrecallsfilmstillsorcinema, exploitingtheinherentfilmiccharacteristicsofthepiece’sformat– itsmoviescreenͲlikeaspectratio, thetransparencyoftheglass,andthetriptych’sintermittentdivisions.Thedeadpancompositionand thekeyedͲupcolorhues,aswellasthegestureofthefigurefacingawayfromtheviewer,areallmeant toreinforcethismovieͲlikequalityandevokeintheviewerakindofempatheticnarrative.The y, , g y g abundanceofsky,theabsenceofahorizonline,andthegarmentwornbythefigureareallsubtle referencestoflightandtravel. Edna Patterson-Petty East St. Louis, IL A Whimsical View AsamultiͲmediafabricartist,Iuselotsofcolorfulmaterialsinmydesignconcepts.Forthiswork,I createdanabstractdesignusingwatercolorpaperandpaintandapproacheditasadeconstructedart quiltdesign.Iembellishedselectedareasineachpanelwithsmallbitsoffabrictrimasitrelatestothe designandcolor.Theabstractdesignsfloatseparatelyontheglasspanels,incontrasttothewayfabric piecesaresewntogethertoconstructquilts. Mel Watkin Cobden, IL Mimic Thispiece,whichIhavetitled“Mimic,”consistsofthreenearexactcopiesofanItalianCyprustree,each surroundedbyahaloofLunamoths.Eachtreeisfreestandingonaclearsheetofglass—asiftheyhad grownoutofthefloor.Myhopeisthatthepiecewillfeellikeahedgetothosesittingorstanding nearby. ThescaleofthisworkmimicsthescaleoftheItalianCyprustree,whichonlygrows6Ͳ8feetinheight. Whiletheydonotglow,Lunamothsareanalmostfluorescentgreenandareoftenaslargeasthepalm ofyourhand.Ihavegiventhemtheattributesofinsectsthatmimictheshapeandcoloroftheflora aroundthemtoeludepredators.InthisworktheLunamothsaretryingtohidebymimickingtheshape yp yp g g , oftheCyprustrees.InturntheberriesontheCyprustreesmimicthewingmarkingsoftheLunamoths, whichlooklikeeyes.
